Erie Brewing Ol' Red Cease & Desist Scottish Ale

Erie Brewing Ol' Red Cease & Desist Scottish Ale

Wee Heavy Ale: Powerful caramel malt flavor, finishing climatically with a smooth warming sensation. Deep Red. 19.9°

Erie Brewing Company presents the beer previously know as “Red Ryder BIG Beer.” Red Ryder was dubiously awarded two “cease and desist” orders for its name. So with its unique new name (inspired by the long arm of the law), Ol’ Red Cease and Desist brings more to the table than just a big, malty flavor and climaxing warm sensation, it brings a legal record!

3.4 12oz bottle, thanks to Micah W. Some bigger tropical fruit and creme aroma. Clear red color. Thin ring of khaki head, a loose bit of lace or two. Bigger body. Pretty smooth, soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Bigger bitter taste, light sweet, light bite to it. Decent scotch ale. Good for the bigger ABV. Gets more enjoyable as I go. A bit smoother, a bit creamier as the carbonation dies down (though never truly creamy at any point).
2.9 Just had the railbender so not sure what I’m going to get from this besides probably subpar. Pours a much darker than the railbender. It’s more clear dark brown amber. Smell is sweet caramel malts, with just a tinge of sweet fruits and a touch of a sour garbage note. Taste is a malt overdrive. Sweet, caramel, a bit fruity. Decent mouthfeel. Booze shows a bit. Not much better than its little bro.
3.5 12 oz. Clear reddish-copper with a lasting film of cream. Nose of earthy toffee and light booze. Tastes of toasted grain, darkish caramel, raisin, and hints of sour apple. Touches of dry cocoa and peat develop later. Medium-heavy body is sweetish per the style, but finishes nicely balanced by the earthy peat and a touch of roast. A smooth, average level of carbonation and a touch of alcohol warmth make for a decent cold weather sipper.
3.0 bottle. syrupy dark red with no head. sweet, dextrinous aroma with almost a woody barrel character and plenty of unfermentable crystal malt. thick body. flavors of caramel mostly. i’m pretty sure none of the abv claims are correct from this brewery. there is no possible way this 10%. same with the other beers i’ve had.
3.6 12 oz bottle from the four kind sampler case. Some serious shortcomings in taste and gravity make this a shadow of a true Scottish ale. Not quite sweet enough with very little caramel taste. Disappointment overall.
3.2 12 oz bottle served in a Piraat snifter. Appearance – Pours a mahogany color with a small and short-lived off-white head. The head left only a sparse spots of lacing. Smell – Lightly sweet and moderately boozy. Some notes of baked bread and fruits, with a touch of peat smoke. Taste – Starts quite sweet with caramel, caramelized sugar, and some breadiness. Some smoke works into the taste, becoming peaty in the finish. A boozy, beer liqueur character. Mouthfeel – Medium+ body; low carbonation; moderate alcohol harshness and warmth. Overall – More boozy then desirable, even for 10% ABV. Relatively fruity as if a somewhat Belgian version of the style.
3.4 Bottle pours dark amber with tan head. Aroma is nutty with sweet caramel and fruity yeast. Flavor is toasted malts with caramel and dark fruits.
2.6 Bottle. Amber, copper in color. Not much head. Taste is strong alcohol, with caramel, no hops. Aroma is alcohol, caramel, candy corn.
2.6 Appearance: Deep mahogany and burnt ruby under a meager head that fades into a flimsy film. Swirls with nothing special. Nose: Malty sweet and spicy and boozy in the back. Burnt caramelized candy apple skins. Plums. Burnt toffee. Tootsie rolls and hard black cherry candies. Caramel candy nougat. Palate: Much thinner than expected with the majority of the flavor in the middle. A fast finish leaves little to reminisce over. Tootsie rolls and black cherry hard candies in the middle. Slightly dry parched finish of plum and apple skins. Root beer in the back of the swallow. Spice and heat underneath. Weird old brittle wood and sawdust in the breath. Final Thoughts: Nothing to write home about here. Erie has yet to impress and the Ol Red left me wanting to cease and desist immediately…which I did. 2.3 A bit like chewing on a band-aid. The palate was disgracefully watery for a wee heavy. Usually such a high alcohol content warms me up to most beers, but it didn’t work with this one!
2.8 Wow, this was sweet. Lots of caramel and molasses, hardly any hops. It didn’t really smell that great - more of a stale bread aroma. To be honest, I ended up dumping most of it. Not because it was bad (It wasn’t good, but I have finished much worse), but because I didn’t want to choke down a 10% beer when I could drink two 5% beers that I enjoy...
3.5 Clear and copper in color with minimal head. Aroma is all toffee and caramel. Taste is toffee with alcohol heat coming through on the finish. Not my favorite style but a good beer that I’d drink again.
3.2 355mL from Grassroots Market is Jax, Fl. Thanks drowland for the gift card! Pours with no head, low carbonation. Clear reddish amber, deep. Nose is dark cherry, sweet alcohol, licorice mild. Taste is sugary, mild paper. Weaker finish for abv.
3.1 , A vary good beer from a novice, copper color, nice aroma, not a vary strong taste kind of thin, overall i would drink it again.
2.9 Pours cloudy brown with a fleeting off-white head. Very light toffee aroma. The flavor is light honey, caramel and toast. Light bodied. This needs more malt flavor.
3.2 Red ale with a white head. Bold and strong on the nose which is slightly still hot. The ABV is 10.1 yet it is really well blended into the beer. The overall is quite nice.
3.3 Clear reddish-brown with a tiny off-white head. Aroma of toast and caramel. Taste is moderately sweet and full of caramel flavor. Medium bodied and slightly syrupy.
3.4 Bottle thanks to Justin. Poured a one finger head with a nice mahogany color. Pretty decent aromas of caramel, toffee, honey, butterscotch, alcohol grain. Lighter texture but still has a big beer feel. Medium light bitterness. Slight metallic taste. One of the better ones I’ve had from Erie.
3.6 Very smooth and alcohol was well hidden. Malt blend was very good along with bittering hops.
3.1 Bottle. Crimson amber pour with minimal head. Caramel sweetness, bread, and some dark fruit. ABV pretty well hidden.
3.4 Had on draft @ Zeno’s Pub, in State College, PA, USA .. i was the only person there .. . leather .. deep sweet tart molasses .. quite tart really .. scotch eyes..
3.6 Bottle. Deep copper color, slightly cloudy. Strong malty, slight;y fruity aroma. Strong malty, slightly roasty and yeasty flavor. Good.
3.1 Taken from old notes. Dark orange pour with a nose of sweet malts and caramel. Bitter to go along with the sweet malts. Sweetish aftertaste. 10.1% is very well hidden.
3.0 On tap. Pours a deep amber with a thin, quickly vanishing head. aroma is malted caramel and fruit. Taste is somewhat vegetable-esque with dry sour fruit. Mouth feel is carbonated and then slightly dry.
3.3 Tap at oblivion. Aromas of light cherries, smoke and roast, some booze, and caramel. Taste is similar with a noticeable roasted character coming through. An interesting offering.
3.3 Suggested to me @ my waitress’ request. The aroma was of lightly charred cherries, honey and hops. The taste was pretty boozy and sweet with what seemed to be a hint of dry oak. Undertones of hops, spices and alcohol make for a well-rounded beer. Cheers!
3.3 Pours a dark copper brown color on tap with slight tan head that dissipates quickly and little to no lacing. Aroma of roasted and smoked malts, a touch of sweetness, and a bit of metallic notes. Taste follows suit, but the smokiness really jumps out in the beginning. Nice beer, and the alcohol is well hidden for 10%
3.2 Pours a clear red with minimal head. Smells a little smoky, coffee, nuts. Taste is bitter with a moderate sweetness, relatively smooth, a little metallic though.
3.6 from notes. easy drinking strong ale. lack of smoky character detracts from this one. Very malty. thick, sweet Butterscotch finish. Very decent.
3.4 Bottle 12fl.oz. Light unclear medium amber orange colour with a average, frothy - fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, fruity, oxidide. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20120419]
