Duysters Loterbol 8 Blond

Duysters Loterbol 8 Blond

The Duysters Brewery may well be the smallest commercial brewery in Belgium - annual production of both its beers is only about 650 cases.

Loterbol is a crisp blonde ale that is very tasty and mightily satisfying. It drinks much stronger than its 6.8% alcohol by volume would suggest, and tastes a little spicy, though no spices are used in the brewing. The exotic palate of this beer comes from the unique strain of yeast.

Duysters Brewery flourishes in the shadow of one of the world’s largest breweries, Interbrew, in the nearby town of Leuven. But there is no mistaking this exquisite hand-crafted brew for the mass-product of the nearby beer factory.

‘Loterbol’ is a Flemish word for a fool or prankster, an allusion to the deceptive smoothness and drinkability of this beer.

Selected as one of the fifty best beers in the world by Men's Journal magazine, July 2005.

3.4 Peach blonde ale tasted when the brewery was still Duysters. Unfortunately the sample I had, was an old one: no more head worth mentioning and strong maderisation. The honeyish and spicy basic character was still obvious enough - and in fact it had aged graciously. Now time to re-rate this as a young beer...
3.4 Shared with benny at my home. Clear goldblond colored beer with medium white head and lots of carbonation. Hopped fruited and a bit spicy aroma. Full sparkling palate. Finish is sweet spicy hopped ending a bit dry.
3.3 Het ruikt zoals een tripel en hij smaakt licht bitter. Een mooie donker blonde kleur.
3.9 Pours a large frothy white head that mostly diminishes. Body is hazy yellow with sparkles visible. Aroma contains moerate malts (cookie, grain, caramel), light hops (flowers, citrus fruits), light yeasts (leather, earth) and banana, grape, raisin, apple, cassis, cinnamon and cola. Taste is light acidic, then light acidic and bitter followed by sweet, sweet and light acidic and finally bitter. Body is light to medium with creamy texture and soft carbonation. Crisp, fresh beer with lots of fruits and a dry bitter finish. Refreshing. Good one.
3.6 17/V/14 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ home - BB: V/2016 (2014-504) Little cloudy blond beer, creamy off-white head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: floral, citrus, bit spicy. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: spicy, coriander, some citrus, floral, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: hops, very spicy, coriander, some cloves, orange peel, little sweet. Aftertaste: bitter, roange marmalade, bit sugary, lots of coriander, spicy. Decent Belgian tripel (or whatever).
2.6 Standard Belgian blond beer. Bit more floral and sweet than others. Nothing special.

3.3 From a 33 cl bottle shared at the March 2014 DC RB gathering. Pours a cloudy gold with an off white head. Lemon nose. Flavors of bubblegum and cloves. Light bodied. Soft carbonation. Bitter finish.
4.0 Ajax! Bottle. Poured a cloudy yellow color with a white head. Aroma is a nice sweet malt character, some light lemon notes. funk. Enjoyable. Easy to drink!
3.6 Blonde dorée trouble, effervescence légère à bulles fines, col blanc fin. Malts cara, un rien fruitée, bonne petite amertume herbacée.
2.8 Deep gold, clear, low carbonation, thin white head. Aroma: pilsner malt, an earthy note, leather, light spice, pear. Flavor is similar with definite leather, earthy notes, light fruit.
3.2 Color: golden yellow, full white head. Nose: typical Belgian yeast, hops, grassy, little metallic. Taste is dry, bitter, a lot of yeast, a lot of CO2 bit still balanced. Okey beer.
2.4 Poured from a 330ml bottle, thanks to Mike. Oxidized, pear with skins. Caramel notes. Old and aged poorly.
4.2 33 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from Willems. BBF 05/2015. This brewery is really everything that one could wish from a very small Belgian brewery. Solid, outstanding beer, something to set them apart, good price, excellent quality, standard offerings plus one or two specials, … whereas most breweries of their size put out infected, crummy beers which are dull and unimaginative at best. Bright opaque orange with little fungus looking white head. Smell is overripe oranges, esters, hay, sweet BE yeast, light caramel, mandarins, touch spices, bitter old yeast type stuff,… Taste is sweet caramel, thick BE yeast, plaster, slightly fruity, light bitter spices, touch esters, zest light pepper,… Malty body, med. slightly lively carb. This one is far from unique but it has no flaws, solidly executed, very drinkable,… This is really nice considering just how bad a lot of the beers from breweries of similar production sizes are.
3.3 Blond met heel veel kraag. Ruikt wat moutig maar ook zoetfruitig met wat alcohol. Smaakt vooral gistig, beetje bitter. Wel goed te drinken.
3.3 33cl bottle. Appearance: clear blonde beer, full of carbonation, nice white foam. Nose: little florar, bitter. Taste: dry, grassy, barnyard.
3.1 Big smoke on opening the bottle; pours a huge white pillowy head and active small bubbly yellow glowing body. Wheat, citric, crisp, white bread aroma with simple Belgian yeast clearly present. Smooth body with lots of sugar present. Alcoholic warming throat feel. Simple, clean bitterness, light spice, lowly hopped. Extremely uninmaginative and straighforward, but not badly made. Too much sugar for it’s own good, to lift the taste. (33cl bottle from Bierparadijs)
2.5 Bottle. Slightly murky orange pour, small white head. Smells fruity but tastes pretty bad. Too old? Maybe.
3.8 33cl bottle. Cloudy light orange with very big white head. Nose : strong yeast notes, straw background. Soapy and peppery, fruity zest. Sip : decent carbonation, low to medium density liquid with oily texture. Moderatly sweet with aromas of yeast, zest and pepper. Little dry and bitter and it lasts quite a while. On the end some notes of fruity candy still with some more pepper. Quite nice brew. Drinkable and savory.
3.2 19th Oct 2012. 33cl bottle (8% ABV) poured into the correct stemmed tulip @ ’t Puur Genot, a strange Irish type bar in Diest: I was there for the small Diest Beer Festival which was the following day. A huge head of white foam sat on top of the dull amber/yellow body which was slightly cloudy. Actually the head tasted and had a better aroma than the beer below! The head gave off a powerful bitter hop aroma and tasted very simular: when I got down to the beer it was all a bit calmer and less intense. Yeasty, fruity and maltier than the intitial foaming head taste: still hop bitter, but it had lost its ’umph’ and I didn’t really enjoy the beer once all the other flavours joined in. Lets just call it different and difficult to score objectively.
3.5 330ml bottle - pours golden with a creamy, steady white head. Aromas of malt, some citrus and hops. Medium fresh body with a creamy mouthfeel, sweet undertone, slight spicy finish, bitterness only kicks in in the end. Taste is very very malty.

3.4 Pour is a dirty blond with a small white head. Aroma is a apple cider with a strong yeastyness. Flavor is citrus fruity and a nice fresh hop. Finish leaves some mild sweetness with a little bite of tartness. This was a good beer a month past its prime but for $2 outta the bargan bin this was a nice find.
