Evil Twin Molotov Cocktail - Single Simcoe Hop Edition

Evil Twin Molotov Cocktail - Single Simcoe Hop Edition

Despite the crudeness it is tricky to make an effective Molotov cocktail. Despite the unruly nature of the rebel it is very tricky to resist accepted conventions. Molotov Cocktail is a tour de force in rebellious hoppiness, it’s a spark for action and by far one of the most anti-authoritative beers ever made by Evil Twin Brewing.

3.8 Bottle Aroma-honey, fruits Appearance-golden, clear, white foam, Taste-medium bitterness, medium sweetness, lightly sour, Palate-full body, sticky, lively, bitter finish Overall-very good
3.0 (bottle) Aroma:alcohol, citrus fruits, malt. Appearance:yellow color, quite clear,medium-sized ugly head. Taste:semi-dry,flavour of malt, tea and resin, dry boozy finish. Palate:medium to full body, chewy mouthfeel, boozy, low to mediu mcarbonation. Overall: Boozy astrigent and oxidised brew.
3.5 Bottle shared at hopaholic. Floating yeast chunks, yellow colour small white head. Nose is sweet, fruity. Taste is booze sweet fruity, but the alcohol is too dominant.
3.9 @ Budapest. Coppery orange. Just a ring of head. Big resiny, piney, slightly boozy aroma. The flavour is also boozy, with a bit of caramel attempting, and failing, to balance the hops. Pretty good, not great.
3.4 [Thank you David!][650 ml. split by two @ Boxing Day Tasting][Batch #006 08:53 - so yeah it has a time stamp but no date, least useful bottle dating ever.] Hazy orange, creamy off-white head with nice lacing. Nose is pleasant pine resin but also a very thick strange yoghurt profile mixed with white sugar, yeast, pine, cooked apple. Taste is too yeasty, white sugar, oddly sweet sugar, overshadowing the hop, hop is lightly medicinal with pine resin, cooked apple, finish is just pure medicinal alcohol, brutal, feels far boozier than 13 % ABV. Body is medicinal spirit, thick yoghurt, very malty. Overall this felt more like a challenge than a real beer, stupidly boozy, odd sweetness probably to hit the ABV, yoghurt profile,... It was a chore to finish it. I wanted to like it more. I liked the regular one on draft, not sure what went on down here.
4.2 Bottle. SLightly hazy, dark golden in colour, weak head. Sweet, malty and citrus/pine hoppy notes in aroma. In taste sweet, sticky, oily, hoppy (resin, citrus) - definitely Simcoe profile. Full bodied, softly carbonated, finish was bitter. Really tasty IIPA.
3.8 One of Evil Twin’s Molotov Cocktail variants, this one hopped with nothing but Simcoe (one of my preferred hops so this can’t go wrong...). My bomber is an older one for sure, but as is too often the case with these American beers, no bottling date is mentioned; I do not know how many batches were made, but this must be the original, making it a bottle of two years old. Thick, frothy, irregular, snow white head lacing in ’dots’ around the glass, quickly thinning in the middle to a diffuse veil; hazy orange blonde robe with warm peachy hue and translucent dots of yeast throughout. Aroma breathes the typicalities of Simcoe, with hints of toasted garlic, shallot, grapefruit peel, old orange juice and smoked paprika, accompanied by a lightly ’rusty’ oxidation, but fortunately still subtle enough not to disturb; other impressions include, in a decreasing order of intensity: dried mango, spruce, honey liqueur, biscuit, sundried tomato, warm apple cake, cognac, fried egg, lightly toasted white bread, sweet sherry (must be the age again), mandarin flesh, dried banana, red curry paste, sugar syrup, white pepper, old dried ginger root, iron, corn oil. Very lively onset, sweet exotic fruits all around varying from dried banana and blood orange over maracuja to guave and candied mango, superseded by a kind of subtle, ’white’ sugariness that sticks a bit to the teeth, but manages to avoid off-putting cloyingness; carbonation is medium, mouthfeel is evidently very full and oily, very vinous as well, slick and ’heavy’ - the latter being no big surprise for a beer of this potency. A thick, viscous wave of biscuity malt sweetness glides over the tongue, with just a subtle toasted twist adding a tiny bit of bitterness; meanwhile hop bitterness, already noticeable in the onset, grows and grows, arriving at a full-fledged, aromatic, piney, spicy and tonic water-like bitterness in the finish, with this toasted sweet onion character that I tend to associate with Simcoe rising up retronasally. Still, in spite of this wave of generous Simcoe goodness, the honeyish and very - heavily sugared - orange juice-like sweetness persists unabatedly under all this and goes down into the finish along with the oily, spicy hop bitterness, as is so often the case in these superstrong ’imperial’ IPAs. Add the vinous, oily mouthfeel and a firm dosis of warming, Pineau- and brandy-like alcohol and you get something with certain barleywine-like traits (certainly at this age!), though in all this remains firmly rooted in the IIPA style. I never expect subtlety from an Evil Twin beer and this is no exception; like the other Molotov Cocktails, this is a very bold, high profile, demanding and mighty brew, perhaps a tad over the top - yet still retaining dignity, complexity and drinkability. Reminds me a bit of the actual ’Heavy’ variant in this series, though just a tad less extreme. If you prefer your big IPAs to end dryingly bitter, however, this will not be your beer: the sugary orange juice sweetness is there from the very beginning till the bitter end, at near equal force as the hop bitterness; both factors have been tuned up, but somehow I think this beer would have been more refined if that sweet component would have been just a little bit more restrained. That being said: this is, in all, an older sample (probably near to two years old), so I have every reason to assume the hop character is more outspoken in a younger one, thus achieving the balance I’m looking for. I’ll give this one the benefit of the doubt, it’s the only sample I can judge now and I did enjoy it for sure.
4.9 Sin duda una de las mejores cervezas que he probado, el aroma es muy bueno, entre naranja, piña entre otra, es de cuerpo medio a robusto, tiene un sabor agridulce pero muy rico
3.5 Bottle 65cl. @ 32GreatPower, Seville, Spain. A: Hazy amber. T: Hops, malt, resin, citrus, sweet, tropical fruits, alcohol.
3.7 Pours a slightly cloudy, copper-gold, with nice-sized, lasting head. Aroma is quite grassy, whereas the flavor is rather sweet, with lots of citrus. There’s almost a medicinal quality to the flavor--cough syrup or something. More than a little licorice or anise flavor in this one, too. Good, bitter hop finish to the whole enterprise. I just wish it wasn’t quite so sweet.
4.0 Appearance: Bright red copper. Hazy. Firm head of white bubbles. Nose: Sweet malt, citrus, funk, earth and tropical fruit Taste: vibrant citrus and tropical fruit. Candy sweetness, elements of funk and bitter. Body: Lively and medium bodied Parting thoughts: Gorgeous. A great IIPA. I’ll stock up next time I see it.
3.4 Draft to taster at cappy’s pour avg gold with thin white head. Nose dank hop, over ripe fruit, light vegetal, sweet malt. Taste moderate bitter bite up front, sweet malt and grassy fruit. Mid palate some heat from alcohol. Moderate bitter finish.
3.9 Hazy amber/gold color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of citrus hops, pine, some caramel, & floral; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel, citrus hops, some pine, and fruit/citrus; Finish is slightly bitter with some alcohol; Good stuff.
4.4 APPEARANCE - Light, hazy, 1FH. AROMA/SCENT - Hops, malts, yeast, fruit, citrus, pine. TASTE - Hops, malts, nutty, pine. MOUTHFEEL/PALATE/TEXTURE - Thick, smooth, clean, creamy, lingering, warmin VALUE - $7.99 for a 22-oz. bomber. Decent. OVERALL/DRINKABILITY - Mellow, lingering and less bitter that other DIPAs.
3.6 The aroma is full of simcoe hop, citrus, pine, flowers, caramel malt and honey. The color is copper/gold-like. The taste is full of hops (simcoe), pine, citrus, honey, pineapple, mango, passionfruit, caramel malt and alcohol but not that present (luckily).A nice beer!
3.6 Big bottle from Beer and Wine. Golden body with medium head. Nose of hops and lots of alcohol. Taste is straw, hops and really sweet and strong. Really punchy. Good stuff.
4.4 Aroma of grapefruit, blood orange and lemon. Pours the best golden colour I have seen. A thick white head. Taste is so full of orange and grapefruit. Medium body, average carbonation, bitter finish. Wonderful beer.
3.2 Bottle. Light golden, hazy, average and mostly diminishing head. Moderate, malty and lightly sweetish aroma, faint - light caramel and berry fruitiness, light - some grapefruit hoppyness, light alcohol. Body is medium, malty and lightly sweetish flavor, faint caramel and berry fruitiness, some grapefruit hoppyness, light - some alcohol. Finish is average, malty and dryish, faint berry fruitiness, some grapefruit/herbal hoppyness, some alcohol. 13% is way too much for this body - not very enjoyable.
3.3 Bomber - pours a clear rich golden amber with a med off white head. Not a big aroma...I was hoping for more
3.8 Very clear amber body with a minimal head. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, citrus. Flavor is sticky sweet. Palate is fairly smooth. Easy to drink for 13%, not challenging. Kind of like this.
3.8 Aroma is hops/Simcoe, spices and slight earthiness. The flavor is Simcoe/hops, berries/a hint of blueberries, slight earthiness, mild honey/sweetness, spices and a mix of the expected Molotov Cocktail alcohol and bitterness in the finish.
3.9 A golden DIPA with a very thin off white head. Crisp biscuit malt with light resinous floral hops, grapefruit pulp, light sulfur notes, nice. In mouth, a nice crisp biscuit malt with loads of puckering bitter resinous floral hops, grapefruit pulp, alcohol warmth, smooth and in your face. Bottle at OttBottShare April 2016.
3.8 This beer needs some time to get used to, as it is quite sweet on top of the light hop taste. Yet the more you drink the more it become likable. As the bottle is not small, at the end I really enjoyed this special beer.
4.3 The Single Hop Simcoe version has a decernably different hop profile than the classic 2015 version. This one leads with a grassy dryness morphing into citrus, orange rind and earthiness. There was some traditional liqueur smoothness, but less sweetness than the regular version. A great beer for those who love astringent hop bombs.
3.5 Hazy copper pour with a thin soapy white head and light lacing ... Aroma of soapy and floral hops, lemon/mango, citrusy and sweet .... Taste is sweet and of floral, earthy hops, lemony and citrusy hops ... Sweet and lively with a bittersweet hop bite ... Has a lingering bitter dry hopped bite ... Finished spicy and dry bitter hopped ... Interesting and bitter with a dry rindyness
3.9 Keg at Doghouse. Pours orange with a large white head which recedes with a lacing in its wake. Aroma is caramel, pine, mango. Taste is caramel, piney, resinous, mango sweet, peach sweet. Full body. Aroma is a bit of a letdown but flavour makes up for the lack.
3.2 Sampled on draft at Hou Thou this beer poured a hazy apricot color with a small foamy white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was tangy and sweet with cactus, pine, sugar, honey and a medicinal note. The flavor was tart, bitter and citric with notes of sugar, hard candy, prominent sweetness, a bit of booziness and a medicinal note underneath. Amazingly long finish of pine, cactus and sugar. Full body. Ok.
