A dark beer, light and sweet and full bodied, highly fermented, very malty aroma. The slight Hpfennote rounds out the flavor and gives this drink a monastery special character. A beer in the good old custom of the monastery.
2.8(Thanks, Jim! "ozzy70")
Bottle.
A- Musty, malty, bready, caramel.
A- Dark copper color, dark liquid, beige head.
T- Iron, malty, caramel, bread dough.
P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish.
O- Really okay. Had a lot of that iron/blood taste that I find pretty repulsive, but that said, it was otherwise a pretty average beer. 5 years ago, this would have been my thing, but anymore, it's not something I get too excited over. That said, I had been wanting to try something from Ettal, so glad I got that chance.
3.5Aroma - malt, toast, nut, and syrup
Appearance - body is a cola brown. With an absolute ton of head. 2+" of fluffy khaki colored foam. This guy is fully charged. Got to be patient with this one.
Taste - malty richness dominates. There is toast, nut, syrup, barley, and biscuit.
Palate - body is medium, texture is smooth, carbonation is average, finish is rich and malty.
3.5Rather malty, nuts and caramel with a sweet base. A little hint of hops that is not very bitter coming through in the finish.
3.4Tap at Tennsee. Pours Cola colour. Nose is chocolate, citrus, bread. Palate is dark chocolate, toffee, bread. Surprisingly complex, nice dunkel!

3.4Bottle. Clear dark amber color with creamy white head. Aroma is earthy, nutty, grainy, cereals. Taste is nutty, cereal, grainy, earthy, a touch paper. Slightly watery mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Flavour is fine, it could just be a bit more intense.
3.4Brown color with rocky beige head. Aroma is malty with bread crust, dark rye bread and a hint of caramel. Taste is mostly malty, slightly nutty with a touch of hop bitterness on the finish. Light body, medium plus carbonation. Overall it's a really well made dunkel.

4.0Ar: Rich, molasses-glazed bread; hint of black pepper; herbal hops; a little coffee and black tea leaves. Ap: Deep amber-brown, clear; large light tan head with excellent retention, leaving a frothy, thick cap of foam. T: Toast and rich, full caramel; cocoa, coffee, and root beer; woody hop flavor, slightly herbal; low bitterness; a touch of sweetness up front; bread crusts and cinnamon on the finish, mingling with more deep, rich malts. P: Medium body with medium-high carbonation; finish is medium-dry. O: Drinkability and full flavor are at the core of this beer; rich without being cloyingly sweet and complex mixture of toast, roast, coffee, and chocolate; smooth, clean, and amazing!
3.7Draft pour. The beer is a clear brown color with a big head of beige foam. The aroma is dry and toasty. Some toffee and nutty notes. Mild roast in the finish. Medium body and medium carbonation.
3.3A decent Dunkel from Ettaler. Tastes vey natural and is highly drinkable. Not as refined from the bitterness as most Dunkel, but certainly a refreshing beer.
3.5500ml bottle at home, Munich. Aroma is malt, light coffee, light bread. Appearance is dark brown with a thick brown foam. Taste is light sweet and light bitter. A soft carbonation, nice balanced. Great dunkles.
3.8Bottle. Archer Road Beer Stop, Sheffield. Clear, dark copper colour. Bubbly, blotchy, pale grey head. Nose has fruit and nut chocolate. Cracknel toffee. Some toasty malts. Some caramel sauce. Some woody hop. Taste is light, brown sugar sweet, with a vinous bitter edge. Soft and foamy mouthfeel. Good body. Bittersweet finish that has a little dryness on the close. Very nice.
3.2Bottle from the cloister - Slightly transparent brown color with huge head. Taste is medium caramel, dark malts, dried fruits. Medium sweet. Finishes slightly bitter. Good.
2.6Bottle 0,50L. Clear amber color with average big, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of caramel and milk chocolate. Taste starts light sweet and turns to medium sweet at the finish. There are notes of caramel and milk chocolate in taste, too. Light to medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation. Too sweet for my taste and too weak on the body.
3.1Light smoke and some caramel. A hint of chocolate and nut. Dark brown pour with decent head and lacing. Bittersweet finish. Bottle.
3.2Draft at Brauhaus Schmitz. Mostly clear deep chestnut amber pour with some soft beige foam. Brown bready caramel malts. Raisins. Dates. Apple peels. Toffee. Red beets. Hazelnuts. Spicy dry hops balance out the dark sugars in the finish. Works.
3.4500ml bottle from Johns Grocery. Thin retaing tan-dk amber. A-sweet/caramel med malt, some med fruity. T-follows with 2nd earthy hops.
3.0En mild sødlig øl, med meget mild humle. Næsten ingen kulsyre. God smag, dog ikke det store sus.
3.3500ml bottle [No. 2 of a tripartite mini-series kindly donated by bartlebier, thank you very much!]. Clear chestnut colour with ruby red glimmer and huge, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Roasty dark malty aroma with a nuttily touch, some cocoa. Taste is dry dark malty, subtle sweetness, hints of cocoa, a nuttily touch. Clean, precise, well controlled sweetness. Good.
3.4Bottle pours a dark semi clear chestnut with an off white. Aroma of roasted cherry wood. Tastes is light malt with some cherry and wood notes. Paltes ends bitter. Good stuff.
3.9Bottle. Chestnut brown with a large head. Aroma is a nutty, malty fare with hints of grains and a whiff of dried fruit. Taste is slightly sweet up front with roasted grains in the middle and a mellow finish.
3.550cl bottles 06-07/2015 courtesy of brewery, danke. - Thinner shoesole brown pour, vivid foam. Dry roast and a fruity acidity of apple peel and chestnut in the nose, very dry toast, shrub and woody caramels in taste. Well drinkable thanks to an attenuated absence of style-typical Dunkel sweetness, with a late grassy hop sting.
3.3Pours dark amber from bottle with robust tan head. Nice malty aroma though let the beer warm a bit to get the full effect. Taste is not the greatest though. Heavily carbonated, watery hints of adjuncts, malty flavor somewhat suppressed and potent though transient noble hop bitterness at the end. Body dominated by carbonation. Overall the malt flavor just didn't punch through as with other dark lagers. Wouldn't buy again.
3.6Bottle; pours clear, dark brown with a beige head; aroma of caramel, yeast, and a hint of nuts; taste is sweet with caramel and nuts; wet finish; no real bitterness with this one, pretty good dunkel
3.6*Old rating, best before 01.05.06. Nettes würzig-röstmalziges Dunkel. Leicht süßlich, mild-weich, intensiv röstmalzig.
