3.5 (Draught at Craft Islington, London, 12 Apr 2014) Hazy amber colour with brief, white head. Fruity nose with notes of blueberries, grapefruit and citrus. Fruity, slightly tart taste with grapefruit, citrus, grass, a touch of blueberries and a dry finish with a slight tartness. Medium body, quite dry, with low bitterness. Refreshing and tasty, with a fresh tartness. Nice one.
3.6 A steady pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a two finger thick, pink / pale-blue tinged, head that leaves some light lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is a deep, dark, purple / concentrated amber color that shows a mostly clear, deep red / purple stained hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of lightly wooded oak up front, but then a toasted oak character towards the finish. Throughout there is a floral blueberry character and a tart berry character. Lightly tart up front which plays a soft berry character that is just distinct enough to hint at tart blueberries. This has a nice, prickly carbonation that isn’t overly heavy, but adds some zip to the light body. The finish has a light, woody astringency, as well as a rounded toasted oak character to it that brings out an almost toasted cracker like character. As the beer warms up the berry character, and perhaps the barrel influence, brings out some red wine like flavors towards the finish; this adds some complexity and interest to the flavor, in what would otherwise be a simple beer. Clean like a Berliner, with a clean tartness and light beer notes. The fruit and the barrel contribute more here than the base beer, but these are light enough that they don’t overwhelm things. This beer is down right quaffable, and quite nice in the end.
3.9 Bottle generously given to m by Hopscotch and served in my PW bowl: Pours a coppery pinkish hue with a fading fizzy head. Darker than the other version. The aroma has notes of lactic and acidic vapours, light red grape and blueberry skin, greek yogurt and cheesecake, mineral water. The taste is quite grape-y and moderately tart with a skillfully placed pils and wheat background. A touch of barnyard and cheesy notes are noticed by clearly just a subplot to the brisk acidity. This beer is lively and refreshing but could still stand for a tad more carbonation. Overall I like this a bit more than the Westbrook version but each have there strengths and weakness.
3.6 Draft sample. Pours a hazy grapefruit juice color with a small tinted white head. Notes of blueberries, sour mash, wheat, sourdough, lemon, and funk. Light-bodied, with a dry mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Finishes a little watery and mineral-like. Pretty good.
3.4 Tap sample. Poured hazy red orange color with a small frothy white head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Moderate sour dark fruit aroma. Light to medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium sour & sweet fruit flavor with a medium Sweet fruit & sour finish of moderate duration. Interesting, still not my style.
3.7 Bottle picked up at Premier Gourmet. Pours a cloudy light purple colour, small whitish head, no real lace. Smells sweet, sour, a little raisin, stone fruit. Tastes like sour and tart, a little off almost barnyard like. No blueberry really.
4.0 bottle, really enjoyed this version. wine barrell aging added a nice dimension, mellowed out the tartness a big, added some wine sweetness & earthiness. very good
3.6 Not much aroma. Has an excellent sour taste. Still really good if you like that kind of thing.
2.7 Sampled from a bomber bottle, this beer had a hazy pink and grape juice colored pour and presented a off-white diminishing light pink and purple head that receded quickly to a ring and partial cover, it left some nice spots and fingers of lacing on the sides of the glass, when I first popped the bottle it had a weird lactic sour almost like a cheese type of aroma, it had a sourness and horse blanket on the nose, and there was very little blueberry fruit on the nose, it had flavors of sour grape, a little blueberry, and there was very little malt, the finish was dry and had a generous amount of sourness, the mouth feel was light and was creamy on the lips, dry on the mouth, it had lively to average carbonation, as this beer warmed up it turned a little watery, this beer had a light nose and flavor, it did not taste that great, this drink was disappointing.
4.7 Bright pink sour. Reminds me of pink lemonade with a bit of wine flavor imparted by the barrels.
3.7 Bottle thanks to ygtbsm94: Poured a dark reddish brown with lots of carbonation. Very little head. Smooth light fruit of blueberry aroma. Taste is a acidic berry with woodsy wine hint toward the finish.
3.5 1/28/2014. 22 oz. bottle. pours a deep amber color with little to no head. Aromas are fruity and hints of oak. Light malt. Tart flavors with fruits showing, but not detecting much blueberry. Almost like a sour ale. I like this one, but not for what it was supposed to be.
3.1 Bottle. I have mixed emotions about this one. It was really sour, exactly what I wanted. Taste was a little weird though. Fruit, funk, sour and a strange aftertaste. I’d drink it again but won’t buy it.
3.3 Hazy orange to amber pour with a 1 finger, creamy off white head that has great retention. Aroma is loaded with blueberries, some sweet, toasty malt and light sweaty, sour funk. Flavor is a little thin, there’s some dried blueberry, dusty grain, raw wheat, light tart vinous notes and a little funk. Light body, dry, slightly dusty, but crisp feel throughout. Decent, I thought it was a little light on flavor for a Berliner Weisse.
3.9 Pours hazy gold with white head and really active carbonation. Aroma is heavy on blueberry. Very tart at first but it quickly balances out with a wheat malt character. Lots of blueberry’s, which is good. Very dry almost champagne like texture. Good.
4.5 Bottles from Whole Foods and Smith’s. Pours turbid and fizzy dark straw colored with minimal head. Nose is great tart fruit, blackberry, hops, lactose. Tastes tart, with big fresh blueberry flavor, heavy tartness, and finishing funk and lemony notes. This one is excellent, and as god as I recalled the first time I had it in August 201 in Craft Ale House from a shard bottle from the Queen of Beers, Janet.
3.7 Bottle courtesy of my good friend. Cheers! Pours a hazy purple-amber with a white head. Nose is a bit of sweet berries with a vinous character and some noticeable tartness. Flavor is similar- nice berliner with some lactic tartness, some vinous character, and some vinous fruit/ red grape enjoyablel character. Light to medium in body and nice overall.
3.7 Poured from bottle. Cloudy light purple color. Smells sweet and sour. Tastes sour and like black berries. Pretty delicious!
3.6 500 ML bottle More of a purple amber color really. Thin off white collar for a head. More of a wine quality. Some tart red wine, acid and lemon curd. Rather muted though. Crisp acidity. Blueberries, cranberries, red wine and lemon. Prickly carbonation, medium feel. Very dry oak finish. To me far more developed than the regular version. More character
2.9 13 dec 2013, bottle. Faintly pink, almost pink. Faintly sour note, earthy wheat thin body and faintly fizzy. Light blueberry, faintly sour. Meh.
3.6 Poured a cloudy orange color with aromas of light wet wood, some tart wheat, light lemon and some musk. Flavors are the same a light vineous aftertaste, interesting take on a berliner.
3.8 Nose is tart and grainy with mild fruits and fruit skins. Purple/pink pour. Flavor is light grainy wheat, fruit, and tart in the finish. Medium light funk. And just a very very slight touch of acetic acid. Pretty nice.
3.6 En tirador@biercab:berliner con tono lila muy pálido.acida, correcta, curiosa
2.9 On tap poured a cloudy orange hue w/ a small fully diminishing white head. Initial flavor light sweet w/ a bold tart finish. Tastes are blueberry and lemon. Medium bodied, light carbonation, and crisp finish.
3.5 Interesting bluefish purplish pink. Nose was slight tart, oak, wine, some acidity. Taste was more oak, grain, lemon. Wished for not tart and blueberry. It was there, just not as much. Mouthfeel was light and god carbonation. Interesting stuff that I think could have been pulled together a little bit more.
3.8 Bottle shared by Hopscotch. Clear plum pour with white head. Vinous aromas. Mild vinous, muted blueberry, and wood notes with just a hint of caramel malt. Decent body and mouthfeel.
3.5 Poured a hazy yellow color with a whitehead. Aroma was of light funk, cracked wheat, lemon peel and blueberries. Mild blueberries in the flavor, slightly vineous and crush grains on the finish. Ok.
1.9 $11.99 Bomber Bottle, Wine Warehouse, CHO. Pours a slightly hazy amber with a huge, tiny-bubbled head. Smells of sour berry and wheat. Flavor is a horribly bitter under-ripened blueberry mess with a vinegar taste. Yuck. Not for me. I estimate I poured about $7.00 down the drain with this one.
4.4 A: Purple/Ruby Hue, Passes Some Light, Thin White Head Ring, Some Lacing S: Mildly Bitter Blueberries, Red Wine T: Bitter Blueberries, Light Merlot, Tart Cherry M: Average Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Semi Tart Overall, the red wine barrel and blueberries really popped after letting it warm up for 45 minutes...do not drink cooler temp.
3.7 Bottle. Medium gold, little head. Definite sour aroma, but little hint at any blueberry as labeled. This drinks with an up-front sour edge, puckeringly sour even. I still don’t get any blueberry. Cleanly made and nicely in the Berliner lane, although based on the label, I’m not sure that’s what I expected. Good beer, though. (#5311, 11/4/2013)
