Flying Dog Lucky SOB Irish Red Ale

Flying Dog Lucky SOB Irish Red Ale

Lucky SOB is an Irish Red for those whose lives always fall into place…and also for the rest of us who curse those blessed bastards. Brewed with real four-leaf clovers, it is perfectly poised to bring the “Luck of the Irish” to those who drink it. With a rich amber color, its toasted and honey malt flavors are balanced with a subtle hop bite. Not to mention that its clean and refreshing finish is the perfect accompaniment to chants of “Erin Go Braugh.”

3.0 Aromas of dark grain malts, caramel, honey, oats and barley. Pours a dark brownish amber with heavy lacing and thin white foam. Taste brings heavily carbonated caramel, crisp yeast, wet cardboard, grain malt, oats and faint hops. Overall, pretty basic but better than macro irish beers.
3.2 Characteristic toasted flavor. Medium body. Fairly dry finish with touch of sweetness. Good floral hop balance.
4.2 Rich smokey aroma, malty and rich, touch of spice, pleasant semi bitter after taste, complex Irish ale, highly recommend
2.9 Bottle. Nose is malty, dirt plus caramel, lightly sweet, touch of fruity ester and honey. Pour is halfway between amber-brown and tawny-golden, meeting in a sinister dull orange, head is cola-like and fizzes itself out. Taste is medium-sweet with light-medium bitter, gets a biscuity-woody resolution that makes up for some of the naked metal and "dirty" earth, otherwise the light honey and subtle toasted/caramel are very welcomed. Light-medium body but never watery, and this is pretty drinkable. Dirty soda, how fitting! :) [2017.03.09: 2.9]
3.1 malty aroma. red and clear in color with short lived head. medium body, malty flavor with notes of medium caramel malts, very faint note of honey.
3.9 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 7/1/2016. Pours crystal clear deep reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Awesome appearance. Aromas of big caramel, honey, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, floral, light pepper, light plum/apple, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, honey, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, floral, light pepper, light plum/apple, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, honey, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, floral, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Low levels of diacetyl are noticeable, but not out of line for the style. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Irish red ale! All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable and well done style example.
3.3 bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Aroma of raw malt. Clear brown cvolor, three-finger beige head that stays, globs of lace. Taste is semi-sweet malt that adds medium fizz on the swallow, balanced by light hops. More a malt brew than a hop brew. A little heavy in the belly. Decent, but nothing memorable here.
3.5 Reddish amber color. One-finger , white head. Malty, caramel, earthy aroma . Malty , earthy taste with moderate , hoppy bitterness at the end. Good ale.
3.6 Aroma is caramel malts, light fruit, a hint of hops and earthy. The flavor is caramel malts, fruit/berries, mild sweetness/sugar, a hint of earthiness and a mix of slight tartness and light bitterness in the finish.
3.6 Bottle: Clear, deep copper with a creamy beige head. Caramel and toasted malt scent. Taste is slightly nutty, caramel malt and flat cola. A moderate, leafy bitter. Light....but nicely flavoured and bodied.

3.4 Pours a five+ finger off-white head that fades very slowly to a thin layer leaving a good lace. Crystal clear red/amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Light hoppy nose, grassy malt and flavor is piney, grassy not much malt. Light bitter finish. $2.45 for a 12oz bottle at Bert’s Better Beers Hooksett, NH.
3.3 Draft. Clear deep amber color, small tan head. Aroma of light toast. Taste is toasted caramel. Plain.
3.7 Nice smooth almost coin like malt aromas. Great red color but patch thin head. Very smooth light roasted maltyness. Slides down smooth and easy, light balance bitterness.
2.9 Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a snifter. Clear light Amber with small beige head. Aroma is Irish malt, medium/light body, low carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is light Irish malt with some hop balance.
2.7 Toffee forward malt character with very light citrus and eathy hops. Maybe a touch of herbal in the finish too. Nothing bad or special.
3.2 12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip glass. The beer is a clear amber with a beige head of foam. Decent retention. The aroma has some toffee notes on top of an earthy, herbal notes. Some bubblegum notes peak through as well. Earthy sweetness and moderate grainy bitterness. Medium body and moderate carbonation.
3.2 I had this at Global Brew. Pours reddish brown with a tan head. Taste sweet, caramel, earthy. I thought this was ok. I could drink this.
3.8 12 oz bottle. Pours amber with tall, long lasting off white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of piney hops, and caramel malt. Body is medium and crisp. Piney, spicy, herbal hops, caramel malt and ripe fruit fill the mouth. Finish is long and spicy. Very good session brew.
3.2 Pours a medium red with a foamy eggshell head. Smells of honey, clover, cereal. Taste is sweet and bitter - crisp floral hops followed by honey malt.
3.0 I had it from the bottle. The taste is caramel, bread, earthy, and grassy. It’s dry and a decent representation of the style.
3.3 Going on memory for this review, but I recall a rich amber appearance with a steady and balanced head, with an aroma of caramel malt. Flavorful malty notes, with bread, caramel, fruit all present, with a mild hoppiness if you look for it. Highlight was the appearance, otherwise a standard drinkable but authentic rendition of the irish red style.
3.3 Bottled. Red brown pour white head. Heavy on the caramel malt side of things. Not too bad.
4.0 Poured into a dimpled mug. Maroon-red color with a modest, short-lived head. Big nutty and toasty aromas on the nose with a more vague earthy hop presence. Still smells sweet. Light to medium body. Definite nutty and sweet malt character in the taste with a clean, dry hop finish. It certainly fits into the style as far as I am concerned.
3.0 Pours reddish amber with a medium off white head. Aroma is caramel, bread and cereal, all malt coming through. Taste is mildly bitter. Light bodied and a decent Irish Ale.
3.3 Bottel from Beer and Wine. Nice dark brown body with medium head. Nose is sweet, malty, plummy. Taste is also plums, berries, malts, caramel. Really nice and enjoyable.
3.6 Great taste. One of the better Irish reds I've had. It was a perfect looking beer. Just enough foam at top and great aroma. Taste wasn't over barring which made it quite refreshing.
