FiftyFifty Imperial Eclipse Stout - Evan Williams Single Barrel

FiftyFifty Imperial Eclipse Stout - Evan Williams Single Barrel

4 versions of Eclipse this year. The lions share will go to Evan Williams Single Barrel. Barrels were 10-13 years old. These barrels were kept in an ambient temp storage situation. Approx 180 days in the wood. Should be somewhat bourbon forward with notable barrel character behind the spirit. Beer may have thinned due to storage temp and mild vinous notes based on oxygen pickup during aging. Estimated bottle count...3500. Subject to change...

3.8 2013 edition on the great eclipse tasting. Pours black, first version out of the 7 we had today that actually had a big and resistant foam. Smell is dark malts and grains. Taste is intense, roasty, very roasty grains. Mildly sticky, some decent sweetness. Nice intenseity. Good body and low carbo. Nice
3.9 Bottle from The Gull, North Vancouver; vintage 2016 Black color, large beige head. Mild aroma of roasted malts and alcohol. The dark malt flavor is really good, some dark caramel, mild roastiness, very moderate sweetness, but somehow juicy, with very light barrel character, and very light vinous note in the final. Very good, not worth the 40$ price tag though.
3.9 2016 bottle. Dark brown. Bubbly head. Chocoolate nose with a fair bit of bourbon character. Thick, sweet, and this has a touch of honey and a mellow bourbon note. Quite a woody character. Drier than many of the Ecilpses.
4.1 22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out a lovely whiskey barrel character upfront, with light roast further back. Flavour is similar, with a complex whiskey barrel character, followed by vanilla and caramel. Wonderful whiskey character, with just enough sweetness to amp the complexity up. Excellent.
4.0 650ml bottle @ Jonny’s 2016 Eclipse tasting. Pours a dark mostly opaque brown colour with a thin tan head. Nose hints of sweet bourbon and molasses. Flavour is rich and complex with a semi hot finish.
4.0 650ml bottle at Jonny’s during Eclipses 2016 tasting. Pours an opaque dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma is barrel, dark fruits, some leather notes. Taste is pretty the same with burnt malt notes. Good stuff, but definitely overpriced as usual, though.
3.9 Black, beige head, fruity aroma, chocolate, vanilla, toffee, fun, flavor is fruity, chocolate, vanilla, toffee, coconut, hot, fun, full body.
4.6 Zwart olieachtig bier met fijne schuimkraag. Lekker boozy en mooie warme volle smaak van de whiskey barrel aging. Koffie, whiskey, eik, licht gebrand. Lange warme smooth afdronk. Topbier.
4.7 2012 vintage. Dark brown color, brown head. Aroma has lots of sweet bourbon, dark fruits, molasses, dried dates. Taste is full of dried fruits like dates and figs, bourbon is in the background, adds just some complexity without booze or sweetness. Body is quite light for the style. Really complex flavors, smooth and mellowed out.
4.5 2013 bottle. Held up nicely. Pours a dark black/brown, some hazy streaks, small bubbly tan head. Aromas of a very nice and smooth bourbon, slight vegetal, old coffee, chocolate, roasted malts. Flavor follows with smooth bourbon up front, bits of old coffee and semi sweet chocolate, mild vegetal, roasted malts. Full bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation, smooth finish. Bourbon definitely smoothed out with the age because there was no heat or burn. Really solid and exceeded my expectations.
4.2 Sample at a tasting. Sweet chocolate and molasses and full of barrel, oak vanilla. Balanced, with a smooth chocolaty sweetness. Nice warming alcohol. Excellent.
4.2 650ml bottle [2012 vintage, 9.5%]. Jet black colour with late awakening, average, thick, creamy, mostly lasting, moderately lacing, beige to tan head. Rich and complex dark malty aroma, chocolately, leathery, hints of treacle and vanilla; with warming up the leather is eclipsed in the background, nuttily flavours come in, some honey as well, the remaining leather flavour isn’t free from garlic influences. Taste is moderately sweet dark malty, notes of honey, treacle, chocolate, vanilla; super soft, smooth, silky and minimally sticky palate, creamy, viscuous texture. Less complex than expected, a good deal of flattering sweetness makes it rather easy drinkable. I’m looking forward to see how much variety other editions will represent.
4.3 (FiftyFifty Imperial Eclipse Stout - Evan Williams Single Barrel) Bottle 650 ml at home, vintage 2012, served into a snifter, ABV 9.5% printed on the label, BR 1/2012 marked on the bottle. Pitch black colour on the body, tall and a bit thin dark brown head on top, with good retention. Plenty of bourbon and vanilla on the aroma, dominating almost, then some liquorice and alcohol. Great taste, very bourbon driven, vanilla, chocolate, light roasted malts towards the finish, tanines, wood, light alcohol. Thick body with soft carbonation, sticky on the palate. This one is great.
3.9 22 oz bottle with black wax via trade from notes. Pours a dark brown to black color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark fruits, molasses, a hint of smoke, bourbon, some vanilla and wood, bourbon barrel works pretty well with this some warming alcohol.
3.7 Bomber to snifter (2013 vintage, bottle run no. 2 - black wax; thanks Ferris). Looks good; a very dark (almost dull black) cola with foamy beige head. Smells good too; dark malt, chocolate, oak, mild roast, and a bit of unaversive oxidation. Tastes like it smells, but less rich, with a mildly bitter medium full-bodied mouthfeel that’s slightly warming on the finish. Enjoyable, and drinks easier than 10%.
4.4 Catch up rating from Saturday’s RIS bottle share. Thanks Rich! What a way to cap the night. A standout from start to finish. Warm, welcoming boozy aroma, taste brings in elements of wood and whiskey, and lots of sub-currents of chocolate and molasses. All around excellent.
4.2 Bottle pours out dark brown almost black topped with a small tan head. nose is big bourbon barrel vanilla roast malts coffee. Taste is more of the heavy bourbon barrel vanilla brown sugar chocolate and plenty of the sweetness.
4.1 Boise Imperial Stout Tasting. Near black pour with a thin beige cap. Rich aroma of bourbon barrel and roast, light vanilla and dark chocolate. Sweet taste is loaded with bourbon barrel, vanilla, chocolate, and roast. Potent. Smooth and silky, very delicious.
4.5 Bomber @ FiftyFifty Charity Tasting: Vintage 2013: Served in a taster: Black body with small brown head/lacing. Aroma is an insanely rich and balanced mix of bourbon, vanilla, roast, light soy, light earthy... Flavour is bourbon, liquorice, vanilla, brown sugars, light soy, light bitter... Aftertaste is more bitter with roast, some bohrbon, delicious. Low carbo, creamy silky mouthfeel, close to full bodied.
