3.9 A black beer, a head is small and light brown. Aroma has liquirice, sweetness of berries and some salt liquirice and meat. Taste has salt liquirice, some roastiness and sourness. Almost full bodied, low carbonation, slightly sticky. Simple and salt liquirice IS, no notes of unique Sorachi Ace. Good.
4.0 33cl bottle, bbe 12/2015. Pours black in color, thin but lasting brown head. Roasted malty aroma, licorice, dark chocolate, tar. Full bodied, dry, roasted malty flavor, licorice, ash, cocoa notes. Flavorful IS, alcohol well hidden, not very sweet either. Can’t find Sorachi here though.
3.8 Bottle. Pours a black body with a dark tanned smallish head. Roasty aroma with coffee and dark chocolate. Taste has similar flavors, liquorice, coffee, leathers and hints of vanilla. Moderate to high roastyness. Lasting bitter finish. Full bodied and softly carbonated.
4.4 330ml bottle from Saveur-Biere.fr. Pours very dark with a light mocha aroma. Taste is bright and full of life. Deep, resonating Imperial stout roasted elements brightened by Sorachi’s unmistakable character adding a touch of creaminess to a slick oily feel. Big, bold and flavoursome.
4.2 Bottled. 30cl sample. The aroma has chocolate, roast, hint of grass and citrus. Black coloured beer with a thin beige/brown head. The taste is medium sweet, has some lasting bitterness, roast, chocolate and fruity tones. Full bodied, bit sticky. Nice one.
4.0 Bottle. The smell of dark chocolate, mocca and coffee, malty. The beige head is foamy with a normal size, the duration is short. The body is black. A strong taste of coffee and malt, quite bitter. The body is very strong and creamy-oily, you can nearly chew it. The carbonation is rather flat.
4.2 Bottle from Brewery Creek; bb 2015-12 Black color, small head. Excellent Imperial Stout, roasty, tarred, moderately sweet, with leather notes; there is also some liquorice flavor, blue cheese aroma, cocoa nibs, light malt sourness; good bitterness level, but not necessarily evidence of Sorachi Ace. Overall, an interesting, excellent beer.
3.7 Pours a large brown creamy head atop an opaque black body. Nose of coffee and ash. Flavour is nice, smooth, with a slight alcoholic burn. Some of the roasted malt melds with a milky coffee ground leaving a tingle on one’s tongue. Purchased at Metro Liquors University Heights for around $7.
4.0 Smallish tan head dark pour has mild to medium carbonation aromas dark chocolate liquorice molasses anise citrus rich fruits smooth coffee the flavours malt chocolate crisp fruit taste rich coffee goodness molasses caramel dark fruits bitter is medium to mild yeast note fruits are superb the finish best aftertastes crisp fruits coffee taste a solid tasting but smooth lovely imperial stout good balance lovely sweetness and bitter notes quality stuff
3.9 Impenetrable black with small mocha head. Leaves a slick film as it swirls around the glass. The expected dark chocolate and coffee aromas, booze, along with tropical fruits (and coconut?) from the sorachi hops. The taste has molasses, dark chocolate, espresso, the tropical fruits, charred meat and the typical sorachi dry finish. Full bodied and sticky. Quite smooth but not quite as smooth as the Makers Mark BA version. Excellent nonetheless.
4.6 Just really black. Lovely begie head that leaves a fine lacing down the glass. Coffee, mild roasted and chocolate in the aroma. Full body. Unbelivable lovely balance between sweetness and bitterness. Soft carbonation and a creamy/oily texture. Coffee, chocolate, herbal, citric and mild roasted flavor. Dangerously well masked alcohol. What a cracy brew. Hard to describe. So complex, tasty, fresh, heavy and yet easy drinkable. Glad I did not taste just 2cl at a beer festival. Pure pleasure! [Bottle from a trade with ★ markextrae ★] Imperial Stout #200
3.6 Pours black with a small head. Nose shows heavy roasted malt, liquorice, soft custard sorachi notes, herbal hops. Full-on flavours, loads of roast, some spicy and piny hops, a little coffee and some hot booze.
3.5 From bottle. Pours dark with good beige head. Aroma dark malts with butter. In taste coffee, chocolate, subtle, fruity note. Full body, proper sweet, smooth.
4.4 33CL bottle at home from Mitra, Maarssen. Body is nearly black, head is medium, creamy, brownish, mostly lasting, excellent lacing. Nose is roasty and citrus, flavor is chocolate mousse, dark roasted coffee, more chocolate, herbs, roasted malt, honey, toast. Medium sweet, heavy roasty bitter. Finish is long lasting dark chocolate roasty bitter, hoppy, medium alcohol warmth. Full body, creamy sticky texture, average carbonation. Excellent dessert beer, very tasty, not that heavy.
4.1 (Bottle) Black colour with dense, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with black coffee, dark chocolate, dried fruit and a touch of tropical fruit. Malty, roasted taste with notes of strong black coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, liquorice, hints of tar, a touch of dried pineapple and citrus (probably the Sorachi Ace addition) and a vinous, warming finish with a generous coffee bitterness and a whiff of alcohol passing by. Full body, quite heavy and oily mouthfeel. Some sweetness coming through. I didn’t expect the hop character to come through this fairly heavy imperial stout, but there is a touch of tropical fruit in all the coffee, chocolate and liquorice. Very nice.
3.7 0,33 l bottle from Biervana chocolate, coffee, roasty, spruce, herbs, black, hazy, frothy, brown foam, light sweetness, very bitter, full body, creamy, thick feel, soft carbonation, bitter, long finish,
4.1 33cl bottle served in a snifter. Pours dark brown with a hint of garnet and a caramel coloured bubbly head. Aroma is hop riven but still fundamentally an imperial stout although it is close to becoming a black IPA when chilled. Mouthfeel is excellent and the taste is buttery smooth and tastes almost barrel aged. Once warmed up the hop present is less present and the heavy imperial stout is left to do its thing. Better than the standard version and not far behind the maker’s mark version.
4.5 33cl bottle at home Appearance: Black with a creamy mocha head. Leaving some lacing. Aroma: chocolate, tropical tones, earthy tones, roasted malts, coffee, red and dark fruit. Taste: A Quite Hoppy stout. Expect roast ed maltand hop bitterness a very cimplex palte with dark b and tropical and citrus fruits and chocolate tones. Cold it’s very black IPA like Warmed up it’s a Stout.. The taste tones move forwards and backkwards depending on the temperature. medium- full body, slightly below average carbonation. creamy texture. Very good and interresting brew. Serious andidate for my best beer of 2015.
4.0 Drank with Rik 26-01-2015 while watching The Hobbit I. This is very well-balanced beer. Quite rich taste. It has to warm up in your mouth, but in the middle the taste really comes to live. Soft start and rich ending. Very drinkable. Nice beer.
3.8 330ml bottle. pours a very dark black/charcoal with a few bubbles that don’t last. aroma is earth, charcoal, molasses, bitter chocolate and dark fruits (dates etc). taste is very nice. full mouth feel. sticky, liquorice, raisins, dates followed by bitter chocolate.
3.9 Bottle from De Hopduvel, Gent, Belgium. Emelisse White Label, Imperial Russian Stout (IRS) is amazing. Hop is amazing with blonde beer but hop is not that good with IRS :-)
4.0 33cl bottle bb09/2015, courtesy of/traded with tderoeck i believe. Unctuous deep brown, beige, indentured crema. Exotic dessert aroma of caramelised berries (gooseberry particularly), crème brûlée, milk chocolate, green forest twigs. Taste adds roast, white grapes, more chocolate, white dessert wine (Gewürztraminer), cough drops. Sorachi Ace sends this off into manifold culinary directions, making it a hard-to-gauge one-off ImpStout.
3.7 33cl bottle at home. Best before dec. 15. Wild carbonated Black pour with a Brown shade. And a creamy mocha head. Sweet milky bakers chocolate in the front, tropical fruit nose of the sorachi, dark coffee beans, some deep dried red fruits, roasted malts, caramel, quite hop forward, bit strange to get a strong hop bitterness and citrus notes, first i had the feeling i was drinking a Black ipa. But it gets a lot better as it warms!
3.8 September 21, 2014. Bottle, 2012 vintage. Pours black with a dense tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, ash, light hoppy notes. Taste is light to medium sweet, medium bitter finish with chocolate and ash. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation.
4.0 Bottle at home . Pours black . Small to good, thick , darker head . Smell is Very much sorachi, undertone of roastyness . Thick and creamy ! Taste is biter, green in a spicy way . Sorachi is def still there ( BBE december 15 , guessing 2 years , would mean 10 months old now ) . The hops kinda collapse with the IMPY taste , but at the aftertaste , they blend in completely perfect, The beer really builds op from a so-so smell, to a good taste, to a very ncie aftertaste . Carbo and mouthfeel are perfect ( low carbo , creamy mouthfeel ) A beer that is hard for me to rate ...
4.0 Bottle, bb 12-2015. Pours black and tan. Aroma: mint, lemon grass, roast, vanilla Taste: roast, chocolate, citrus, mint, liquorice, ginger Medium sweet and bitter, medium bodied, sticky mouthfeel, soft carbonation, long bitter chocolate mint finish. A stout with a twist.
