3.5 Bottle sample at Muckfest V on 7/12/14. Pours clear copper brownish with a thin tan head. Aroma of malt, caramel, chocolate, booze and candy. Sweet caramel and bourbon flavor with a sweet candy finish.
4.3 (Bottle) Pours hazy deep reddish brown with a nougat coloured head. The aroma holds deep tones of creamy caramel, dried prunes, sticky raisins, aggressive oak (vanilla, coconut and wood shop), spicy rye (almost minty bubblegum-ish), bread and hops with a couple of years on the neck (in the bottle). The flavour is medium to heavily sweet, medium bitter and tiny acidic with notes of dried fruits, fat caramel, bubblegum-ish rye, extreme white American oak, and resinous/earthy hops. The mouthfeel fat, creamy and numbing with a light to medium carbonation. Fat finish. Near full bodied.
4.3 Bomber received in trade. Thank you rfraga7! Pours hazy reddish brown with a thin offwhite head that doesn’t leave much trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and malty with caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, toasted coconut, charred wood, chocolate fudge, alcohol and hints of sassafras and sweet rye bread. Taste is sweet, tiny bitter and malty with caramel, toffee, charred wood, toasted coconut, bourbon, sassafras, black pepper corns, sweet dark bread, raisins, prunes, vanilla fudge and hints of dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is soft, velvety, slightly boozy, very tiny astringent and near full bodied. Finish is sweet and malty with caramel, toffee, charred wood, toasted coconut, sweet rye bread, vanilla fudge, cocoa powder and hints of sassafras. Luxurious and tasty barrel aged barley wine.
3.9 Clear medium brown body under a tan head. Aroma is complex with all of the usuals. Alcohol. Flavor that follows the aroma.
4.1 Sample @ RBWG, Asheville. Hazy brownish pour with a modest off-white head. Big chewy toffee nose. Vanilla and coffee creamer. Chocolate sundae. Some dark fruit flavors. Raisin cake, prunes. More sweet chocolate with a bit of ashy roasted malts. Pretty rich and fat, oily. Not a game changer, but a really well-done example of the style. Great.
3.8 12th June 2014 Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Big thanks to Paulinho. Hazy amber - brown beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is a little soft, fine carbonation. Rich bourbon and vanilla oak. Bourbon spice. Caramel malt underneath. Trace of coconut. Light spicy finish. Nicely joined up.
3.9 Bottle split at Bruces pad, big thanks to Scopey of Croydonia for this winner, 12/06/14. Mahogany brown/dark amber with a moderate beige swirl that retains well and makes tree shapes! Nose is big candied sugars, ripe dark fruit matter, bourbon wood tinges, toffee fudge, spice. Taste comprises light booze notes, toffee, dates, prunes, dark fruit wash, hint of coconut a la bourbonics, candyfloss. Medium + body, fine carbonation, rich feel. Solid barley wine, well balanced BA and drinks below the ABV.
3.8 Hazy amber, the aroma is rich rye and bourbon, dark plummy and dried fruit character. Smells intense, even with alcohol blasting in late. Big sweet vanilla, milk chocolate, rich, lots of caramel, intense, raisiny fruity.
4.3 Tasting at Matt’s Hazy dark amber to mahogany color with small head. Huge aroma, malt and bourbon, pungent, resiny, a bit dusty, nutty, some tobacco; like beers that were modern in the mid 2000’s. Full bodied, with round mouthfeel; malty, even a bit chocolatey, sweet, bold; the barrel introduces some acidity, which helps; warm alcohol feeling. Great one.
4.0 Bottle via trade, shared at Bruce’s. It pours very dark brown with a small beige head. The nose is raisin, dried fig, earth, wood, vanilla, toasted coconut, cherry skin, dirt and cocoa. The taste is smooth, earth, raisin, warming alcohol, raisin, figgy pudding, plum, prune, vanilla and oak with warming finish. Full body, fine carbonation and slightly oily mouth-feel. All comes together rather well. Top quality barley wine.
4.3 Bottle at MBerkos tasting. Opaque warm dark brown. This beauty reveals itself layer by layer, with the bourbon barrel vanilla late to the game subtle and welcome; no onslaught of hop; supremely balanced and so smooth; the herbal lift from the caraway. Best bw ive had in years.
3.9 22 oz. bottle, sent from deyholla (thanks a lot, Derek), pours a dark mahogany with a very small off-white head. Nose brings out loads of rye and spicy caraway seed upfront, along with wood bourbon barrels following. Flavour is a bourbon bomb, but not in a boozy way, with loads of bourbon barrels upfront. The rye and caraway are barely noticeable, except perhaps in counteracting any residual sweetness. Complex and certainly well-made. An elegant barley wine, drinkable in smaller amounts.
4.1 This one poured a murky medium to light brown wih a small beige head. Aroma was big whiskey character, caramel, dark fruits and chocolate. Falvor was not overly sweet, nice whiskey integrationg and mild rye spiceyness too. Solid.
3.8 Bottle shared thanks to beerman6686. Pours a cloudy dark brown color with a slight off-white head. Aromas of vanilla, caramel, some raisin. Taste is sweet and not too crazy on the alcohol heat from the bourbon. Really well done. Body is on the thin side for what I would expect.
3.0 750 ml bottle at Jeffo"s place - whale hunting tasting. Overall I like the chocolaty character and the raisin touch. Compared to the Wooden Hell and the Fireside Chat, this was the least of ’em all.
3.3 RBWG14 Trip Rating #29. Bottle shared by deyholla at the Friday Night Downtown Inn Bottle Share. Pours a hazy amber color with a thin fizzy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of rye, toffee, bourbon, whiskey, wood, raisin and a faintly harsh finish. The taste is raisin, rye, toffee, bourbon, citrus. Medium bodied, fairly hot.
3.3 650ml bottle, with white wax. Taster. Mostly hazy amber orange darker color. Thin khaki head. Couple dots of lace. Bigger caramel malt in the nose. Good rye whiskey aromas in the flavor. Lightly tart, tannic. Bigger sweet taste. Some light alcohol bite. Light creamy flavors. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, creamy, lighter carbonation. Lightly slick. Interesting, potent, flavorful, barrel aged barleywine.
3.4 650 mL bottle shared and opened by WillRunForBeer at his Merrimac flat. First beer tried in our little shindig. Many thanks! To Chimay long-stemmed goblet, it pours an amber-tinted murky cordovan with which showcased a fine whitish ringed head half a finger in length resting atop. Aromas straightaway of rum raisins, caraway seeds, vanilla beans, muskiness, bourbon oak, and toasted sourdough. Tastes the same with the addition of marshmallow root, orange extract, honey and brown malts, and banana peppers by mid-palate. Soil, wet hops, catnip, and cardamom by swallow. Interesting. Kind of a mishmash of flavors.
3.9 Bottle from trade, extra from Deyholla, thanks, Derek! Pours the color of black coffee with a scant off white head. Aromas of raisin, bourbon, caramel, a touch of spice. Taste is earthy sweet dark caramel malts, some mineral, then oak, vanilla and rye in the finish.
2.9 Bottle share thanks to Homer321. Aroma is barrel, bourbon, salty and a pickle like character, kind of odd. Flavor is mild bourbon character, and I get a lot of pickle juice character for this one, not sure what’s going on.
3.6 Bottle thanks to TheAlumBearsLoverWantsToLikeTheCubs. Pretty sticky with a touch of Booz but very subtle. Hmmm. A little sticky. Pretty good.
3.7 Poured a dark amber color with aromas of bourbon, light rye, toffee, caramel, light vanilla and some booze. Flavors were the same smooth on the palate, better than the non barrel aged version.
4.0 Very dark plum color. Almost flat and the cap was insanely rusted! Smells very tannic almost like a tawny port. Lots of grapes and fruity notes. No bitterness on the nose. Taste is pretty darn good. Fruity, lots of esters and cloves and honey. This is the sweetest barley wine I’ve ever had. Bourbon notes are subdued with a hint of vanilla.
3.9 22 oz. bottle. unsure vintage thanks to Adam Jackson. Thanks buddy. Dirty brown color. Nose is mostly rye whiskey and alcohol. Flavor is pretty complex. Caramel raisins, licorice, caraway seeds and rye whiskey. Has almost a pumpernickel bread bite to it as well. Alcohol is not distracting in the flavor and the texture is smooth. Real nice Barley wine.
4.2 Batch 1 [2/20/2013]: Thanks, Ed! Super deep amber/copper body with dark ruby hints & a lazy head on top. Huge aroma with tons of bourbon & oak, remaining very smooth. Roasted cocoa, caramel, sweet molasses, plums, vanilla, mild maple syrup, & faint toasted bread; you can really catch the spicy rye coming out towards the finish. Taste is similar with notes of molasses, dark fruits, caramel, cocoa powder, coconut, light vanilla, & lots of smooth whiskey drenched oak. Spicy rye & toasted pumpernickel bread finish. The mouth feel is insanely creamy & smooth... Melted Frosty status. Possibly the best barrel aged barley wine I’ve ever tasted. Batch 1 [11/30/2013]: Thanks, Mike! Second bottle of this was a little less impressive; looked the same, more or less, with the same fleeting head. Aroma was still huge with notes of sticky caramel, toffee, booze oak, figs, plums, cocoa, & light barrel-y vanilla. Mouth feel was surprisingly not nearly as creamy & thick this time around. Light oxidation, but luckily mostly in the form of sherry & vinous notes. Cocoa, toffee, butter, vanilla, the rye really comes through a bit more in a somewhat dry finish. Still a fantastic barley wine, but it may be starting to head downhill a bit. Updated rating would be [8-3-7-4-15] with 3.7 overall, but I will give the first bottle the benefit of the doubt & keep that score, since that’s what it was once capable of.
4.1 Pours deep red, minimal head, good lacing Smell big toffee, light vanilla Taste sweet oaky whisky, bit of a bitterness, bit of heat, caramel, rye sweetness and a bit of candy on finish Medium to full body Good beer
3.7 This one has held up nicely. This was at least a 2011 bottle. Pours a deep amber with an off-white head. Nose is caramel, some vanilla, some slight oxidation, but the barrel wipes out a lot of that, then the fruit, wood, and some nice bourbon character. Flavor is similar- lots of bourbon, sherry, some oxidation, and some polite booze. Medium in body and nice overall.
3.5 Pours a dark brown with no head. Aroma of malt, vanilla and oak. Taste is caramel, bourbon and vanilla. Very nice. Solid beer.
