Evil Twin / Stillwater / Stone The Perfect Crime Black Smoked Saison

Evil Twin / Stillwater / Stone The Perfect Crime Black Smoked Saison

When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity...better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines...dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy...maybe it’s best not to even talk about it.

3.8 Dark brown with tan head. Smoky, roasted malt, brown sugar aroma. Sweet roasted malt start followed with some tartness with slight dark chocolate and smoke notes finished with some citrus hops flavors in finish.
3.3 Bottle; Pour is murky brown with a fine bubbled khaki head into this glass. Its a one/two finger head and it does retain fairly well here. The nose is bready, roast, fruit esters, with a smokiness present here. The flavor profile is robust roast initial moving to cocoa, modest dark fruits, some minerals, and a touch of chalk. It lacks belgian elements you would want out of the style, with the malt side dominating. It’s not bad per se, and it is a little different, but its not impressive by any means.
3.1 At 2014 Most Arrogant Bar Bash (Barleys in Greenvillle,SC) Pours black and opaque, with a very good head. Flavor: very floral, a bit ’wild’, with Belgian yeast and light and medium roast malts. Medium+ strength. A bit sweet up front; clightly funky and slightly bitter aftertaste. O: interesting and moderately complex but not my cup of tea.
3.6 Bottle - Slight soy, dar malts and some grass. Jet brown with a thin beige head. Smoke, peat, hop bitterness, and dark malt. I think this works.
2.9 Well done. The smoke is very subtle. Much lighter of a flavor than I expected upon seeing this dark almost black ale.
3.4 I like this collaboration. Bottle gift from SJ. Nice blend of Earth, citrus, mild wood and smoke. Very good.
3.8 12 oz. bottle. Appearance: slight light brown head, deep copper to brown color, clear. Aroma: chocolate, cherry, light roasted malt,Palate: light body, lively carbonation, dry finish, light texture. Taste: medium sweetness, both of maltiness and of fruit, very light tartness, light-medium bitter finish. Overall, very unique, good balance too.
3.8 Tap at Stone, awesome beer, Escondido, very nice easy drinking saison to start your day
4.0 Super dark brown pour some tan head. Aroma of leather, soy sauce, lactic, caramel. Tastes leather, soy, sauce, smoke, raspberries, licorice, peas. Tangy feel and dry. Has aged well. Seek these out.
3.8 P: Dark brown mahogany tinted cola appearance. A dainty layer of tan bubbly fast scattering head that recedes to a coral reef swirl on top. S: Sweet hard candy and black malt. Smoked grains, burnt molasses, figs, hazelnut coffee, powdery earthy yeast pine and floral hops. Once warmed the aroma becomes similar to a grease trap at a fast food joint. T/M: A cornucopia of earthy yeast, pine and floral hops flood the palate. A sensation of dust in my mouth. Lurking in the background rounding out the dryness are alcohol soaked figs, smoked grains and molasses with a bitter bite of coffee. The smoke really encompasses the back of the throat and surrounds the flavors slowly building it’s intensity to a profile similar to burnt marshmallows. Aggressive carbonation in a medium body. Finish is dry and smoky with subtle tart apple peel. The pine/floral hops are almost too much for this beer. O: I love collaborations and this was a success in my book. Although not a terrific creation of the style. The smoke was delicate but intensified to really pull it all together. An interesting beer to say the least.
3.7 Dry, sour, and burnt malt flavors dominate. The bartender at bambinos in queen anne said this collaboration was not well received. I could see that...I would not describe this dry and dark beer as a saison.
3.0 Poured from bottle to glass. Dark black with tan head. Aroma is estery, barnyard, pepper, earthy, sweet, slight smokiness. Mouthfeel is nice with a light body and good carbonation level. Taste is dry but slightly sweet initially with a dry slightly astringent bitterness following and a clean finish. Overall, this is ok...not as smoky as I would have expected and not as funky either...but a nice refreshing beer nonetheless.
3.4 Dark brown to black pour with a tan head. The aroma has some smoke and ash notes as well as some Belgian yeast. The flavor is similar. I get a lot of ashy and burnt wood notes as well as some heavily roasted malt, Belgian yeast and grass. Medium mouthfeel and high carbonation.
3.1 Bottle 0,355l @Beer Hunters Dark amber-brown color, almost opaque. Tiny off-white head. Nose is very light - berries, some caramel, light tobacco. Medium-bodied. Caramel, licorice, toasted smoked ham flavor. Can’t find much Saison here. On paper better beer than in reality.
3.0 Found this at Bottleworks, bottled 26OCT12 Black with a light tan etch across the surface. Smells of earth, yeast, clay, some light smoke, some cocoa, and a touch of tobacco. Flavor is light, some oaky mesquite character earthy yeast and a little bit of alcohol and some bitterness. Medium body with light carb and a semi dry finish. Not really into it.
3.4 A: Dark Brown Hue, Passes Mild Light, Brown Head Ring, Great Lacing S: Yeasty, Grainy T: Yeasty, Mild Chocolate, Mild Grainy M: Great Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mild Drying Overall, just didn’t get any smoke flavor and didn’t get the flavors promised.
3.0 Bottle. Pours very dark brown with off-white head. Smells fruit, figs and raisins. Tastes very much like a saison mixed with a porter, almost has a slight bretty taste to it. Light to medium bodied, medium carbonation, smooth easy. Not much of a finish. A decent beer. Unique. Glad that I tried it, but not sure I’d get it again.
4.0 smells smoky and chocolaty with a nice fruity backbone. Dark black color with a hint of ruby. Nice thin tan head. Taste is wonderfully unique like a smoked ported mixed with great saison. Smokey yet light and fruity. I think this beer is great
3.4 Serving: from bottle--purchased at Full Throttle Bottles. Aroma: light, floral hop aroma. Appearance: large, rocky, light-brown, initial head. Dark-brown body. Taste: lightly acidic initial flavor and moderately bitter, smokey finish with average duration. Palate: light-to-medium body with watery texture and lively carbonation. Overall: very good.
3.3 At the First Kinki Beer Tasting. The cola brown pour revealed a malty milk chocolate with some hops aroma. The taste was citrus, sour & not all that saison like on a medium body ok but maybe getting past it’s best... I didn’t get any smoke from it either...
3.8 Aroma: Chocolate with a bit of smokiness Appearance: Black with thin beige head Taste: Has the palate of black lager with a caramel and smoked malt flavor Overall: Im not a big fan of smoked beer but this one does a good job of providing that smoke profile while not crossing that line into that artificial taste of Rauchbeer.
3.7 Right off the bat, it is obviously dark but not oily. Slight matly and hoppy aroma with smoke in their too. It is nice and light and goes down smooth, with toasted and smoked notes. Solid overall.
3.8 I like interesting beers and this one is interesting.. Its a smoked amber saison with black IPA tendencies. A bit hoppy and smokey with some interesting yeast character.
3.6 Bottle from Tokyo at Theis and Mette. Pours a clear dark brown with a tanned head. Sweet with aromas of dust and caramel. Hints of smoked malts. Medium bodied. Medium carbonation.
3.4 Bottle at home - thanks to Sune. Clear brown (almost black) - offwhite head. Licorice, fruity, ok bitterness, light light smokey aroma, ryebread notes, ok burned, light citric. Nice.
3.7 This is cool, smoke, fruity esters, roasty malts, tons going on, delicious
3.7 Bottle pour. It lives up to its description as a smoked saison. A tobacco taste mixed with earthy, grass funk. Very unique and well done.
3.8 The nose is pleasantly herbal with hints of dark fruit. A black pour displaying garnet highllights when held to the light. It supports a long lastng tan head, which produces abundant ringed lacing. Tobacco, smoke, herbs, and burnt grain ply the pallet with a hop induced bitter finish A grainy, yet faintly sweet aftertaste lingers. Light body with crisp carbonation. A dry mouthfeel. Oveall, while this may not be a "true" Saison, you can taste its influences. This is a well crafted and rewardingly drinkable beer.
3.6 Bottle @ Olutravintola Kukko, Kemi. Dark brown beer with a small beige head. Aroma has roasted malt, citrus, yeast and smoke. Flavour is some roasted malts, light smoke, some chocolate. A bit light palate but quite nice beer still.
3.8 12 ounce bottle. Pours a very dark brown color with a medium cream colored head. A sweet yeasty and chocolate nose. Light smoke, saison yeast, chocolate, toffee, citrus hops, melds together really well. Comes together like a roasted saison a bit. Maybe the hops have mellowed. Smoke lingers. Surprisingly good.
