Epic Son of a Baptist

Epic Son of a Baptist

Son of a Baptist is an 8% ABV imperial stout. It is not barrel aged like its father, Big Bad Baptist; instead its flavor profile was designed to highlight the complex and often unique flavors of small batch coffees. Instead of sourcing a coffee that would play well in a beer we sought out creative and innovative roasters, then asked them which beans they’re passionate about. Each resulting release of Son of a Baptist is widely different depending on the coffee selected. Some are fruity and sweet with notes of jam and chocolate, others are rich and earthy with a big roasted finish. Each limited release will return to the Roaster’s home market where the beer and the coffee can be sampled side by side.

4.1 Not possible to match the Batch on the can with a specific coffee producer. There's no longer a Batch Register available from Epic. This one is black and oily with quick fading head. Aroma and flavour really deliver on the coffee element as expected. Bittersweet. Some liquorice notes and brown sugar come through. Silky and rich.
Evengoed erg lekker.
4.1 Nitro snifter on tap at Incline Public House. Nice coffee in the nose, espresso, light cocoa. Big coffee in the flavor, along with mild roast imperial stout malt notes. Light to moderate sweet, moderate bitter, great long coffee aftertaste. Medium to bigger body, awesome nitro creaminess and chewy stout texture, not slick nor syrupy. Very satisfying coffee stout. Nice with my CBR pizza. Easy to sip and so flavorful.
3.9 Poured from 12 oz. can. Opaque, brown-black with a 1-finger brown head and fair lacing. Aroma of roast coffee, roasted malt, chocolate and dark fruit. Taste of roast coffee, roasted malt, dark berries and chocolate. Medium/full body and medium/low carbonation.
4.5 Dark chocolate. Roasted malts. Coffeeish. Cocoa. Mocha. Abit of hazelnut. Full bodied. Creamy mouthfeel. Alcohol very well masked. Tasty!
4.2 Can. Label says look under the Can to see which roaster is featured, and you look under the Can and nothing is there. Very dark pour. Black. Brown bubbly head. Dark aroma, roast and malt. Dark chocolate. Some sweet fruit. Coffee ground. Flavor is dark malt, roast, bitter chocolate, coffee ground. Light sweetness, moderate bitterness. Very nice.
4.0 12 fl.oz. can. A very dark brown beer with a beige to tan head. Aroma of sweet dark roasted malt, sweet malt, full of coffee and some chocolate. Taste of intense sweet dark malt, coffee, vanilla, cookies, chocolate.
3.7 Can 355ml @ home Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, lots of coffee, chocolate and hint of cocoa. Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with a long smooth, coffee, roasted and chocolate finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Coffee type not specified on can.
3.6 Poured very dark ruby from the can with a mocha head that was moderately lasting. Of course, deep sweet dark chocolate with a moderating coffee flavor filling in the malt spaces. Hops are herbal, but just barely noticeable, showing great balance with the malt. Alcohol level is noticeable/tasteable. A good result for a coffee/stout mesh. Not clear from the can bottom as to which coffee was used.
4.0 Epic Son of a Baptist Stout - Imperial Flavored / Pastry 848416 Lukt: Kaffe, bek, lakris, sjokolade, vanilje. Utseende: Sort. Skum/kullsyre: Dekkende skum, heng. Smak: Kaffe, røsta malt, karamell, lakris, sjokolade, vanilje. Hvor: Tasting kveld Bryne. Medium: Boks@330ml, ABV@8%, Når@13.03.2021.
3.6 355 ml can, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. Source of coffee is not specified. ABV is 8.0%. Pitch black colour, moderate to small tan head. Aroma of coffee, roast malts and cocoa. The flavour is not too sweet, but has distinct notes of the same elements as the aroma. Moderate hops.
4.6 Can. Pitch black body under a nice, stable tan head. Strong aroma dominated by coffee, really nice coffee and some smooth roasted malt in the background. Taste in the same direction, this is a stout for coffee lovers, not complex in the direction of lots of exiting flavors, the coffee runs the show here. The best part of this beer is the way the coffee is presented, not too bitter or intense just exactly perfect with the malt filling in where necessary to still get a feeling of drinking a beer. Perfect body as well and long lasting aftertaste with exactly the same coffee/malt flavor. So nice.
4.2 Very black pour, hint if light at the bottom, solid mocha head trailing mocha lace. Nose roasty malt and coffee. Middle is coffee, bakers chocolate, dried fruit, blackened malt, leather, treacle. Finish is earthy mocha with a touch of sweetness. ABV is whispering, powerful beer.
3.7 12 oz. can from Safeway. The can had 'B.B.' on the bottom, but I couldn't find any details on that coffee. Pours black, with a medium, rocky, brown head. The nose is espresso, dark chocolate, bitter walnut, and cranberry. Sweet and roasty, with a mild bitterness. Medium to heavy body, with a challky, lightly acidic palate. This is a quality stout.
3.0 Nice light foamy head, smell is yeasty and roasted malt ..taste is roasted malt with a dry finish...some complexity and lactose but I'd prefer a bit of a sweeter finish...had in Florida with Aunt Barbara after Thanksgiving dinner 2020 (went to Abe & louie's)
4.0 Can, WW, batch 7316, no clue what coffee was used (though it claims the bottom of the can will tell me). Thick and black, small brown head. Roasted coffee, rich chocolates, cream nose. Roasted coffee, malt, green leaf, earth, cocoa. Really nice.
Ruikt koffie, bitter. Smaakt koffie, gebrand. Beetje scherp.
3.8 Can at Antica Forma in Moab. Black with a thin tan head. Aroma of coffee, nuts, and chocolate ice cream. Tastes medium sweet and toasty. Medium bodied with a touch of fizz.
4.2 Can from Black Dog Beer Shop in Vienna, VA Aroma: coffee, chocolate, roasty Appearance: dark brown with a tan head Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness Mouthfeel: average carbonation, medium body, creamy feel, long finish Tasty
3.9 It pours black with a dark brown head with smell beading. Head retention is very good. It has strong coffee and roast aromas. There are very low background notes of cocoa and a hint of burnt elements. It has strong coffee flavors with some roast and background chocolate in support. There are some cocoa elements There are some slightly burnt elements. It is also fairly clean. It has a smooth and sickly feet on the palate. Overall, it has strong flavors that are very distinguished with the exception of the burnt elements with are only a slight flavor.
3.8 On tap at Big Texas Beer Fest. Pours a dark brown with medium beige head. The aroma is roast coffee, cocoa, dark fruits. Slick body, roasted malt, dark chocolate, light booze finish, very good.
3.3 Pitch black pour with a thin tan head. Aroma is pretty much only coffee, used coffee grounds. Very hidden some dark chocolate, roasted malts and toffee are peaking through. Over medium bitter and softly sweet. Halfway medium body with soft fizz. A bit too thin for my likings and for this genre if you ask me. Not bad but had many many better in this style.
3.9 Black with a lasting off-white head. Roasted aroma with loads of coffee, dark chocolate and vanilla. Sweet roasted flavour with chocolate and coffee. Quite bitter finish. Intense.
3.9 Can @ Scheffel and Thomas A share. Oluf B share. Pours Black with a small creamy head. Good coffee. Slick and vinous. Roasted with notes of ash and charcoal. Enjoyable really.
