Fish Tale Detonator Doppelbock

Fish Tale Detonator Doppelbock

Oak-aged Doppelbock is a full-bodied lager with a deep reddish-brown color. We’ve brewed it in the classic German tradition, with noble Hallertauer and Columbus hops added to Pale and Chocolate malts and a large portion of Munich malt . As a result, Detonator offers a malty aroma and palate, which is balanced by its relatively dry finish, plus the subtly melded character of the robust ales and fine Merlot which previously filled the oak. This lager is available seasonally in bottles and on draught.

3.6 Pours dark red with tan head. Aroma of raisins and sweet malt. Caramel, chocolate, and some molasses flavor.
3.9 Very dark brown body, with a frothy off white head that was thick and creamy with moderate retention. A very light hops aroma combined with coffee and chocolate makes for a pleasant aroma, but was very mild. The flavor consisted of a mild baker’s chocolate and roasted malts. There was a slight warming alcohol and a touch of hops in the finish. Enjoyed this beer a lot the taste was not overpowering like I feared it would be, and in my opinion they hit the style right on.
3.0 Poured a decent tan head overtop a very dark brown beer. Aroma is ok, maybe. Sure there is lots, but it just didn’t appeal to me. Slighty spicy hops, warm toasted malts - needs a hell of a lot more malts. Some sweet malt, a bit tangy and obvious powerful spice - way way to much to enjoy in this style. Way too many hops. Mouthfeel is fairty smooth. You can feel the alcohol burn deep down. Hoppy aftertaste. I actually enjoyed the beer despite the review.
4.0 Yeah this one was tasty. Nutty and smoky aroma. Left a creamy brown head the entire length of the beer which lent the texture its creaminess as well. A bit of a smoky malt flavor and some dark malt flavors as well. The finish had just the right touch of bitterness to give a little more character to this guy.
3.8 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a small, rocky, off-white head, somewhat lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (chocolate, nutty, caramel), average hop (perfume, herbs), heavy yeast (dough, leather) with notes of figs, plum, and brown sugar. Full bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a chalky finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.
3.7 2008 22oz bomber. Pours a dark but clear syrupy brown with a minimal tan head. Aroma of grass, rich malt, dark fruits, some chocolate. Flavor might be slightly cooked which is a shame, just a touch of leather, oxidation and other off-flavors. Rich sweet toasty munich malt, molasses, grassy hops, just a bit burnt, some leather, faint berries. Plum finish with an ashy aftertaste. I’m thinking this is better fresh. Medium/full bodied, thicker water feeling, lumpy carbonation.
3.8 A clear brown bock with a thick light moka head. In aroma, toffee, oranges and coffee, lightly hoppy. In mouth, a decent sweet chocolate malt, with light aniseed, and nutty finish. Rich and smooth. Tasted July 2007. Thanks to presario for trade.
4.4 22 oz. bottle. Pours a clear dark brown. Sweet aroma of malt and brown sugar, caramel, etc... Great finish. One of the best dopplelock’s that I’ve had.
3.8 Pint glass from bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with a thin off white head, minimal lacing. Smokey chocolate aroma with some roasty toasty malt. Sweet dark chocolate flavor, with heavy malt character. Foamy soft mouth feel. Solid doppelbock.
3.9 2007 bomber opened in 2008. Pours clear dark brown with ruby highlights and a thick and creamy tan head. Sweet aroma of brown sugar, caramel, alcohol and a bit of oaky vanilla. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Maybe its the oak and alcohol influence but the taste has a bourbon-like quality to it, along with the nutty fruit and brown sugar. Floral hop finish.
3.9 2008 Bottle - Pours dk brown with a decent tan head...aroma is dry fruit, tobacco, molassas malt, flavour follows....well balanced hop resin bitters and caramelized sugar, this was a fun brew and @ 10% abv a great winter drinker...
3.9 [Bottle] Pours a deep brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is raisins, alcohol and oak. Flavor is raisins, soy sauce, caramel, and vinous merlot hints. Medium mouthfeel and dryish finish.
3.9 Pours a sexy dark, dark red, with a tiny camel coloured head. Wine esque aroma with molasses, coffee, raisins, and dark malts. Flavors are very complex. Sweetness hits your tongue and then mellows out into a malty bitterness. Flavors are raisins, molasses, coffee, and malt. Really interesting beer.
3.7 bottle, walnut colored pour with a bourbon tinge, head is a non starter, nose is very figlike and molasses, flavor is an excellent blend of chocolate, molasses, figs, and caramels, finishes sticky sweet with a touch of alcohol
4.1 Thanks again to General Gao for this 12 oz! Nearly opaque brown-black with a big, lasting head that leaves some nice frosty lace behind. Chocolate, caramel, a hint of molasses, and maybe a whiff of alcohol on the nose. Tastes of chocolate, molasses, fig, raisin, vanilla, oak, and light whiskey. Medium body is smooth and watery, with just enough dryness on the finish.
3.7 old rating: 7/4/7/4/15 - 3.7, vintage 2007. vintage 2008 pours a black with a red tint when held to the light, a thin tan head, good lacing. smell of grain, malt, some cocoa, some caramel, and roasted nuts. taste of dark chocolate, some wheat, touch of vanilla, a little malt, some sweet caramel, a roastiness to it, end is a little dry with some bitterness.
3.8 Bomber from Bottle Trek. Very dark reddish brown color with a slight tan head. Rich aromas of dark roasted malt and chocolate. A tad vinous. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is chocolate, dark roast malt, and perhaps a coffee touch. It’s dark stuff. Could also be some dark fruit. Still seems a bit vinous. It’s extremely tasty. Finish is not all that sweet, and there’s some bitter around the edges. A really good beer.
3.8 12oz bottle from Discount liquor’s bargain bin. I saw it sitting by itself looking lonely and pathetic. For only 99 cents I thought, "why not"? Pours a nice frothy head with a decent amount of lacing. Deep reddish hue with nice aromas of molasses, noble hops and vanilla. Flavour much of the same, but with an added creamy character that left a pleasant mouthfeel. A bit of smoke helps to round this out and give it just a touch of added complexity. Pretty well done offering from Fish Tale.
3.8 Only one Fish Tale was on the shelf at Steve’s in Madison and it was this one. Not my favorite style, I bought it just because it was Fish Tale. No regrets. Sweet, malty, chocolate flavor. Excellent Dopplebock.
3.7 A little bit expensive for what it is, but a good beer for sure. Sweet with caramel, mollassas, and malt. Some chocolate in there as well, but sweet chocolate, not bitter. Also, sugar beets are surprisingly a prominent flavor, whether there are any beers or not I don’t know. I don’t taste the oak.
3.7 From a 12oz Bottle. Courtesy of Stine. Mostly transparent, rust tinted chestnut brown colored pour with a thick finger of foamy beige. Malty aromas of milk chocolate and nutty coconut husk, along with hints of flamed raisin and light toast. Mostly clean, with a subdued alcohol presence. Medium full bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel with a smooth, creamy texture. Flavors of toasted bread and nuts up front on the palate, and grows increasingly roasty toward the finish. Warming alcohol in the final smack, coming across as boozey, spicy oak. The oak is subdued and is well integrated in the beer, but the flavors are biased toward the roast too much, causing that rich munich raisin character that I’m craving to get a bit lost. Thanks, Eben!
3.6 Bomber. Pours dark orange-brown with small tan head. The aroma is rich caramel, prune, some sweet chocolate, maple syrup, and a distant Pepsi note. The flavor is ash and caramel with a bit of a smoky feel. There is some bitter chocolate, burning leaves, and some earthy hops. Dry, ashy finish and aftertaste.
3.7 12oz bottle and i forget who gave/sent this to me but thanks!.....pours a dark and opaque reddish brown with an enormous tan head that took some time to settle....aroma of toast and biscuity malt in addition to sweeter dark fruit and wood.....flavors of dark fruit, roast, and even some hop bitterness but it all seems a bit muddled together. creamy mouthfeel but still felt somewhat thin.
4.0 Pours a dark reddish brown with a khaki colored head that fades to a small ring fairly quick. Aroma offers quite a bit with a predominantly caramel and toasty malt, slight raspberry, pear, sherry, wood, toffee, and something unmistakably German (the yeast?). Tastes sweet and malt driven with caramel toast, coffee, fruit-filled chocolate, slight dark fruit presence and the hops add subtle (for the region) bitterness making the finish earthy and flavorful. Medium bodied, but creamy and full feeling, it’s nice to have a good beer from this brewer again as the Leviathan and Poseidon were not to my liking. I like this.
3.8 2008 bottle. Thanks G man. dark pour with thin lasting head. nice hoppy aroma with dark fruit, chocolate, rich malts and coffee. medium body. easy to drink. very flavorful. slightly sour. coffee, chocolate, nice fruit and well hopped. very enjoyable.
3.0 5-4-08 bottle shared at tasting Brown pour. Smell is roasted malt. Flavor is bitter and strange alcohol. Palate is average. Overall, ehh.
3.9 My bottle (22oz) shared at ’Rudolf’s May 2008 Tasting’ -- courtesy of gunhaver. Pour a very deep ruby with a large diminishing foamy tan head. Aroma’s roasty and a little smoky along with floral hops, dark fruit, a hint of chocolate and light sourness. Flavour’s malty, slightly roasty with some nuts, dark fruit and floral hops. This is oak aged done right, everything is well balanced. Dry finish. Medium bodied. A very good version of the style, I really enjoyed this.
3.8 Brownish color. Smell of caramel, bread, malt and fruit, Taste of caramel, fruit, malt and candy raisins.
3.8 Bottle @ Kolding Bryglaug Americans tasting. [thank you, After4ever!] Pours deep red with a medium, nice, creamy, off-white head. Aroma has toffee, caramel and light chocolate. Fine and light mouthfeel. Flavour is soft, sweet with pleasant chocolate, good toffee. Finish is dry, dark chocolate and good, grassy hops. Nice, balanced dobbelbock.
