Ettaler Curator Doppelbock

Ettaler Curator Doppelbock

The nose is filled with complex notes of figs, fruitcake, port, licorice, cherry, raisin chocolate, black toffee, coffee and caramel, while it tastes deliciously thick and chewy, with great complexity showing notes of fruits, coffee-roastiness, molasses, licorice, and toffee. This beer is a meal!
Editor's note. The draught version is 9% abv, but also contained under this listing. Edit #2 The bottles are now 9% as well (from 7%)

3.4 500ml brown bottle from Capital Market in Salem OR. $4.49 Pours a clear bodies dark brown colour with a nice thick and frothy beige head. Roasty /toasty malts..marbled rye bread comes to mind somehow..demerara sugar and spicy hops. Nice. Taste similar but a bit sweeter..some brambles and figs going on in the sweetness. little too hot. Mouth feel is weak to be honest..carbonation really low which lets the sweeetness become cloying and the alcohol show. Started off good..but this is not a top class d-bock by any means
3.2 Bottle from Hop Burns & Black. It pours dark mahogany brown with a foamy off-white head. The sweet and rich maltage, malt loaf, dried fruits, fruit cake, toasty, doughy brown bread, cookie dough, liquorice, earth and cereal. The taste is pretty sweet upfront, sticky, toothy, malt bomb, malt loaf, dried fruits, fruit cake, molasses, toasty brown sugar, liquorice allsorts and a touch of booze with a toothy, malty finish. Medium-fulsome body and fine, foamy carbonation. A big ole sweet maly bomb. Not bad.
3.2 "Ettaler Curator", 7 %, Fläschchen von der Grünen Woche, Berlin. - Tiefdunkles Kupfergoldbraun, klar. - Runder, tief malziger, dennoch fast leicht wirkender Doppelbock. Schön. (25.1.2020.)
3.8 33 cL bottle, bought at the Ettal Klosterladen. Pours a dark, clear, brown color, with a small, bubbly, tan head. The aroma is cherry wood, light tobacco, maple, butter toffee, and cocoa. Syrupy sweet, with a touch of bitterness. Medium body, with a syrupy, sticky, clean palate. This is a delicious and malty bock.
3.6 Draught @ Ginger Man - NYC. Clear brown with faint reddish tint, small foamy beige head, fruity-berry caramel aroma, medium carbonation, medium bitter fruity caramel taste, thin body, long bitter caramel finish. Very well balanced.
3.8 Brown pour with a red hue. Sweeter than the others in the tasting, with more raisin and just a bit less roast and chocolate and a touch more caramel like malts. Still nice overall, even if it was 4th of 6.
4.3 Many thanks for this complex Bock beer to Mariusz. Piana srednia, malo trwala, wyglad brazowa barwa, pod swiatlem czerwona niczym bycza krew. W smaku rozpuszczone landrynki, likier owocowy, troche delikatnej kawy i przede wszystkim wisnie w czekoladzie, podbite alkoholowa nuta, niczym Mon Cherry. Zlozone wyraziste, w sam raz na chlodne jesienne wieczory po kolacji
3.7 500ml bottle. Pours a clear red-copper with a thin, creamy, short lived, tan head that leaves spotty lacing. Sweet aroma of toasted bready malt, caramel, fig, raisin, date and cherry. Sweet flavour of toasted bready malt, caramel, licorice, raisin, fig, date, plum, molasses, cherry, red wine and dark chocolate in a dry, alcohol warming finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Excellent. Tasty and complex.
3.7 500 ml bottle from Two Angels Liquors, vintage 2009. Deep reddish brown and clear appearance with a small, fully dissipating tan head. Complex aroma of chocolate malt, dark fruit, caramel/toffee, port wine, mild black licorice and light molasses. Similar flavor, rich, malty, complex and moderately sweet with hints of oxidation. Medium body with soft carbonation, a smooth feel and a pleasant finish. Pretty nice overall.
3.7 Dunkelbraun verspricht das Ganze etwas schokoladig-karamelliges. Versprechen gehalten. Dazu Röstmalze, etwas Toffee und ein Schuss Kaffee. Schwer, leicht alkoholisch, blumiger, vollmundiger Abgang. Toll.
3.8 Flasche 0,5l: Dunkles Mahagoni, Kastanienbraun, glasklar, flüchtiger mittelporiger Schaum; in der Nase würzige dunkle Süße, Malz, kräftig Malzzucker, dunkle Fruchtigkeit, eingelegte/getrocknete Früchte, Feigen, Backpflaumen, Röstaromen, dunkle Schokolade, leichte Tannine, Vanille; im Körper kräftige dunkle Süße, Röstmalz, Malzzucker, dunkle Fruchtigkeit, eingelegte/getrocknete Früchte, Backpflaumen, Röstaromen, cremig, kräftige Kohlensäure, dezente Hopfennoten, angenehme fruchtig-würzige Bitterkeit, etwas Kaffee, Vanille, dunkles Karamell; angenehmer fruchtig-würziger Nachgang mit deutlichen Röstaromen
3.6 Bottle at Trenaglos, 02/01/17. Ruby with a dense bone-coloured bonce. Fine herbal and coniferous hop notes emerging amidst a slew of soft prune, honey and fig. That soft malt rich molasses and preserved stone fruit taste awash with subtle richness, discreetly backed with herbal and honeyed cherry blossom hop. Hints of milk chocolate, raisin and rust. Possibly a saline hint too. Instantly Germanic. Very fine nightcap sipping.
3.8 Heavy on the dark fruit, both in the nose and the taste. Appearance is a light orange tinged brown, with sparse spotty lace. Palate is syrupy, sweet, but with wood, caramel, licorice undertones. very good, in the classic style, true to style.
3.8 From a 500 ml bottle. Pours a clear dark mahogany with an ecru head. Aroma of caramel and toffee. Flavors are sweet caramel. Smooth and delicious.
3.7 500ml Bottle - Very dark brown with some red tinges. Raisins, chocolate, plums and some roasted notes in the aroma. Malty and fairly fruity taste with raisins, blackcurrant and chocolate detected. A fairly rich yet easy to drink doppelbock.
3.4 Halve liter, 7% alcohol volgens het etiket. Donker bruinrood. Ruikt romig, kan niks duidelijk benoemen, smaak is caramel, rozijnig, medium zoet. OK.
3.7 Zapach: słodki, paloność, owoce. Wygląd: ciemnobrązowy, klarowne, piana beżowa, niska. Smak: słodowy, słodkie, alkohol wyczuwalny, do tego orzechy, trochę czekolady, kawy.
4.5 This is about as close to what I imagine the ur-doppelbock should be as I can imagine. Thick and sweet. Mostly dark fruit, but has a nice amount of anise character, some molasses and coffee. Very sweet. Tried for the first time back in 2007.
4.1 Pours dark amber with light, rich head that leaves lacing. Aroma is dried fruit, roast and caramel. Taste is sweet plum, caramel, moving to roast and a hint of coffee and some smokiness. Finish is smooth and sweet. A really excellent doppelbock.
2.8 500 ml bottle. Pours dark brown, almost no head. Nuts, grapes, bourbon/liquor, toffee, roasted malt. Malty sweetness and some bitterness. Boozy alcoholic. Full body. Flat carbonated, oily texture. Bad carbonation ruins this beer, maybe a bad bottle...
4.9 I will leave the descriptions to others. When ever I’m in Germany I stop by the cloister and pick up a dozen bottles. 1.5 Euro a bottle. The best beer ever.
4.4 A wonderful full flavored malty beer. Great body and very smooth mouthfeel. Tastes almost as good here as at the monastery in Germany. Prost!
3.8 1 pint, 9 oz. bottle. Pour was dark brown/red, off white head. Aroma of dark fruit, malty, raisin. Taste was mild sweet, malty, caramel, nut.
Generalnie całkiem fajne piwo, bogaty smak i aromat
3.9 500 ml bottle. Copper color with a brief creamy beige head. Roasted malt nose has notes of caramel, figs, dark dried fruit and syrup. Flavor mirrors nose with additional notes of light chocolate and cane syrup. Chewy mouthfeel. Cloying sweet malty finish and aftertaste.
3.0 Not my favorite style. Aroma of figs and caramel, flavor much the same. Large bottle poured into a tulip, twice... very flat indeed. Deep brown color, medium oily body. Sort of like lightly carbonated prune juice. Couldn’t take more than one of these sweet treats and had a hard time finishing the bottle. This brew is the opposite of complex and it’s rather disappointing.
3.5 Dark red with little brown head. Aroma is brown sugar, grapes, butter, some nuts. Taste is buttery and flat, a bit sweetness and roast bitterness. Thinbody. Hm.
3.7 Tap, the 7% version. Dark ruby color with beige head. Aroma is fruity, molasses, earthy. Taste is molasses, prunes, earthy. Rather sweet. A heavy and typical Bock, rather heavy.
4.0 Draught at BKL München 2017. Dark copper body, with a medium, creamy, lacing, beige head. Aroma of caramel, dried fruits, cocoa, some toast. Tastes quite similar, but fuller, with lots of lovely cocoa and caramel notes. Full, creamy mouthfeel, with an average carbonation. Finishes smooth, moderate roasty, a bit sweet, toasty, with cocoa, caramel, dark fruits. Tasty! Very smooth and greatly balanced, with enough toasty notes and dryness to compensate the dark, sweet notes. Classic, accomplished style example, very enjoyable.
