Elysian Savant IPA

Elysian Savant IPA

Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows It’s a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that it’s built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that it’s bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that it’ll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone who’s counting), but what it mainly knows is that it’s a great beer.

3.6 Pous deep amber with little head. A powerdul flowery aroma with hints of grapes and white wine. Dry with a good bitter finish.
3.7 Cloudy orange pour. Sharp hop bitterness in nose. Very sharp bitterness I am assuming from high AA in the nelson. Bitterness lingers.
4.1 Murky orange pour. Thin, off white head with very little carbonation. Hoppy taste on the front and back in. Good example of the style.
3.5 Dark golden color for an ipa, bitter with nice fruit from Nelson hops, subtle aroma at least for me
5.0 22 oz bottle. Aroma: citrusy and malty, with hints of pineapple, bread, and barnyard. Taste/Palate: creamy; starts sweet, and finishes with a long bitterness.
3.0 A good IPA, but not a great one. Has nice citrus hop flavours and a beautiful pour, but I enjoyed most of Elysian’s other IPAs more.
3.7 A nice fruity IPA with tons of complex fresh hop flavor. Pours a slightly reddy golden orange with a thin white head. Peppery and spicy hops with a bit of floral flavour. A nice full flavored hopped up brew.
3.9 Appearance is a cloudy orange amber color supporting a healthy head leaving nice lace. Smell has a nice backbone of sweet malt and citrusy hop aroma. Taste of the sweet malt and big on the grapefruit flavor with a nice balance of hops. Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. A very nice easy drinking IPA.
3.4 Draft - Bold citrus and pine hops. Clear copper with a decent white head. Bitter pine, citrus peel and a bit of caramel. Long bitter finish.
3.7 On tap at Old Line Bistro in Beltsville MD. Pours amber and has quite potent hops aroma. Taste is quite citrusy and bitter. Delicious and knocks you on your butt if an empty stomach. Good IPA.
3.5 Nice hop aroma on the nose. Very dominant hop mouthful, with a subtle malt after tone. The palate lingers with the hops more than anything. Solid ipa.
3.2 Bottle. Pours a mostly clear amber color with a moderate off white head on there. Nicely hoppy nose with some grass and floral notes along with a hint of citrus. Taste is bitter, but feels heavy and stronger than it actually is.
3.8 Pours a clear amber color with minimal head. Aroma of fruit, caramel, but in the milder side. Taste was on the tropical fruit side, begins sweet, but then ends with a nice hop bitterness. I’ve enjoyed the few Elysian beers that I’ve gotten to try and you can add this one on there as well. Solid beer and awesome label (they make some really cool labels on their beers).
3.4 From bomber. Pours a beautiful clear dark honey color with a medium thickness dense foamy head and lots of lacing. Aroma of tropical fruits. Bitter taste. There’s some fruity malty character, but the bitterness of the hops dominates. Bitter finish.
3.6 Bomber. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. A big fruity nose, caramel, some watermelon. The flavor is initially big cat pee, melons, citrus, mild bitterness, dusty round malty profile. A bit of an odd heat/bitterness in this. Interesting beer. Not bad. Cool label. The whole package is odd, very tropical and spicy, even floral. It works.
3.6 Dark amber with thick lace. Meaty beer with tasty hops. Citrusy with a strong malt backbone.
3.5 Bottle from The Wine Emporium 100914. Not bad, tasty enough without being overly hoppy. Decent beer.
2.9 Hazy dull tan, moderate aroma with a bit each of malt, fruit and hop. Medium bitterness, dash of alcohol, fairly sweet malts until the fruity hop character slides in.
4.5 Powerful fruit and citrus aroma, reminding me of candied apples. The nose immediately draws you in to the beer. It is a slightly hazy orange amber. The malt is complex but overall sweet. Caramel, toffee and earthy notes give way to piney hop flavors, finish astringent and dry. Bitterness is lasting but not overwhelming. West coast IPA brewers should definitely learn from the malt complexity. Hell, Elysian should learn how to translate this to their other brews! This beer is fantastic.
4.6 Smells like apple juice, and has a solid amber color. The flavor is very juicy, and highly acidic, like malic acid found in Green Apples (used to make sour candies), but with sort of a sweet cover. It ends up smelling and tasting a lot like candied apples. It also has a flowery smell and taste underneath, coming off like like the leaves of an apple tree. As you can probably tell, this is a very interesting, and very complex beer. Overall it is, very fresh, and easy to drink.
4.2 Surprisingly malt-forward IPA! Surprising, just because this is a PNW brew. But, quite good. The malts lead in, giving way to pine-oriented hops (with a touch of resin), and following through with sufficient bitterness. Very well done.
3.9 On tap at the brewery. Clear burnt orange pour with a white head. Similar to the I-5 but sweeter with tropical fruit hop notes. The nose is tropical fruit hops. Good balance with a nice caramel malt backbone. Not overly bitter. Good mouthfeel.
3.7 Draught @ Elysian Brewing, Seattle, WA Pours dark orange with a sticky white head. Aroma of exotic fruits, crisp caramely malts, grass and herbal notes. Taste is sweet, juicy fruity and crisp biscuity malty with some caramel and grass. Finish is crisp, sweetish and malty with some caramel. Okay.
3.5 Good IPA. Subdued hops, not too bitter, not too mild with minimal malt back bone.
3.2 A pretty average American Pale Ale. The bottle says it is Savant, not Idiot.
3.1 From the bottle. Pours a cloudy reddish amber. Smaller tan head, good lacing. The smell is more malt than fruit ipa. Some citrus notes in the background. The taste is similar to the smell, backbone of malt and caramel with a little citrus hop. Finish is milder hop bitter but it is a raw hop taste, very green. Just an average ipa.
3.6 Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep golden amber color with a one finger head of just off white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading to leave a great level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is on the sweeter side with lots of caramel and some lighter fruit notes of a tropical variety. Along with these are some light aromas of a grapefruit hop as well as a bit of pine. Taste – The taste begins with a sweeter caramel taste with a little bit of fruity sweetness. Along with these are some lighter grapefruit hop flavors as well as a little bit of earthy hop. As the taste advances some floral hops increase in intensity with the caramel really getting rather strong toward the end of the taste. The earthy ups it up a bit at the end and with a light herbal flavor that also comes to the tongue leaving one with a sweet, but decently hopped IPA flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the medium side with a carbonation level that is average. The mid range body and carbonation are quite nice for the easy drinking nature of the brew, all while upholding the hop and sweeter flavors nicely. Overall – A rather easy drinking but quite tasty IPA. Not too high in abv. with a nice blend of hops. While nothing super out of the ordinary, it is rather tasty and at least worth one try.
3.0 Pour is a clear copper with a large white head. Aroma is a resiny hop with plenty of caramel malt to back things up. Flavor is moderately flavorful hops with a strong earthy malt with a little toffee left on the tongue. One of those IPA’s where the strong malt presence almost takes over any hop profile. Maybe the beer was a bit old but this hops should have come out more.
3.0 Bottle from a trade. Nose is fruity, light melon. Pours a hazy light red in color, small white head. Taste is initially sweet then shows some lightly roasted character. Finish is almost astringently bitter. Not my cup of IPA.
3.2 Bottle share thanks to Homer321. Mildly hazy dark orange. big danky hop aroma, earthy and citrusy. Hops more muted in flavor. Semi sweet, some citrus, quite bitter.
