Eel River Triple Exultation

Eel River Triple Exultation

Traditionally, Old Ales are an English style of dark, rich and sweet ale, typically with flavors of soft currant fruit and blackstrap molasses. While Old Ales typically have IBUs (bitterness) of 30-65, Eel River Brewing put their own spin on the style by adding extra hops to ramp up the IBUs to 80!

3.1 Bottle, 9.7% at KØ16. Mild malty aroma. Cloudy dark brown colour. Small frothy tan head. The flavour is quite malty and has a distinct bitterness. Spicy maltiness, and actually a rough bitterness. Quite bitter and boozy alcohol in the finish.

3.7 Bottle 650ml @ home Pours dark reddish brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, oxidization, dried fruits, citrus and orange. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and medium to heavy bitter with a long caramel, dried fruits, orange, citrus, oxidized with a weak hint of licorice in the finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.7 More American Barleywine than old ale to me, due to the citrus and bitterness from the hops. Lots of malt too...bread earth, molasses. A little heat. Nice beer overall, and one of the better ones I’ve had from them.
3.6 Bottle, 22oz. 2015 vintage. A murky brown beer, almost flat and headless. Some off-white bubbles though. Heavy malt aroma with prunes, oxidation, some berries and quite evident traces of hops. Toffee, some roasted malts and chocolate, a nice hoppy bitterness, raisins, some prunes and brown sugar. Full body and very smooth on the palate, with little carbonation. Some warmth. Hints of licorice in the finish, as well as all the other goodness found in the initial flavor. An intense beer, but sure nice. 160102

4.2 Hazy ruby/amber with a thin off white head. Plummy and fruity nose with belgian dark ale tones and a little cherry and belgian sugar and English old ale sweetness. Tasty flavor with just a hint more carbonation than it needs, with loads of date/plum/raisin, a hint of cherry, belgian dark candy sugar, English dark malt, belgian dark malt, and a slightly boozy raisiny finish. Nice.

4.0 Poured into an English pint glass. Dark cola brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is quite bready with some molasses and dark fruit. Flavor is sweet and malty with a nice earthy character, some dark fruit notes, and a mildly bitter finish with earthy hops. Medium to full bodied with some stickiness and a long finish. Overall a nice old ale that is accentuated by some increased hop usage.
4.0 Once again, I could select adjective that are imperfect for describing this tasty brew were the hour not so late and the bottle not so empty.
3.7 Bottle - Vintage 2009 - Cocoa and dark sugary malts. Deep cloudy copper brown with a decent beige head. Dark sugars, burnt notes and light bitterness. A bit of spice and light boozy notes. Held up well for 5 years.
3.8 A clear red/amber colored beer, with a light beige head. The aroma of fruits, malts, raisins and spices. The taste of some alcohol fruits, spices. A little burny. The aftertaste is bitter, dry with some sweet.
3.4 Bottle. Dark amber colour with a small diminishing head. The aroma has notes of caramel, light hops, a nutty side. The flavour is sweet with a good caramel flavour, not a strong finish. Good without being exciting.
3.1 [ Bottle ][ 22oz ][ DedicatedToFun ][ Tasting ][ Globe ][ 10.31.14 ] >> Clearish deep amber to red pour. Weaker head, yellow bubbles. Nose is maple, brown sugar, citrus hops. Taste is hoppy, spicy, brown sugar, paper, spicy hops. Slight astringency and paper. Harsher palate. Feels more like an old DIPA.
3.2 Bomber, brown amber pour, tan head, nose is caramel, taste is boozy, more caramel, decent
4.0 A great ale, very unique and complex. Pours a beautiful deep red with a thick tan frothy head. Smells of cherries, vanilla, coffee and nuts. Taste has vanilla upfront, followed by cinnamon and pecans, and brandy. Some carmelized sugar and a bit of fruitiness in the finish. Had in the bottle, unaged.
3.6 Pours a caramel brown with a tan head. Malt, toffee, caramel, dark fruit and plum aroma. Toffee, caramel, molasses, raisin, date, malt, hop and alcohol flavors. Medium full body and average carbonation. Malt, toffee and alcohol finish.
3.2 This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a hazy golden burnt orange to caramel brown color with a thin layer of a white head. Once the head died down, there was some light stringy lacing here and there. The smell had some light burnt raisins along with some caramel malts. There’s a light brown sugar trying to make an effort to flow forth but it mainly stays subdued. The taste was mainly sweet but had an element of sour sweet candy which was the same aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat right at a medium on the body with a tad of sessionability about it. The carbonation was subdued but still good for its style. Overall, I say this was a pretty good old ale.
3.9 650ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep chestnut, with a large light beige head, which lasts very well and leaves excellent lacing. There is plenty of plum and raisin old ale character in the aroma, but balanced by a more savoury, nutty note and strong herbal hops. Bitter herbal and pine hops up front give way to treacle and plum in the mid-palate. Nutty, meaty notes come into a savoury finish. This is a very unusual old ale, much more savoury and with way more hops character than I would expect. It is still highly enjoyable, but definitely a little odd.
4.1 650ml bottle from Archive Beer Boutique. Rating from April 2014. Poured a sark brown to copper colour with fruit cake an Christmas pudding aromas. Big beer with a big alcohol presence.
4.4 Now that is what you want to taste and feel after having an English Old-Style Ale. Perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness.
