4.0Bottle 330ml. Served at cellar temperature. Pours a hazy deep mahogany. Head is lightly tanned, foamy and lasts well. Aroma is rich with notes of burnt toffee, figs, roasted malts, caramelized dates, rum and raisin chocolate and a touch of smoke. Flavour is very smooth with a very light toasted bitterness; dates, prunes, dark cherries, burnt toffee, Belgian candi sugar, dark chocolate and a toasted finish. Full bodied with soft carbonation, thick texture and a long warming finish.
3.4At home. Bottle shared. Sweet toasted caramel malts, figgs, marmalade, gunpowder tea, black seaweed. Over medium sweet, over medium bitter. Full body, light grainy texture. Too much like sweetened bitter tea.
3.4Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Very dark reddish brown with off white head. Figs, raisins, caramel, quite some herbs and alcohol. Basically lots of herbal candies and Jagermeister. Medium sweet and a bit over medium bitter. Over medium bodied with nice fitting carbonation. Bit too bitter and alcoholic for me.
3.8330ml Bottle - Red/copper in colour. Raisins, leather, vinous fruits and berries in the aroma. Malty and fairly rich taste with fruitcake, toffee, raisins, sultanas and plums.
3.633cl botttle from trade with MonsterMagnet, many thanks! Pours clear reddish brown colour with a mid-sized good lasting tan head. Aroma of smoked and dark roasted malt, some chocolate and coffee. Taste of sweet roasted and peated malt, smoke, bacon, some chocolate.
3.7Bottle at home. Aroma is dark malt, caramel, raisins, hint of sweet dark fruits, dark bread, some brown sugar. Flavour is above medium sweet with a moderate bittersweet finish and some notes of alcohol. Body is nicely full. An excellent heavy Doppelbock.
4.1brown colour, moderate sized creamy beige-ish head; aroma of biscuit, smoke-woody notes, some dried fruitiness and alcohol notes; taste of malty sweetness, smoke notes and spicy alcohol; not a conventional doppelbock, but really good
4.3Bottle, BB 03 2013, large sample. Bottle is aged, but had this beer couple of times before, fresh as well as 1 year old. Definitely needed some age I notifed back then, so on purpose saved this one for a while. Rating this aged bottle now. Dark color, short frothy head. Aroma is a bit dusty, so a bit too much aged perhaps. Plenty of chocolate underneath, some cookie and biscuit. Some extra madeira now. Sticky sweetness from the fresh examole is more gone and balanced into big malty taste, with caramel, toffee and some molasses, but not sweet but malty and even a bit bitter. Velvety texture. Bit cherry and chocolate. Wonderful stuff.
3.5Bottle from Biernavigatie. Dark brown colour, beige foam. Sweet nose of caramel, brown sugar and prunes. Sweet and malty, light bitter finish. Good beer in this style.
3.80.33 l bottle as ’Imperial Doppelbock 2015’ from Mitra Den Bosch, at 11.0% abv and 45 EBU, best before end of 2018. Clear, dark red with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, tan head. Sweet-malty aroma of molasses, brown sugar, some raisins and prunes with notes of alcohol. Sweet, fruity-malty taste of raisins, prunes, molasses and caramel, followed by a medium long, average bitter finish with notes of dark chocolate and coffee. Medium to full body, creamy to oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very tasty stuff, apart from some notes in the aroma no alcohol detectable. However, although it is supposed to be a doppelbock, it may lack some complexity.
3.4Dark, muddy pour. Spices, caramel and a lot of yeast. Special taste, wouldnt say this is a typical bock, but it is something different
3.5Aroma:
Roasted malt, caramel, dried fruits.
Appearance:
Amber/red beer with a average light brown head.
Taste/Palate:
Starts very sweet and gets more fruity and roasted, ends so so fruity.
3.308-10-2015. 33cl bottle at home. Appearance is brown, misty, small lasting head. Aroma is figs, fruit, raisins. Taste is sweet, slight liquorice. Mouthfeel is alcohol, bittersweet finish. Overall not as good as I expected, especially given the 11% ABV.
4.1Drank with Marijn at my place 07-10-2015. A fine beer. First bock beer of the season! Liked it. The beer really grabs you; has a lot of taste and is rich. Very good. One of the best bockbeers.
3.9Fles @Gollem 2. Troebel bruin bier. Wat moutig, verder veel caramel, en chocola. Een echt Emelisse bier, zwaar en zeer smaakvol. Weinig bokbier.
3.8Murky brown with nice soapy tan head. Enticing caramel aromas, molasses, banana bread, booze. The taste has lots of caramel sweetness, overripe banana, earthy and herbal bitterness, warming alcohol. Clean lager yeast presence is noticeable. Fairly full bodied. Very enjoyable doppelbock.
3.3Shared bottle, poured a murky Amber colour with a non lasting tanned head. Lots of yeast. Notes of sweet caramel malts, raisins, spices, slight herbal notes, sticky caramel, slight of metallic taste. Not the best emelisse
3.4From a 330ml bottle on 19/6/2015 (ABV listed as 11%). Pours a slightly cloudy amber with no ead. Has a strong malty nose, with lots of caramel, chocolate and toffee. In the mouth, it’s a really sweet malty monster. Toffee, butterscotch and caramel dominate, but there are also hints of chocolate and prunes. There’s a spicy, slightly sour bitterness providing some punch at the back. Fairly light bodied for such a big beer, with soft carbonation. Not bad, but a bit too sweet and sharp for mine.
3.8Rich chocolate pour a purple brown mix in colour weak head mild carbonation aromas nut chocolate very earthy caramel mild toffee treacle the flavours toffee nut rich chocolate treacle mild honey spice clove cardamom notes good stuff the finish excellent aftertastes lots of earthiness wonderful sweetness some natural flavours a classy Doppelbock
3.8Bottle. Pours a bronze amber color with a creamy-looking tanned head. Vinous and malty aroma with dates, raisins and caramel. Rich light fruity taste, vinous and fairly malty sweet. Full bodied. Softly carbonated.
3.9Bottle, pours dark ruby with an off white head. Malty, chocolate, toffee, juniper berries, pepper, prunes, roast, light peat, liquorice, salt, wood. Big malty base with plenty of interesting notes. Medium sweet, bitter offsets this quite well, full body, slick texture, soft to average carbonation, lingering chocolate bitter and somewhat boozy finish. Very nice
4.0Pours brown with a quickly fading head.
Nose shwos hefty malt, with bready, toasty and almost chocolate-like characters. Loads of melanoidin notes.
Big sweet malty flavours too. Heaps of bready malt, a little booze, some soft spicy hops.
3.633 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ MItra Tiel.
Hazy red brown with a tiny off-white head. Malty aroma with lots of caramel. Taste is less sweet than expected, nice bitterness and some peppery notes. Mouthfeel is round, full and surprisingly smooth for its 11% ABV. very nice extreme doppelbock
3.7Bottled. Hazy reddish amber colour with a small beige head that leaves some lace. Aroma is sweet malts, mild alcohol, caramel, toffee and some mild dry fruits as well as ripe fruitiness to it. Also some nuttiness. Flavour is very similar, with also some mild grainy notes. Good sipper, and actually not too sweet, even though it’s got quite a high abv.
3.333cl bb11/2014. Gist of it: Delicately engineered, ultimately overamped, yet lean German-style Doppelbock with an uneasy conscience of the power and potential of top-fermenting dark ales down South. Nose: dark portwine fruits, stewed maroni, bessenjenever. Taste: more bessenjenever on purified caramel malts amped to eleven, prune jam. Distinct hop fruity bitterness, lingering stone fruit peel and tree bark malt astringency in the finish. Surprisingly lean, medium mouthfeel, Alcohol burn, invisible yeast profile (100% bottom fermented?). Well executed triple winter warmer, straight to the toes after a long walk. The Spinal Tap rendition of their impressively demure Herstbok.
4.0Dark brown with a hazy texture if you look really closely. Tan head. A bit of chocolate and a bit more coffee and smoke.
4.0Bottle 33cl. Dark red brown colour with a beige head that fades quickly. Aroma has yeast, coffee and chocolate. The taste is lovely. The beer feels thick and welcomes you with a soft, sweetness. Chocolate and coffee at first and then the typical emelisse bitterness kicks in. Later there’s warmness from the alcohol. Very good stuff, bring on the winter!
2.4In short: A monstrously sweet orgy of caramel-coated candied dark fruits in a sumptuous body. Not for me.
How: Bottle 330ml, consumed with some age on it, probably over one year of age.
The look: Cloudy dark burgundy body topped by a medium tan head.
In long: Nose is rich as expected, candied fruits and caramel and all… it’s a big doppelbock, no doubt. Body fuller-than-full but with plenty of soft bubbles that create a surprisingly pleasant sumptuous mouthfeel. Taste is an orgy of caramelized dried dark fruits, no use naming the dark fruit flavors I picked up here, with every sip I picked up a few different ones. Also noted maple syrup or maybe it was some kind of not-so-bitter resinous wooden hops finish that tasted like tree sap. Alcohol is apparent but not bothersome. This truly is a digestive beer. Too sweet for me, that was to be expected from a 11% Doppelbock. Not sure why I bought this, a style I don’t really like from a brewery I don’t really like, a winning combination that has as much chances at paying off as playing 6-39-26-B-Chicken-& at the loto.
3.3At Nijmeegse Bierfeesten. Dark brown beer white a beige head. Taste is strong caramel, strong alcohol, coffie.
Now the 2015 bottle, taste a lot less.
More bacon flavor, strong alcohol, more hops, herbs.
