1.4[ Bottle ][ 2oz ][ Tasting ][ ][ Champagne Flute ][ 12.07.14 ]
murky lemon, thin white ring. Nose is lightly dirty grain, adjunct pale lager dirty. Stale grain front palate, lightly creamy, dirtier near back with more singular lemon, thin frothy finish.
2.512oz bottle pours a hazy gold with some cloudy white head. Nose has lemon, mild perfume. Flavor is sweet, perfumey, mild candy, mild fruit. All kind of muddled. Chalky finish.
2.4Ok. Some lime in this. Pours blonde with good head and lacing. Light sour finish, light. Bottle from Florida somewhere.
2.7From a bottle at the DC Ratebeer event Dec. 6, 2014. Pours a hazy gold with a white head. Aroma of lemon and biscuit. Light wheat flavors. Thin finish.
3.5Pours a cloudy yellow on tap with frothy white head that holds up. Aroma is light fruitiness with nice spicy yeast esters and a back end of wheat. Taste is more toward the wheat and yeast, but nice balance and nothing overpowering, nice coy sweetness from the lime. Overall, pleasant version of the style, good carbonation, nice beer.
3.6Twelve ounce bottle from Whole Foods in Sarasota, Florida. Quite hazy orange/yellow color, assertive bittersweet fruity/yeasty/spicy nose, orange and lime more prominent in the flavor which, while not quite as strong as the aroma advertised, is rather nice: a hot weather beer with some substance. The low overall ratings must be because this isn’t a bourbon barrel aged stout. Well, folks, that’s not what it’s trying to be. This is my first brew from the Florida Beer Company and it won’t be my last.
3.1Bottle from Publix, Naples, FL. Hazy yellow body with a small white head. Wheat, citrus, malt, yeast, some tartness. Decent.
2.8Appearance: muddy orange brown, suspended floaties, quickly vanishing near white head, no lacing. Aroma: lime zest, light coriander, toasty wheat. Taste: muddled citrus (mainly lime), some tangy wheat, wet cardboard. Finish: lingering tangy lime and some wheat. Notes: Not great, pretty muddled, and not much to look at. However, the lime flavor was a nice addition.
3.5Bottle from Publix, Sarasota. Pale yellow coloured with a white head. Nose is wheat, slightly spicy, maybe bit of lime. Flavour is wheat, spices, bit of orange, some sweetness. Medium carbonation. Quite refreshing. Finish is sweet and slightly dry. Decent enough.
3.1Bottle in car universal... Hazy ambee... Big white head... Sofr drt banana wheat... Nise... Sift bitter. Light dry wheat
2.9cloudy brown pour some white head. aroma of wheat, pretzels some citrus. tastes strong yeast, citrus. A bit too powerful flavorwise and overworked.
3.312 oz. bottle from jcwattsrugger. Pours a cloudy pale yellow with a 1/2" white head. Aroma is very light, but I’m picking up hints of wheat, coriander, lemon and lime. The flavor profile reflects the aroma to the tee. Light bodied and tingly on the tongue. A refreshing brew. Would make a nice summertime beer.
3.2Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a glass. Pours translucent pale yellow with small white head. Aroma is light lemon, light body, low/medium carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is malt and some lemon. Some richness, pretty good.
3.0Pours a cloudy, dull light orange color. Light citrus orange and wheat aroma. More citrus in the flavor, light wheat character, mild slickness in the finish with a medium body. Refreshing.
3.1Pours pale gold with a small white head. Aroma is heavy yeast and light grains. Taste is Belgian yeast first, immediately turning into a bright citrus and grain flavor. The finnish is long with a coriander-like vegetal flavor. Interesting.
2.8Very cloudy golden color with a white head. Aroma is citrus, wheat with a bit of sour pungentness. Dry tart fruitiness on the flavor. Soft detergent finish with some floral elements. Fairly straightforward.
2.6Cloudy. Thin bodied. Lots of coriander! I didn’t really get any of the key lime. Maybe because of all the coriander. I’m just a fan of overly spiced wheats.
3.6I poured a 12oz bottle into a weizen glass. There was no apparent freshness date. I received this while at #BBC13.
Appearance: Pale yellow hue, mostly clear body with consistent bubbles visible. Forms a small, white, soapy head which evaporates and leaves no lacing.
Smell: Standard for the style, although a little milder than most. Clean, refreshing aroma.
Taste: There are more fruity wheat beers than you can shake a stick at, but you don’t see too many American breweries experimenting with the witbier style. Though Key West Southernmost Wheat claims to be brewed with actual key lime as well as some other traditional spices and additives, it doesn’t really come through in the taste. That’s forgivable because at the core this is still a pretty tasty, solid witbier.
A light orange flavor seems to be the first thing I notice. A hint of spice is also detectable. Through the middle is more fruity and refreshing taste of lemonade but without any tartness. Just a touch of citrusy bitterness at the apex of the swig, where it then returns as it started with a light juice-like flavor. Coriander and orange peel flavors are noticeable in the aftertaste, but they fade quickly.
Drinkability: Considering the name of this product, there’s already an implication of the beer’s drinkability. In fact, I have had this beer in Key West in the extreme heat of July and it was indeed as refreshing as marketed. The mouthfeel is thin and tepid, but extremely smooth , plus the clean aftertaste is ideal. At 5% ABV it’s probably a little heavier than it needs to be, since I could see this palette being highly sessionable. Not that any real beer drinker will struggle with back to back servings, though.
2.6Aroma orange zest, banana, and clove. Pours ugly grapefruit juice colored with a decent head. Taste is subdued with bland orange pulp, banana and slight clove. Bland cardboard finish. Pleasant enough but forgettable.
2.604-Aug-13 (12-oz bottle: Free sample bottle for stewarding the 2012 World Beer Cup in San Diego, CA)
This beer pours a very hazy, golden body with half an inch of white head that settles quickly to a thin ring. The nose offers aromas of sourdough bread, orange zest, and coriander. On the palate, it’s very bready with a readily apparent soured character. Orange peel adds a lot of flavor as well, but only very gentle bitterness, and coriander is mild in comparison. The beer is medium in weight and comes across as being a bit heavy for a Belgian White. Carbonation is medium, and though the beer isn’t sweet, it’s not exactly dry either, so this isn’t the most refreshing and thirst-quenching examples of the style. Overall, this is fine, but there’s just too much of that sourdough character here. It’s certainly drinkable, but doesn’t generate any enthusiasm for me.
2.4Hazy golden amber with a big head that drops to the rim, light streaks of lace. Taste is sweet wheat with the addition of pepper and citrus through the palate, slowly dropping off in a long non-bitter finish. It isn’t hard to drink, but also isn’t at all memorable.
2.9Bottle from DiarmaidBHK - catching up on old ratings from Oct/Nov 2012 timeframe. Will add a review, eventually, tough this one was rather meh.
3.3I don't really know why this is rated so low... I enjoyed the citrusy, key lime aroma, the appearance was OK, but the taste was pretty good compared to other wheat beers. Enjoyable beer.
