4.1350 ml can in Kyoto at a temperature of about 57F.
Pours essentially black with a tall, thick, beige head that has excellent retention.
Medium-light strength for style with mild bitterness.
Feel: Super creamy smooth feel in the full but not thick body.
Overall: excellent! Markedly better than the over-rated Minoh Stout I had the same day.
3.333cl bottle from Takumi, KL.
Thin tan head. Clear almost black pour. Quite a decent stout.
3.1Bottle. Dark black, no head. Malty aroma almost like an lighter cocoa oatmeal stout. Dark roasted malts, a little medicinal herbs, molasses. Abit boozy, tatses more like a baltic porter to me. All in all the alcohol (7%) is too apparent. Medium bodied which was nice and silky, but there was some metal, not the best ever, I prefer the blonde Echigo lager.
3.98th Dec 2017. 330ml bottle into a lovely 'Kasteel' stemmed glass at my daughters place in Laguna Niguel, California. Bought from the local BevMo along with a few more beers to try while on holiday. Dark and clean body, decent tanned topping. Malty and full flavoured, semi-sweet with a good hop presence that kept the sweetness in check. Really enjoyed this.
3.6It pours dark brown with a brown head. It has a thick head that is light brown with moderate retention. It has a sweet rich malty chocolate aroma to begin with. There is a bit of roast in the background. In addition, there is a very low fruit note. There is a balance in the flavor that is more towards the roasted malt with the chocolate in the background. There are low notes of fruit. The finish is a balance between the dry roast and a hint of sweetness. It has a moderate body with moderately low carbonation that is a bit silky. Overall, this is a showcase of roast and chocolate with a tinge of sweetness throughout the taste.
3.5Bastante normal
3.4350ml Can from Liquor Mountain, Kyoto (¥246):
An okay Japanese stout that featured some pleasant roasted malts & some interesting smoked flavours in the early going, although the latter was fleeting. The beer was balanced but basic with some coffee & chocolate coming through at times too, definitely worth a try if you're in Japan but I'm not entirely sure it's one I'd put on the 1001 beers list.
3.1350ml can from Liquor Mountain, Kyoto. Pours dark brown, almost black with a small head. Aroma of earthiness, mild roastiness and syrup. Taste is watery, earthy and slightly roasty with some berries, syrup and toffee notes. Finish is slightly roasty and earthy with some hints of syrup. Decent.
3.2Can. Very dark brown, average and mostly diminishing light brown head. Moderate, malty and lightly sweetish aroma, ligh coffee - faint licorice and light hoppyness. Body is medium, malty and lightly sweetish - sweetish flavor, faint roastiness and light coffee with faint licorice, faint - light hoppyness. Finish is average, malty and lightly sweetish, faint roastiness and light - some coffee with faint licorice, light hoppyness. OK porter with roastiness - could be little bit drier.
3.6Visual: (cellared for 5 years). Pours dark cola brown without a significant head, thick ringed retention, lots of clustered very active micro streams.
Nose: caramel liquid barley malt, light roast, hints of nutty. (lvl-8)-pungency, much stronger as it warms
Attack: dull crisp, soft light creamy, sweet caramel malt impression
Mid-palate: flat-tingly, (lvl-5-sweetness), molasses barley malt, light roast caramel malt, nutmeg, biscuity
Finish: hints of chocolate, lingering nutty-woody light bitter, cola
Summary: A very easy-to-drink 7%er stout with a solid balance of sweet and roasted malt. Slightly heavy malty sweet by the end but there’s enough complexity to balance it out. It lacks a bit of creaminess and push at the finish.
3.3Burk. Mörkt brun, nästan svart, med ett givmilt beigt skum. Dofter av rostad malt, karamell, brunt socker och choklad. Smakinslag av choklad, rostad malt, röda bär och karamell. Torr munkänsla.
3.3Bottle - Dark roast and chocolate with some molasses notes. Dark brown with a small beige head. Much like it tastes with a touch of toast.
3.3Mörkt brun öl med ett ljusbrunt skum. Doft och smak av karamell, malt och rostade toner. Detsamma återkommer i smaken. Även lättare inslag av choklad i såväl doft som smak. Torr munkänsla.
3.8Can. Dark brown pour. Tan head. Coffee, malt, barley aroma. Thick coffee, barley, tree, oak, cocoa and cream. Finishing vanilla with some bitter. Dark. Really good.
3.733 cl can, bought in Tokyo in January 2017. Black color. Big dense beige head with good retention. Aroma’s: big roast, a bit drop, caramel/dark sugar. Retronasal there’s caramel, roast, coffee/mocha, hints of red fruit. Flavor is moderate sweet, roasty, Below medium body. Finish is slightly dry, lots of roast, light bitterness. Body could have been a tad bit fuller, but a fine stout otherwise.
4.6From Wasabi. In Teku glass. After dinner. 2006 batch. 5 days after BB date. Very smooth, with lots of chocolate and slight coffee notes. Like a sessionable imperial stout.
3.6Negra espuma cremosa beige, duradera. Aroma muy tostado. En boca sabor a malta tostada, catacter entre dulce y ahumado, sabrosa, notas de chocolate. Cuerpo moderado, final seco y más amargo.
3.4Bottle at my parents. Pitch black in colour. Very smooth, mild stout. Lightly roasty, coffee, slight vanilla. Medium body.
3.4Bottle at Kogiya Korean BBQ in Annandale, VA. Poured into a small glass. Dark brown with beige head. Aromas of roast and caramel. Tastes of roast, caramel, dark fruit, chocolate. Medium-light body with a dry finish.
3.3Can 35cl / Lata 35cl.
@ VAL Oyama, Oyama, Japon.
A: Dark brown / Marron oscuro.
T/S: Roasted malt, sweet, chocolate / Malta tostada, dulce, chocolate.
3.8Black with a medium beige head. Roasted malts and coffee in the nose. Light in the palate, with a strong dark malt character and hints of coffee, chocolate and vanilla. Sticky, soft carbonation, quite tasty. A very decent classic stout.
2.6Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is clear dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, husks, dark chocolate), with a hint of berries. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, husky. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
A rather industrial, simple, grainy-husky beer. Since I got this in Maui I feared it would be badly oxidized, esp. considering dark beers show oxidation a lot more readily, but to my surprise there was no trace of cardboard in either the nose or aftertaste. Too bad it’s not a better beer.
3.5Bottle from Yamaya in Ashiya.
Aroma: Charred/heavy roasted coffee beans, rich dark chocolate.
Palate: Light-Medium bodied and very smooth with pleasant mouthfeel.
Flavor: Rich chocolate with smoky burnt, somewhat bitter coffee. Some bready character on the mid-palate.
Comment: Good, though I would like the bodied not to have thinned out so quickly. A fuller, richer body, like Tazawako’s Dark Lager, would earn it several more points.
3.6Bottle at home. Pours black with a large, frothy beige head, long retention with light lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, and nutty malt with light ash and oysters. Flavor is roast and chocolate malt, oysters, light earthy hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.233 cl bottle @ Timo A. Thanks rosenbergh!
Pours dark mahogany red color with a small head. Dry malty aroma, molasses, coffee and toasted malts, some dark fruits too. Dry oaty with rye and malts on the flavor, spices and some hops. Not very pleasant, a bit watery even.

2.5330 ml bottle. From a trade with IslandHaole. Thanks a lot Dan!
Clear reddish brown color with a tan head.
The aroma is berries, berry jam, sweetness, molasses and some malt.
The flavor is sweetness, mild metal, some molasses, malt and berry jam.
3.1A deep dark stout with a thick frothy mocha head. In aroma, sweet chocolate malt with light coffee notes, light vanilla extract, light mineral notes, OK. In mouth, a sweet bitter chocolate with light coffee notes, burned toasts, light mineral notes, grassy hops, OK. Can from Citysuper Causeway Bay, 18HKD.
3.5L: pours a dark cola brown with a tiny head that was gone quickly. S: a one-dimensional aroma of rich roasted malt, perhaps a hint of chocolate. T: starts off quite aqueous but that dark rich malt creeps in. Some sweetness.
F: low carbonation, light feel but medium-strength flavour. A malt bill more like a foreign stout, gentle hopping.
O: I remember this more fondly a year or so back, perhaps my palate now detects the lack of complexity. Decent cheap local stout though.
3.1Bottle from BevMo! in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is roasted malts. Taste is mild roasted malts. Watery, soaked roasted malts. Meh.
2.6Pours a dark ruby red color with a short lived tan head. The aroma was of a light roasted malt with dark chocolate notes. The flavor was a light roasted malt taste. The body was rather thin with a chalky metallic aftertaste. Overall it was okay at best.
