Engelszell Benno Trappistenbier

Engelszell Benno Trappistenbier

With an intense red shimmer, the Engelszell Benno reminds of a sunny autumn day in the Danube valley. The fine perlage forms a compact foam, which releases complex, spicy-grassy hop aromas. After a light sip, the Alsatian hops of the Strisselspalt variety present their full strength and spice. Carried by pleasant malt aromas, this Trappist beer rounds with an intense, harmonious bitterness.

Ingredients: Water, barley malt, honey, Strisselspalt hops, yeast.

3.3 Fles. Lichtbruin schuim. Geur zoetig, metaal. Bruist in mond. Iets waterig. Goed bitter-droge afdronk.
3.7 Bottle. Brown pour, modest head. Apple and raisin, gentle sweetness, good if not exceptional.
4.1 This is a nice I would say dubbel. Quite boozer given its only coming at 6.9% abv which is quite tame for a trappiste. Fruity and malty. A good beer one i would buy again.
3.5 Mørk gyldenbrun. Klar. Høyt luftig skum som daler sakte. Søt krydderaroma. Myk munnfølelse. Smaken mest mandler. Spor av frukt. Litt karamell i ettersmaken.
3.9 Brown with a small head.Medium but quite aggressive body.Nice herb like flavour that stands out for me. Exceeded my expectations and is one I would recommend.
3.0 0.33 l bottle from Alko Ympyrätalo, Helsinki. Amber, clear, no head. Taste has raisins and dry ending. Quite OK.
3.3 Poured a light copper amber with an off white lace top. The aroma is predominantly malty but with yeast notes amidst the spiced bread and brown sugar. The taste is medium sweet even if it lacks the complexity that it claims. Some caramel malt and spiced fruit and a yeasty finish that possibly limits the bitterness. Palate is medium, smooth texture, fine carbonation and a slightly dusty finish that leaves a fuller mouth coating. I have tasted relatively few Austrian beers and embarrassingly few Belgian ones so this Trappist may well advise me to go home.
3.2 17-May-13 (330-ml bottle, Bottled March 2013: Purchased 17-May-13 for $7.49 at The Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in San Diego, CA) This beer pours hazy and dark-amber into the glass, with an inch of pale-tan head settling to a thin blanket. The nose shows moderately sweet, toast malty, black olive, white pepper, cut grass, and a fair amount of cheesy funk. On the palate, this beer is surprisingly hoppy and bitter, with flavors of cut grass, fresh herbs, white pepper, and grapefruit pith. Malts are dry and cereal in nature, with a hint of caramel. Light-medium in weight, medium-plus in carbonation, dry on the palate, easy to drink. Overall, this is a decent beer, but the hops are a bit too forward for what I expect from a Belgian ale. This is the type of Belgian ale I'd expect an American brewery to make.
3.2 This is a backlog rating from 2013 from a bottle shared by Tmoney99, from notes. When I had this beer it was average to below average for the style and not something I wanted to have again or I just didn't get back to my notes because of my technology at the time, work and/or family. Words to describe this beer are dark fruit, sweet malts, mild bitterness, yeast, average.
3.3 Pullo @ Alko.
3.7 Pours a clear red with a good sticky white head. Aroma is sweet, honey, malts, caramel, bread, spice, fresh hops, candy. Taste is smooth, honey, caramel, and sweet malts carry through with hints of hops and spice. Very good Belgian ale.
3.5 Caramel chocolate malt aroma. Deep brown colour brown colour poor head and lacing. Malt caramel chocolate biscuit flavour. Smooth palate.
3.4 Purvis Cellars bottle (20-Oct-19) Sweet candy malt aroma. Dark amber brown colour, ok head and suds lacing. Sweet malt candy spice flavour. Tangy bitter candy finish and candy malt spice aftertaste.
3.6 Bevuta in bottiglia. Birra trappista ambrata. Non aromi particolari, ma molto buona. Leggero gusto di miele.
3.8 33 cl at home in trappist glass@approx. 10 degrees C. This beer pours a reddish, dark amber with a light tan head and more depot than I have seen in a beer for ages...perhaps ever!.The aroma is very light with primary notes of bread. The taste is somewhat sweet and warm with just a touch of yeast. A bit like Christmas cake - the bread, the brown sugar and the raisins. This is especially prominent in the finish which also holds a little spizyness. The bottle was about a year past sell by date (the way I like these beers) but by no means over the top though this may account for the abundance of depot.
3.3 Pours clear, dark amber with a full, light tan head. Aroma is light dried fruit and Belgian yeast. Taste is raisin and candy sugar, moving to roast, light nutmeg and Belgian yeast. Finish is raisin and Belgian yeast.
3.6 Dark amber appearance with a frothy head. Smell of pines, flowers and stone fruit. Easy drinking sweet taste with a bitter aftertaste. Low carbonation.
3.5 Light aroma. Regular Belgian beer.
2.3 May 2019. 330ml dark bottle, unfiltered, from BeerWulf. Doesn't quite hold together for me, and is nowhere near as splendid as the Quad from this brewery. Too much crystal malt gives a damp slightly bitter/tannic taste. The hops add to the misery. There is some barley sugar and a smidgen of toffee for the plus points, but not enough to save the turgid mess.
3.8 Bottle. Nice reddish, brownish amber color with a two finger, off white head. Aroma is grains with whiffs of fruit. Taste is well balanced with slight fruit up front, grains in the middle with a well balanced finish leaning to the hoppy side.
3.8 330 ml bottle, at Cafe Chic Oldschool, Hjørring. Served in Rochefort glass. Nearly red colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of ripe yellow fruits, some spicy yeast. Malty, spicy and fruity flavour, moderate hops. Good beer.
3.5 Dark orange, close to amber, color, middle foam size. The aroma and the taste are pretty pleasure.
Retrogusto quasi assente. Sorso con frizzantezza elevata e corpo blando.
3.5 Rood bruin bier met grote witte schuimkraag. Zeer zacht , geen Bitterheid, niet te zoet. Redelijk vlak.
