Flying Dog Horn Dog Barley Wine

Flying Dog Horn Dog Barley Wine

Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

3.6 Horn dog pours a deep, murky root beer brown body that has many small floaters, the thin tan cap didnt leave hardly any lace. Aromas of dark sweet fruits like fig, plum, cherries and alcohol all showing up. Flavors of malts, bread, with slight fruit hints showing up, it was very sweet with an alcohol finish. Although it did have many flavors none stayed too long (no aftertaste), it wasnt as big or complex as other barleywines but that in itself isnt a bad thing. This might be a good ’starter’ for folks trying this style for the first time. Overall i thought it was pretty good and worth a try, but i probably wont get it again. Originally rated on 11/25/08.
3.0 Hyvin niukka, mitätön vaahto. Punertavan ruskea olut, haisee hiivalle ja maltaiselle. Erittäin makea ja imelä olut, vain pieninä annoksina. Makean katkera jälkimaku. Maistuu sahdille.
4.0 Bottle. Brown with reddish ruby. Aroma: honey malts, slightly spicy with dried fruits (figs, raisins, dried plum), marsala. Taste: nectar, sweet honey, dried fruits, raisins and dates malt, caramel, sweet sherry.
2.9 Jeg forventer en god oplevelse når den står på bygvin, eller barley wine. Jeg kan ikke finde det helt store der adskiller den her fra andre barley wine, intens smag, fyldig og let spritet. En rigtig barley wine!
3.9 Pours a deep, copper brown with very little foam. The aroma is lots of sweet stuff; honey, vanilla, molasses, pecans. The flavor is really rich and sweet. All of the sweet notes from the aroma are right up front, and then there’s a tingle from the hops at the end. One of the better Flying Dog beers I’ve had.
3.6 Bottle shared, around 7 years old. Hazy brown with a ring tan head. Aroma of rich overripe dark fruits, caramel, toffee, molasses, raisins and malt. Flavour is heavy sweet and above moderate bitter. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. This one has aged pretty graciously.
3.5 Pours a burnt reddish brown color with a khaki head. Caramel, toffee, oak, raisin, molasses, toast and light chocolate aroma and flavors. Full body and average carbonation. Oak, toffee, caramel, toast and booze finish. 2015 bottle.
3.3 Barleywine is not a favorite style, but this is a decent big beer. Booze notes predominate, licorice more in the taste than the aroma. Reddish brown and full bodied, with a lingering aftertaste I did not exactly savor.
3.8 Pours a dark copper with a thin white head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, raisin, and bubblegum. Flavor is sweet caramel, toffee, and raisin. Hides the alcohol very well. Has a thick body, almost syrupy finish. This is good.
3.6 Bottle 0.355l from Only good beer Budapest Hungary.Taste at Ramada Budapest 16.12.2015. Pour it dark brown color with small white head.Aroma pretty much spice, molasis, plum.Taste burned sugar, dark fruits, some chocalte, licorice, spices, good hidden alcohol, apricot and yeasty finish.
3.7 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Raleigh, NC (North Hills). (Vintage 20A which I assume is 2020 but not sure what the "A" means). Muddy brown pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of graham cracker, chocolate, and faint tangerine. Taste is very malt forward with chocolate, star anise, and toffee upfront as notes of wet grass and tangerine peel creep up from the background. Moderate warmth and lingering bitterness. A good English-style barleywine...Original review February 17, 2016 (2015 Vintage). My review and impression were unchanged.
4.4 Bottle - Light brown colour, large foamy beige head with excellent retention and lacing. Sweet malty aroma with toffee, dried plum, dates, hints of honey and raisins. Taste of dried red fruits, raisins, honey and rich grainy maltiness. Nice fruity hops, decent lingering bitterness. Full body, soft carbonation, thick texture, complex and rich maltiness. Highly recommended american style barley wine.
4.5 I didn't take any extra notes when I tried this beer for the first time but I'm gonna try it again and update my comments.
3.7 Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. This 7 oz bottle was shared by Ryan at the end of the night. The pour is a nice mahogany brown with a light brown lace and no lace to be found. The aroma is pretty good. There is a lot of brown sugar and dark fruits. It has a little caramel and a decent sweetness that starts to dominate, nearing a bit cloying. The flavor is much sweeter than the nose leads on. There is a lot of honey present that I’m not crazy about. The mouth feel is decently thick, with a light carbonation and a cloyingly sweet lingering finish. Decent, but I’m not that big of a fan
3.8 Deep ruby with a thick tan head. Big sweet malty, fruity aromas and flavours. Dried fruit, caramel, mild bitterness, slick, oily, boozy. A sipper for sure, but very good.
3.7 Clear ruby beer with a thin, brownish head and a strong, fruity aroma. Flavour is fruit, a bit of apple in there I think as well as something lighter and citric to lend it a bit of balance. Rich maltiness to it as well. It tastes its strength and is very much a sipper but it’s rich, hearty and very drinkable.
4.5 Very beautiful and (unusual for type) coarse foam at this beautiful deep red barley. Smells of fresh fruit, light malt and very little hops. Tastes of lovely fresh fruit. Raisin, plum and tangerine. An unusually delicious barley that can safely be stored for many years with advantage. The flying dog amazes again ......
4.0 Bottle at a bbq. Pours deep reddish brown, nose is caramel, toffee, berries, taste is similar, dry, sticky.
3.3 Amber colour with red hues, pleasant sweet malt and spicy, floral hop aroma. Taste is sweet caramel, burnt sugar, licorice. Full bodied, alcohol present but not overbearing. A little sweet for my liking but a well crafted brew.
4.7 Growler at 5’o Clock Wines and Spirits in Owings Mills. Sweetish blend of carmel, malts and rasins make this a nice brew. Pours a deep amber and golden hue with a modest head, yeilding to a permeable amount of sugars and well balanced alcohol. Slightly piney sensation on the swallow and crispy, yet quite mature, semi oily and full of flavor.
3.7 Caramell chocolate resin Brown minimal head Heavy sweet, medium bitter Long finish Very sweet
5.0 Dark hazy brown-amber with a dark thick head. Very high intensity aromas: honey, coffee beans, banana, grass and a long etc. Powerful, sweet’n’sour, oily and strongly bitter without being rough. Long finish. A hell of a good beer.
3.5 12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured in a dark orange/brown shade, nice light brown head and lots of spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of malts, caramel, some dark fruits and BOOZE... Taste quite consistent, dark fruit, malts and booze. Strong, a sipper but quite well balanced and quite enjoyable. Liked it a lot.
2.8 Mild sweet aromas, alcohol fumes. Cloudy copper color with no head. Sweet & sour initial, honeyish mid palate, and a sweet final that fades very quickly. Medium body. An unimpressive barleywine
3.4 12 ounce bottle. Cloudy mahogany brown color. Rich, sweet toasted malt aroma hints at black cherries and alcohol. More sweet toasted malt flavor with complex dried fruit and boozy notes. Slightly cloying with a sweet sherry like character and a touch of honey. Warming alcohol presence with every sip. Cloyingly sweet malt finish with some spicy hops.
3.4 Piwo przeterminowane dwa miesi?ce. Piana drobna, szybko znika, pozostaje obr?czka. W aromacie suszone owoce. W smaku karmelek. Piwo dobre warte sprobowania.
4.0 Bottle from abbeydale beer stop. Dark amber with a bit of haze. Aroma is rich malt, caramel and cereal. Taste is sweet and slightly bitter. Lovely oily medium body and nice subtle carbonation. Good stuff.
3.7 Bottle. Dark amber, copper. Aroma is boozy malt. The taste adds toast, dark fruit, toffee, sweet sugar, and bitterness. Rich feel with a warm, sweet finish. Very good.
3.5 Lots of citrus and concentrated malt aroma. A little booze an big fermented caramel. Sweet finish with light sourness. Reddish brown pour. Tap at Churchkey.
