Eel River Certified Organic Porter

Eel River Certified Organic Porter

No other beer shows off what malts can do in a beer better than porter. Certified Organic Porter uses a complex blend of five malts that compliment and highlight one another in a harmonious mixture. Only one addition of imported Pacific Gem hops is used to provide a balancing bitterness without introducing any other hop character. While decidedly in the robust porter category, Certified Organic Porter has none of the harsh character people often associate with dark ales. Instead, what one finds is a rich, smooth beer with suggestions of chocolate and just a hint of coffee. So smooth and malty, this porter will convert even the non-dark beer drinker.

3.1 Bottle shared with Ran & Dale at their house in Escondido, CA, 21.4.16. Dark brown with a frothy beige head. Malty aroma with the slightest caramel notes, very malty bitterness with some simple chocolate. Too light of a body, quite carbonated, a little roasty aftertaste.
3.5 Bottle picked up locally at home. Pours a dark cola brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, dark chocolate, some coffee, earthy notes, perhaps a hint of tobacco, lighter bodied, seems fresh but just a tad thin, ok.

4.0 12oz bottle (Courtesy of Headbanger) poured into an English Pint at 41°. Color is a dark brown with a bit of maroon. Carbonation is good with a small tight tan head. Aroma is toffee and roasted malt. Body is medium with a crisp light mouth feel. Flavor is deep roasted malt that gives a note of toffee sweetness, then coffee and a touch of dark fruit. After taste is more roasted malt and a dry feel. Overall it’s a great Porter, complex with a nice balance of sweet and roasted flavors.
3.6 Bottle from Prima Beer. Clear dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt and licorice. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet and roasted moderate bitter finish. 010316
3.6 Keg at Delirium Hoppy Loft, Brussels. Black with cream head. There is a chocolate character from the start, lightly lactic with a fruity, sultana note alongside. There are fruity, oily hop notes thrown into the mix. Quite easy drinking and smooth. A pretty decent beer.
3.6 Tap at the Delirium Hoppy Loft, Brussels. Poured a clear light brown with a thin broken off white head. The aroma is a buttery nutty malt. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter with a smooth creamy caramel malt palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.
3.4 Draft at Delirium Hoppy Loft. Pours dark brown with a ring bubbly off white head. Aroma of cocoa, licorice, soy and malts. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
3.5 Thx! for sharing. Sampled draft @ Delirium Hoppy Loft. Dark brown amber, mocha bubbles. Nose sweet sugary soy sauce, mocha bubbles, caramel. Taste is powdery, sugary soy sauce, caramel, burned sugar, oily herbs, powdery chocolate, faint roast. Oily body. Just about okay, a bit bland, neither exciting or very expressive.

3.7 355 ML from Epping Cellars Dark cola color with some ruby highlights. Light tan head, good collar that sticks around a while. Nose is roast, licorice, coffee, milk chocolate. Taste is roast, earth, coffee, milk chocolate, and lots of licorice. Medium bodied, a bit thin in stretches but great lingering bitterness. Well balanced. Does not knock your socks off but very solid and well crafted beer.
3.5 12oz bottle 1/20/15 (Courtesy of TerryR)-46° in Shaker-Pours cola colred with a small head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste of the same. This medium bodied brew is well balanced.
3.8 Aroma: toast, coffee, Appearance: clear brown color with a good head, Taste: medium sweetness, Palate: light body, thin feel, lively. I’d expected a little more from this one.
3.8 Bottle from Wine Emporium 051214.thin bodied with a fair amount of chocolate in the flavour. Nice strong finish.
3.7 From a bottle. Pours black and thick with a lasting thin tan head, lasting bitter roasted flavours.
2.3 (Bottle) Very little hoppiness but lingering bitterness and astringency. There isn’t really any nice dark maltiness to it. Although the aroma is of chocolate (and is really quite nice), the taste is uninteresting, thin, and muddled. Compared to other porters it has very little rich chocolate or dark fruit flavors that I look for. I’m very surprised by how well this is rated. Not a good porter.
3.4 bottle @ Jungle Jim’s / Eastgate OH --- Opaque dark brown color, rocky 1" tant head that retains well, bands of lace. Taste is good roasted malt with a dose of chocolate (I don’t really detect coffee). Both merge and move smoothly to a lightly bittered finish. More sweet shows the longer it lingers. A very drinkable/enjoyable light stout, somewhat rich and milky. I like it.
3.6 12 oz bottle consumed in Redwoods Park at about 55F. Nearly opaque red-brown; very good, durable tan head that leaves ample sticky lacing. Aroma: dark bread with hints of smoke, toffee and dark fruits Flavor: Follows the promise of the aroma. Moderate level of dark roasted malts flavor. Faint coffee in the aftertaste. Feel: soft medium carbonation. Near medium body.
3.9 This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a nice dark brown color with a one and a half white to off white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute in a concave fashion. The lacing sticks finely to the sides of the glass. The smell has a nice sharp robust roasty coffee blended nicely with some light chocolate. The taste has a smooth rolling flavorful blend of coffee to chocolate with a nice light maltiness just rolling underneath it all. There’s a decent rich smooth coffee to chocolate aftertaste that leads to a nice smooth sticky finish. On the palate, this one sits about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation is fairly low in this beer but still good for the style and for me. Overall, wow, what a nice Porter. Organic or not, I don’t care, I’d have this again.
3.9 Pours black with a quickly fading head. Nose shows some chocolate, a little roasted malt, some faint coffee. Appetizing. Relatively subtle flavours, some roast and soft liquorice along with bready and toasty malt. A bit of acidity from the roast. Nice moderate carbonation.
4.0 Wow thats good, I like it. Strong chocolate. Thick body. 2 bonus pts on overall for being organic. Silky smooth.
3.6 Beige coloured head dark pour medium carbonation aromas roast coffee bean vanilla caramel rich chocolate the flavours very malty good rich chocolate caramel roast coffee medium bitter liquorice crisp hops the finish clean crisp porter malt tastes are solid good sweetness nice bitter and hop finish good porter
3.6 This is an old log that I’m filling in so I do not remember the specifics of the tasting.
2.7 Bottle. A dark brown beer with a beige head that’s soon less than a coat. Aroma of mocha and dark berries. Rather thin. Fairly dry with cocoa, Milo, some dark fruits, little bitterness, slightly astringent at the end. Some OK malty things going on, but it’s all a bit vague and athematic (unless "organic beers often lack presence" is a theme).
