Ellezelloise Hercule Stout

Ellezelloise Hercule Stout

Bottle; Unfiltered.

The only self-proclaimed ‘Belgian stout’ – 9% by volume – named after famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirrot and considered a World Classic.

Made in small batches, then lagered for ten days in German oak casks.

"The Hercule is considered by many to be a classic – very malty, but dry, with a hint of sweetness in the finish, and perfectly hopped. It has a very distinctive and intoxicating spicy aroma of fresh spruce that suddenly, irresistibly, fills the room when the swing-top is released. This unique house character probably derives from the strains of yeast used by the brewery – and possibly from the fermentation in oak – because the beers are made entirely of malt and hops, without any spices or sugar."

5.0 Perfect balance of everything. A short suprise at start with relativly low carbonization but a clear winner in the long run. My number one beer for over two years now.
3.4 Bottle from Beers Of Europe. Black body with a thin beige head. Faint lacing. Aroma of raisins and liquorice. Flavour of prunes and Dr Pepper. Medium body with a slick texture. Light fizz. This drinks well for the strength. It’s less rich and dark than most other Imperial Stouts I’ve tried.
4.0 Dark brown with a one finger wide beige head. Smell of caramel, chocolate and coffee. Sweet coffee taste with some hoppy bitterness and malty whisky notes. Low carbonation.
3.3 330ml glass bottle dated as best before 05/2020 from Vini Vivi, West Hampstead. Served fridge cold into a goblet. The beer pours a velvety black colour, with one finger of off white head, creamy in texture. The head dissipates down to a thick layer that slowly recedes in a crescent like fashion. A nice thick lacing is left as the drink goes down. The aroma is quite strong. In the beginning a hit of fruity orange, followed with coffee, oak, sourness. Liquorice. Nothing sweet or too bitter. A real alcohol presence, similar to a liquor like brandy or cognac. Surprisingly the alcohol presence doesn’t come through in the taste. The coffee does big time as does a fresh fruity flavour. The oak and the real lambic like sourness are what dominates. The sour taste seems to grow in dominance as the beer warms. Different to what I was expecting. Nothing rememerable in the way of mouthfeel. But a balance of sour and light bitter from the coffee linger on the palate. Overall, a slow drinker. Complex and well made. I’m not sure it is a beer I’d seek out again but very different for the style.
Classique.

3.5 Shared @ Koelschtrinkers tasting. Smooth mild beginning. Roasted caramel, very dry with hints of sourness. Smooth mild, sessionable with a fruity dry malty ending. Not too much bitterness.
3.7 330ml bottle from ORB Easter Belgium Beer Festival 2019. Black brown colour, beige foam head leaving lots of lacing and aroma of dark fruity, malt, roasty, chocolate. Taste is tart fruity, malt, roasty, dark chocolatey, with some bitterness. Medium bodied, soft to medium carbonation, dry roasty booy finish. Quite drinkable.
3.4 bottiglia 33 cl, schiuma fine cappuccino persistente, colore marrone/nero, al naso caffè e solvente, in bocca cioccolato fondente caffè, corpo rotondo, watery (nooo per un’ Imperial Stout) alcool ben bilanciato, acidula, lieve astringente carbonazione moderata, attacco dolce con amaro moderato. Bevuto di gran lunga meglio. Manca di carattere. Difettosa? c. Luppoli e Uva Varese 12.04.19
4.1 Dark brown, nutty stout. Lots of flavour and a great pint. Defo something to try!
3.3 Huge thanks to JefVerstraete for that one! Bottle looks simple but good. Ber in the glass dark brown, small head. Dry malty aroma with a fruity touch. Starts fine malty, light roasty. Some light sourish hints, some chocolate. Fruity hints of berries. Finish well balanced. Nice!
3.8 Copenhagen 20/2 2019. 33 cl bottle from Køl Beer Webshop (kolbeer.com). Drawing of good old Poirot in Peter Ustinov inspired version on the label. Pours opaque dark brown with big light beige head. Bubbly but fairly stable. Settles as 3 cm thick Crown of foam. Substantial Lacing. Aroma is dark sweetish with strong yeasty notes and a sharp, sourish odor rummaging in the background. Caramel, licorice, humid basement and hints of tart berries. Strong alcoholic presence. Light carbonation. Slightly thick, Soft but lightly prickly texture. Flavor is fairly sweet followed by a more moderate but notable sourish bitterness. Aftertaste is tart with a sweet undercurrent. Lingers for a while. Lightly Berning alcohol. Fairly fresh and easy to drink for a Stout with a ABV of 9,0.
3.5 330 ml bottle. Murky black with big creamy head. Dry citrus notes, burnt malt, toffee, liquorice, raisin, some smoky notes, robusta coffee acidity. A lot of dry bitterness, malty sweetness, some sourness. Full bodied, oily texture, soft to lively carbonated, intense dry bitter finish, alcohol is more or less hidden. A bit too sour, but good overall.
3.7 0,33l bottle. Pours dark brown/near black with off-white head. Aroma of blackcurrant, coffee, dark chocolate, roast. Taste is coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruits/blackcurrant again. Fizzy, medium to full bodied. Blackcurrant/dark fruit is a bit too overpowering in the nose.
3.5 From the bottle. Pours with a light beige head that fades. Chocolate aroma with a noticeable berry twang and, oddly, horseshit. The latter did disappear quickly though. Taste is sweet up front, finishes bittersweet with a light tang. Medium body, soft carbonation. Not bad.
Molto buona!
3.7 10-09-18 // taster from bottle at Le Chapitre Namur, Belgium.Black. Roasted malts. Chocolte. Bitter chocolate. Coffee. Nice.
