3.9very good malty smell...taste is the same pretty bold and flavorful.... dark dark malt quite good and smooth... only had a bit...HAVE TO TRY AGAIN...john’s house olympics/D&D
3.011.2 oz. bottle. Poured near black, off white head. Aroma was faint chocolate, malts, toasted barley, bit skunky. Taste was watered down toasted grain, sweet.
3.2Bottle. Pours clear brown color. Medium sweet taste. Medium-light body, light bitterness in the finish. Aroma was mild, bready malt.
2.7Klares braun schaum ok, Geruch malzig leichte röst Aromen, Geschmack recht flach leicht süß einigermaßen herb mit wenig röst Aromen
3.9330 ml bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear deep ruby red/brownish color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light cocoa/coffee, herbal, light pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light cocoa/coffee, herbal, light pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light cocoa/coffee, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop/roast notes as well. Very clean on lager flavors with zero yeast notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a very nice Munich dunkel style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth, clean, and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
3.1En lidt tynd "dunkel", hvilket er en skam da Einbeck normalt laver nogle gode bitre øl. Denne er lidt flad i smagen, dog med en god lang eftersmag.
Kom igen Einbeck.
2.6Aroma: corn, roasted malts.
Appearance: clear brown color and beige head.
Taste: low bitterness, roasted malts, caramel, semi-dry.
Palate: medium body and medium carbonation.
Overall: Poor stuff.
2.9Draft as the trendier schwarzbier. Dark brown color, beige coca cola head. Aroma of malted milk balls. Taste has cocoa and coffee, light body. I guess we need a "trendy" tag.
3.2Caramel, a hint of dried fruit, bread, maybe some slight smoke or something like that. Very refreshing, but with some flavor as well.
3.8Bottle, somehow put in their schwarzbier bottle. I get dark fruits (plums), caramel, and some roasted malts. Taste is sweet finishing dry.
3.6Root-beer dark brown with a 5-mm coarse, foamy tan head that lingers as a thin film. Aroma is lager, pumpernickel, with a bit of sour dough and a hint of raw sugar. Body is medium-light, watery, a bit starchy, with soft, light, fat carbonation of medium-light intensity with pretty much no burn. Flavor is whole grain bread, touch of pumpernickel and grass, some slight grain sweetness, bread crust on the exhale. Clean with minimal bitterness. I am very impressed with the multifaceted bready notes in this beer. Body is top notch.
2.9Bottle here in the US, labelled as "Schwarzbier". Pours with little head. Quite dark, looks jet black unless I hold it up to the light, and then looks a dark reddish-brown. Aroma is strong, suggests molasses, caramel, dried fruit, overripe fruit, and a hint of vinegar. Smells surprisingly boozy, for the low alcohol content. Thick body, rich, heavy. Flavor a mix of sweet, sour, bitter, and savory flavors. Carbonation very slight, imparting only a hint of prickly sensation. I prefer lighter-bodied Dunkels. For how low the ABV was on this one, it was awful boozy and heavy, qualities I don’t like. I do like the complexity of this beer’s aroma, though. If you like imperial stouts, and you want something a little less alcoholic, this might be a good choice; this beer seemed pretty much like an imperial stout in flavor, aroma, and body.
3.9Dark lager with thick, creamy foam. Feels like silk on the tongue until a bitter brussel sprouts/ruccola-like aftertaste kicks in. The main taste is creamy, soft and sweet, in the middle between pilseners and red ales.
4.0It pours a very dark brown with reddish hues shining through.
Roasted malt in the smell along with a distinct hoppy bitterness.
Roasted malt bitterness up front with a biscuit malt and grain kick backing that up.
Light bodied with medium carbonation.
A very good Schwarzbier.
4.0Old rating rerated 29.07.2014, 0,33l bottle @ Artemis, Celle:
Big creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich and sweet, caramel malts, nuts, "knekk", hay, grass, hops, hints of chocolate. Taste is slightly dry roasted, caramel malts, hay, burnt caramel, soy sauce, coffee, grass hops. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel. Nice.
2.9Bottle bought in Germany. Dark with small head. Malty aroma and taste. Rather ordinary.
2.9Pours dark brown with thin white head. Aroma is apple, and sweet malt, honey. Taste is honey, floral, malty sweet, caramel. Light body.
2.8Bottle from backlog notes 07. Pours brown in color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel, doughy malt, grass, perhaps a hint of fruit character, the nose was weaker, the flavor pretty bland.
3.1Flaska. Mörkbrun öl med givmilt smutsvitt skum. I både doft och smak hittas rostad malt, rågbröd, havre och röda bär. Medel mot liten kropp. Vattnig munkänsla.
2.6Nothing to write home about here. Starts off bitter caramel, but flavor actually improves as it warms slightly. Maybe it’s just an acquired taste, but maybe it’s not too good. Guess I have five more tries to figure that out.
3.3Bottle. Pours a clear deep mahogany color with a nice head and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit and grain. taste follows with roasted malt, bit of dark fruit and caramel sweetness and grain. Solid bitterness and a dry finish with a lingering bitterness. Fairly light body, quite smooth but with a grainy texture. Decent beer for the style.
3.00,33 l bottle, typical Einbecker bottle design. Dark redbrown in the glass, beige head. Light sweet malt on the nose. Starts with more malt, first low sourness, followed by sweet sequencies.Later low roast malty on a mild level. Hints of Pilsener without herb. Okay.
3.1Bottle at the Dolphin Hotel at Disney Orlando. Poured into an American shaker pint. Dark brown pour with little head. Rather thin looking. Aroma of malts, some toast and roast, dark bread, and hop profile. Taste was rather bland with a hint of roasted malts and some hops to balance. Kind of watery. Thin body with some carbonation. Pretty mediocre.
3.1Bottle - pours dark amber with tan head. Nose is brown sugar and dark fruit. Sweet. Light to medium light body. Standard.
5.0This is my absolute 2nd favorite beer! It tastes great! Its not as bitter as most dark beers. I just wish it was easier to find around here. I drive an hour just to get this beer!
3.5My 33cl bottle was bought in Berlin: so it is just a ’dunkel’ on the label.
Poured into an ’Augustijn’ badged chalice at home on 26 Apr 2013.
Ruby coloured body, clean and clear: beige, full head.
The nose is more grainy than malty: with dark berry esters thrown in for good measure.
The taste is maltier than the aroma hints at and those grain smells don’t appear in the flavours. Undertones of sweetness which don’t surface fully hide behind a mild hop crispness that doesn’t turn the brew bitter or overly dry.
Interesting and one of the better German brewed Dunkels I’ve had so far.
