Beer Stories

Mad Anthony’s APA is named for General Anthony Wayne, Brigadier General of the American Revolutionary War. It is rumored that during the war, General Wayne was shot numerous times and that his “madness” can be attributed to lead poisoning caused by the lead filled bullets which entered his body. He died in 1796, and was buried in Erie only to be dug up years later by his angry son, upset that his father had not been buried in the family plot. Driving Mad Anthony’s remains back to St. David’s Churchyard, his son drove so fast, causing many of the General’s bones to fall out of the wagon and be strewn across various parts of Pennsylvania!

3.4 Transfer from BA review on 10-31-12- Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance – Pours a lightly hazed golden color with a half finger white head. The head fades fast to give light lacing and a spotty foam on the top of the brew. Smell – The aroma is bready with some sweeter tropical fruit aromas of tangerine and mango as well as some peach smell. Overall it is bready and sweet. Quite nice. Taste – The taste begins very differently then would have been anticipated from the nose. While there is plenty of fruit aromas in the nose there are almost none in the tongue and in fact after the initial taste, which contains a light sweetness, the brew is rather dry. It begins with strong flavors of a bready nature. Soon some lighter hop flavors come to the tongue. These are largely of an earthy nature, but also contain some flavors of a herbal nature as well. These hop flavors grow stronger and more bitter as the taste advances to the end, leaving a rather dry and bitter flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The beer is on the thinner and crisper side with a carbonation level that is just above average, with both being rather nice for the drier and bitter flavors of the brew. Overall – A fairly decent APA. The nose deceived me quite a bit however as I was expecting (and kind of hoping for as the nose smelled quite nice) something with a bit more sweetness. It was a little bit unbalanced with its bitter hop and bready taste without much sweet. Even with this said, it was alright and rather easy drinking beer.
3.0 Bottle. Bronzed hue, still and shiny, thin head. Slightly musty aroma, with malt as the predominate component. Drinks pretty much middle of the road all the way ... light metallic, malty edge up front, with just a light citric/woody component. (#5569, 7/4/2014)
4.3 Aroma is malty with a hop background Flavor is slightly sweet, malty, biscuity and crisp with citrus hop flavor. More malty than bitter.
3.2 Session beer. Lighter than IPA. Malty start and nice finish. Good drinking beer. ---all in good suds.
2.7 Pale amber body, thin off-white head, sparse lacing. Malt forward body--showing light biscuit and grain, a touch of floral and citric hops. Medium bodied, light sweetness, moderate carbonation. Simple. Ok.
3.3 Nice ale a little malty with a hop kick
2.9 FROM NOTES: August 27, ’12. From a 12 ounce bottle into a shaker pint. A: Not very complex, pale malts are about all I’m getting from this. A: Pours a nice dark copper color with a decent head that fades slowly to good lacing. T: The flavor is simple with faint sweetness and some dry earthy bitterness. P: Light body, high carbonation. O: Not a bad APA by any means but there’s nothing particularly interesting about it.
2.6 Bottle->shaker. Cloudy copper with small white head. Faint malt and citrus, slightly bittersweet. Thin.
2.9 12oz bottle - pours pale gold with white head and thin lacing. Nose is grassy. Sip adds floral notes and light breadiness. mildly bitter. medium body with a light citrus aftertaste. Not good for the style.
2.6 This is a pale? There are hops in this beer? Aroma is sweet malt. Pour is cloudy copper w/ a thin white head & some ok lacing. Thin is the theme here - especially in the taste. Tremendously watered d
2.7 12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured hazy orange with a minimal white head that goes away quickly. Aroma, faint notes of malts, caramel and fruit. Taste is quite sweet and malty, combined with some fruit and a very slight hop bitterness. Drinkable but that’s pretty much it.
2.5 Clear light amber with a fluffy white head, tiny streaks of lace. Taste is malt with a light dose of floral hops midway through . The finish turns slightly sour, which is a negative. When gulped, this brew is quite drinkable; when sipped, it loses balance.
2.9 16oz draft 7/25/13 (Erie Sea Wolves Game-Erie)-Pours an amber with a small head. Aroma of of earth, hops, and malt. Taste of the same. This medium bodied brew was not too shabby.
3.0 12oz bottle. Pours a hazy copper color with a finger of white head. Aroma of piney hops, a bit of citrus, and notes of caramel and toasted malt. Taste is sweet caramel and toasted malt, some grapefruit, and finishes malty with moderate floral hop bitterness.
3.2 Ok. Slightly hazy orange brown pour with weak white head. Aroma of caramel malt. Taste slight sweet with mild bitter. Could drink this like water while mowing the lawn.
3.2 12oz bottle, from Party Source. Mostly clear orange - yellow color. Thin off-white bubbly head. Caramel malt aroma. Decent lace. Thin bit of head retains. Medium body. Smooth, crisp, lighter carbonation. No lingering stickiness. Some grassy hop. Sweeter taste, light bitter. Decent American pale ale.
2.6 I liked the label, and that’s where things begin to fall. The taste was average, I expected a bit more flavor. Don’t get me wrong it’s not a bad beer at all, it’s just it didn’t stand out any more than any other domestic beer for being an APA other than a higher alcohol content. Worth a try, just don’t buy a case.
4.0 Bottle. Orange caramel malt, grass and orange peel aroma. Golden yellow with small head. Moderately sweet orange, caramel malt, and mildly bitter fresh grass/orange peel flavor. Nice body. Great balance. Love the hops in this one - excellent.
2.8 Light golden clear ale with a white head. Soft flavors at first and then a bit if lime and citrus. Aftertaste is a bit of bitterness. Overall a decent apa
