3.3 Bottle. Orange/Amber color. Goes down very smooth...lighter than the bocks I’m used to drinking...good beer
3.0 Sampled at the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild 2008 Strong Beer Fest, on February 17, at the Mesa Amphitheatre.
3.0 Clear light amber with a fleeting head. A malty bready smell is faintly sweet. Med bodied with a smooth texture. A mild, but nice nutty malty flavor here with a mildly bitter finish. Not a bad beer, but weak for a bock. 62406
2.4 Pours an orangish color. Watery, with diluted hops and citrus flavor. Not very interesting. Emphasis seemed to be on the hops, which goes against what a Bock should be. Seems more like a weak IPA. Pass on this one.
3.0 Amber color. Not much special but it is an OK beer. A sweet flavor of mild yeast and hops.
2.9 [988-20071215] 355mL (c/o DuctTape, w/ him, jerc). Doughy yeast aroma seems kind of mouldy. Hazy, orange body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Mild grains and hops and a hint of grass in the flavour. Medium body is watery. Uninteresting.
2.8 12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a thin, dense off-white head that lasted until about midway and lightly coated the glass. Sort of a strange aroma for a bock with only a hint of malt detected with some grassy hops. The flavor is similar with only a little bit of malt along with some grassy hops. Weak finish with a watery mouthfeel. Disappointing.
2.8 Bottle, pours dark orange with a small off white head. Attack is weak but non-offensive, finishes nice with malts and a pleasing bitterness.
2.6 Bottle. Orangey yellow body with a small white head. Odd fruity grainy aroma. Watery flavour, dilute fruity washed out grains. Average to thin palate. Pretty disappointing.
3.1 12 oz bottle thanks to beerlord. Copper color, creamy head, seemed to me a lot like a pale ale. Nice beer.
3.1 Pours a clear amber. No head really. Nose is sugary like the frosting to a cake, but fruity. Flavor is kind of odd. Sweet but with a weird bitter edge to it. Kind of seems rough around the edges. Feel is good on the liquid with a strong bubble that bites a bit. Overall I can’t say this one is overly worth trying. Rough around the edges and lacking any smooth edge to it. Seems like a miss to me and definitely stands as one of my least favorite Flying Dogs to date.
3.5 Gold on pour with a small white head. MAlty aroma. Light malt flavor with a touch fo bitterness, medium to light mouth feel. Finsihs leans towards dry. Nice Helles
3.5 Bottled. Clear, lighter toffee pour with a short, sticky cap of white head. The aroma was sticky and sweet with darker caramel notes and some dried leafy hoppage.. simple and perhaps too sweet, but it smelled good to me! The flavor also had a great deal of very sweet, lightly-toasted caramel, but with more of an herbal twist for hops.. left a sweet impression on the finish. Just shy of medium-bodied, very sweet, and somewhat refreshing on the palate. I liked this, but can see why some wouldn’t.
3.2 Crazy bottle as usual. It hurts my soul. Very little hops. Minimal head. It does have a thick feeling in the mouth. Not a great beer, but nevertheless its ok. It is a different flavor. Odd. Random.
3.7 Golden in color. Heavy malt aroma - no hops in aroma. Sweet matly base with caramel notes. A little fruity.
3.2 Bottle Golden pour with decent head. Aroma and flavor of malt, some hops and thick fruityness. Good mouth feel, good brew.
3.2 Bottle: Pours a light amber color with small white head. Aroma of light malt, caramel and hay/grass. Interesting flavor that threw me off for a second. I’m not real sure how to describe it other than sweet and malty. Their is something that I can’t quite place though. Has a slightly bitter floral hop note throughout. Pretty good.
4.0 Had this beer on 5/13/2004. Aroma is a rich sweet malty scent. Color is a deep clear gold with good carbonation and a thin head. Taste is mildly malty. Starting with medium body it goes down with smooth feel and a malty flavor coming on. Finish comes in with a mild malt flavor and a smooth hop bitterness, this is backed by a very light spiciness. It seems to hit what they wanted it to be. This is a spring beer, but they call it an anti-spring and what better way to brew this then a light Bock. It’s a refreshing, bold and smooth beer that has the feel of spring.
3.0 12oz bottle-A golden body with a small white head and an aroma of malt, hops, and fruity pepples. Taste of malt, hops, sweetness, and a dry bitter finish. Not a bad beer but just not my style.
3.2 Pours a crisp golden color. Aroma is malty with citrus notes. Taste is sweet and malty with a slight hoppy/bitter finish.
3.8 Date: 05/16/2005 Mode: Draft Source: Summits - Sandy Springs clear amber, rich earthy malt aroma with a touch of peat and a hint of sweetness, light sweet malt flavor, well balanced, good rich malt flavor with the right amount of sweetness Aroma: 9/10; Appearance: 5/10; Flavor: 7/10; Palate: 5/10; Overall: 16/20 Rating: 3.8/5.0 Score: ***/4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The score was calculated based upon the notes and an old scoring system.
(Rating #1185)
3.1 bottle - Pours clear golden with a one finger, lingering head. The aroma is malts and some light citrus and yeast notes. The flavor is quite sweet as one would expect from a bock. I’m tasting a touch of alcohol. It’s a little watery and the hops show up just a bit in the finish. Not bad at all, but there are better bocks to be had. edit: oops, that was rating #900 and I wasn’t even paying attention.
3.1 12oz bottle. I do get some light sulfur upon opening the bottle. Clear amber orange with a 1/2 finger white head. The aroma has sweet malts and wet paper up front, with some light grass and caramel coming up next. There is also some light fruit and toast if I dig a little deeper. Flavor is a fair amount sweeter than I thought it would be, as well as the added nuttiness. Semidry finish with just a hint of hop bitterness. Light to medium body with moderate carbonation. Better than I’d expected.
3.0 yellow with creamy head, that leaves some lace on the rapid summer drink down. Smooth, light but not watery mouthfeel. An understated slightly aggressive bitterness, shy of acidic.
3.0 From the bottle pours a nice amber color with a good amount of head. Nice flavor kind of grassy, quick finish.
3.3 Floral hops over nutty, toasty malts in the aroma. Lightly oily-hazy deep golden body topped by a decent white head that recedes to a large bubbled but lasting partial cover and ring with some lace. Nutty and toasty malts with grassy and floral hops . Fresh tasting with fruity esters that evoke peaches and pears. Bitterness lingers but some graininess is notable - in the aftertaste especially. Medium body with soft bubbled carbonation. Bottle sampled with Oakes in June 2007.
2.0 THOUGHTS: A very harsh, bitter beer. Not really my cup of beer. I saw bock on the lable so I picked it up. This was definitely not what I was expecting. A truely unique beer, but not that great. Almost smells like just boiled wort. Too metallic for me. Gets a little better as it warms. A little more sweetness came out but still the metallic aftertast dominates. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, light amber with an average, white head that slowly diminished and left fair lacing. Nice carbonation too. The aroma was moderate grain, hay and straw with some herby hops, doughy yeast and vegetables and cardboard. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, acidic and bitter, while the finish was moderately sweet and acidic, heavily gitter and sour with an average duration. The medium body was a little oily and syrupy with lightly fizzy carbonation and a very metallic finish.
1.5 Golden color. Smells really malty. Odd nose to it. The taste is......bad. I guess bocks are the style I just don’t get. Feels wrong. Too thick tasting without having a thick mouthfeel.
2.7 xxx gotta love flying dog, fun brewery, cool names and bottles so that even if the brew isnt great its still fun to drink. however, im not a big bock fan, and even for bocks this one wasnt all that impressive
