Einstök Icelandic Wee Heavy

Einstök Icelandic Wee Heavy

Five years ago today, Einstök Ölgerð began selling beer throughout Iceland. Now they serve their award-winning beers in 22 countries throughout the world and are the #1 craft beer out of Iceland. In a Reykjavik celebration held to thank their loyal Icelandic customers, Einstök officially launched its newest style, the Icelandic Wee Heavy.

Einstök Icelandic Wee Heavy is an 8.0 ABV Scotch Ale brewed with handpicked angelica and birch-smoked Icelandic barley. It will be sold year-round in 330ml bottles and on draft in various keg sizes. It is available now in Iceland and will be launched in Europe in the next few weeks. It will be available in the United States in early 2017.

Viking history in Scotland goes back a thousand years. Even our brewmaster studied in Edinburgh, where he carefully surveyed the local brew. Now we return with an Icelandic Scotch Ale, brewed with locally farmed and smoked barley and spiced with native Icelandic angelica – a fabled herb ancient Vikings used as currency. Surrender your taste buds. They have no choice but to be conquered.

Key Ingredients
Smoked Icelandic barley, pale ale malt, crystal malt, chocolate malt, Bavarian hops, Icelandic angelica root.

Tasting Notes
You are greeted by the rich color, creamy head, a sweet malt aroma and a hint of the smokiness delivered by the birch. The malty richness and caramel notes hit the tongue, with savory smoke coming later.

3.8 Backlog November 2017. Clear amber body under a small tan head. Aroma has sweet caramel malt with a hint of alcohol. Taste is smooth, sweet malt, caramel, dry fruit and warming alcohol. Fine body and long lasting aftertaste. Solid and nice.
3.7 Can. Amber pour. Aroma of caramelized malt, dried fruit, vanilla, caramel and dates. Taste has dates, caramelized malt, vanilla, raisin, caramel, subtle smoke and some sweet herbs. Nice tasty beer.
4.0 Satisfying dark beer with Smokey flavor
3.9 330 ml can. Barely translucent dark brown color has reddish highlights. Small pillowy tan head. Rich roasted malt nose hints at sweet licorice from the angelica. Soft, roasted malt flavor has notes of burnt sugar, licorice, cardamom and a subtle, underlying smokiness. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel is a pleasurable addition. Overall, a very faithful take on the style. Quite tasty.
3.5 Tumman ruskea lasissa. Maltainen, makea, pähkinäinen tuoksu. Suutuntuma on paksu. Mausta löytyy maltaista makeutta, toffeeta ja pähkinää. Lopuksi humalan mukanaan tuomaa katkeroa.
3.6 Wee heavy ('Scotch') from Iceland's foremost craft brewery, can bought online from Ace Drinks. Thick and frothy, yellowish pale beige, dense, even-bubbled, lacing head on a misty chestnut brown beer with ruddy maroon hue. Aroma of butterscotch, caramel candy, ground hazelnuts, candied fig, freshly baked brown bread, walnut butter, Madeleine cookies, sugared tea, 'Koetjesreep', nutmeg, hint of roasted chicory, very vague green plant note from the angelica. Sweetish onset in a clean way, hints of dates, blue plum and unripe banana, softish and fine-bubbled carb, full but very smooth, almost buttery mouthfeel; deeply caramelly and butterscotch-like malts fill the mouth, with a brown-bready core and toasted bitter edges, moving gently from sweet to bitter, with some additional herbal hop bitterness in the finish. The caramelly effect makes place for this bitterness but the finish does remain primarily malty and clean, with a late but palpable, warming, somewhat peppery whisky-ish alcohol presence briefly highlighting the bitterness. Technically very solid - as always with Einstök - and flavour-wise very typically Scotch indeed, with no further frills other than the addition of angelica - which is all but unnoticeable so its presence hardly matters; feels a bit old school, and that is exactly what I expect from this style. Clean, supple but powerful, malty and elegant in a relatively simple way, the only criticism I can give here is that the alcohol could be better hidden as it is very tastable in the end, but otherwise well done and very convincing for its intended style.
3.7 Brown sugar. Malt. Vanilla. Dates. Raisins. Pours dark coffee brown with an off white/light tan head. Fades quickly. Medium bodied. Soft but with a little bitter edge on the finish. Muted earth. Wood. Faint sweetness. Hints of dark fruit. Nice.
3.7 Flaska från Hopt.se. Mahognyfärgad öl med ett kvardröjande beige skum. Doft och smak av karamell, malt, lätt kryddighet och lätta rostade toner.
3.6 Deep cola brown, light tan head. Brown sugar, caramel, toffee, molases, hint of raisin and fig. A bit fruity, good palate. Can from Norm's in Vienna, VA.
3.3 12 oz bottle of unknown origin (pretty sure one of my wife's friends left it here a few weeks back), 9/19/21. Muddy dark reddish color. Caramel, toffee, brown sugar. Decent feel, slightly thin. Hides the alcohol nicely.
4.0 Malty nose with caramel and Heather and peat. Dark Amber with nice head. Taste is slight alcoholic but lots of malts. Palate is long and slight smokey.
3.3 Can. Brown color. Toffee in the aroma. Soft roast, toffee and some alcohol in the somewhat sticky flavor. Sweet, nevertheless pleasant.
3.9 Muddy brown with small white head. Smell of barley, caramel and hints of smoke. Taste is great with barley, dried dades, raisins, caramel, licorice and coffee. Nice bitterness. It was taken out of the fridge - maybe served a bit too cold. Very nice beer. Tasted with Niels at home - the day before his moving to Copenhagen.
3.8 Aroma of sweet malt, slight smoke, caramel, dried fruits and dates Dark brown muddy colour with small head Taste is sweet barley, caramel, mild bitterness, dates and coffee? Medium carbonation with fizzy mouthfeel Really nice! Tasted before my moving day with dad
3.6 Shared 11.2 oz. can poured to a snifter showing a hazed, brownish amber color, with a decent layer of off white froth, and spots & strands of lacing. The nose was toasted+ malt, dried fruit, and subtle peat smoke. Medium bodied, with okay carbonation, the taste was as the aroma notes, adding complementary, earthy bitterness to the finale. Not altogether Wee Heavy, imo, but with some heat and good flavor.
3.5 Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of caramel malt and some light spices. Medium body. Semi sweet malty taste with some earthy notes and spice flavors. Finishes smooth with a lingering light herbal aftertaste. Fairly enjoyable. Tastes lighter than other Wee Heavy styles I have had. Hides the alcohol well.
3.9 Dark copper brown, white head. Pete smoked aroma, caramel, tobacco, red berries. A little sweet, a hint of mint, but very complex and tasty.
3.8 Aroma of caramel, and smokiness. Muddy dark brown pour. Taste is smoked barley, caramel, Belgian sugars, dark fruit, cherry, nutty.
3.2 Red brown with a large foamy tan head. Malty and woody with smoke and a light fruity note. Medium finish and body.
3.8 12oz CaN with January 7th 2021 born on date (not july 1st 2021 as that has not happened yet). Nose is butterscotch (a reduction of sorts) and buttery biscuits (the Breton kind). Sip ads more of the aroma with a strong malt presence: the color red comes to mind. Not exactly sweet but heavy nonetheless. A tad boozy on the finish - a winter warmer.
3.5 Amber in color with a three-finger head. Aroma is caramel, roasted malts and grains. Taste is toffee, caramel, nuts and roasted.
3.6 Pours a reddish brown with an off-white head. Aroma of dark fruit, smoke, and caramel. Dark fruit and caramel sweetness with notes of smoke and spice. Full body. Good beer.
4.0 can. Reddish brown with a khaki colored head . Aroma of toffee, caramel and well roasted grains. Tastes like the aroma--big sticky toffee and malts profile. Palate is full and robust with soft carbonation. Overall: rather nice.
3.7 It pours brown with slight clouding. It has a tan head. Head retention is very good. It does has a sweet smoky aroma to start off with. It is quite herbal with the background support. It is malty and smokey with a strong herbal mixture. There are some background caramel and alcohol notes. There is a bit of spice as well with slight dried cherry. It has a full body, but not quite chewy. The herbal and spice characteristics are quite dominant in the finish. Overall, it is unique compared to most beers I've had including Wee Heavys'. I would say well done overall.
3.4 Bottle from Cafe Blu. Mildly sweet biscuit-malty nose. Very sweet, moderate complexity, not too much dark roast, reminds me of a dunkles Bock. Dark brown sugar on the aftertaste with moderate/low bitterness. I get a tiny hint of smoke but not much.
4.0 Wow. En god og velsmagendew øl. Masser af fylde og god indbydende aroma. Tilpas bitterhed
4.1 Aroma with toasted caramel light smokiness and spice. Nice toasted caramel and toffee with an interesting spiciness and light smokiness. Finishes on the sweeter side with a lingering roasted toffee and delicate smokey bitterness with a slight hit of dried dark fruit. Very nice!
