3.5 Hazy brown with a thick beige head. Sweet raspberry tart aroma. Taste is sweet with a hint of sourness. Well balanced with roast finish.
3.5 RATING # 100. Yippee Kay Yay Mudda Fucka. Butters 6th cellar Reduction. Nice dark amber color. Tart Fruit and clove. Sour apple. Pretty good. Fits the slightly sour beer theme this evening. Smooth. Not much carbonation.
3.4 Pours a fading beige head with a copper-amber body. Smells of red, sour fruit, dark roast. Flavor is sour, lemon zest, cherry, bitter chocolate. Finish lingers.
3.6 Sampled at tronraner’s Xmas Eve^3 tasting (thanks lithy). Pours a purplish amber with no real head at all. Aroma of dark berries. Flavors of wheat and rum soaked fruits. Medium body with low carbonation. I love the art on the label.
3.5 Nice deep amber coloured body with tints of cola, rubies and even some coffee. Aroma of yeast, cherries, sour grapes, chocolate, roasted malt and even some smoke! Very complex - very nice to smell! Full-bodied; Nice strong flavour of roasted malt, figs, raisins, yeast, wheat, coffee and some light fruits. Aftertaste shows some fruit-like cherries and grapes, but mostly pit fruits. Strong malt and yeast along with bitter nuts following taste. Overall, a nice beer-albeit a year old and nice to drink! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Washington, D.C. on 06-August-2006.
3.5 Bottle at Mekong on 12/31/2008 for An’s New Years Eve Party. Slightly hazy dark copper body with a small creamy off-white head. Molassas, caramel and light wheat aroma. Slightly tart molassas and caramel flavor with slight wheat hints. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation.
2.5 I was very surprised to see this 750mL bottle sitting on a shelf at an out-of-the-way liquor store outside Atlanta. Pours with little carbonation and a dark iced tea color with some big bubbles that dissipate very quickly leaving no ring and no lacing. The aroma is pretty weak at this point but smells just like red apple skins. There are hints of banana and spice, but it really smells like apples. The taste follows the aroma and taste a good bit like apple juice, heavy with red apple rinds. There are some spices in the finish along with a bit of alcohol. The mouthfeel is pretty flat, slick and slightly oily. There’s not a lot life left in it unfortunately. Well, I’m pretty certain this bottle is way past its prime and I was certainly shocked to still see it on a shelf. Either way, not too impressive in its current state and I wish I had tasted if fresh.
3.4 tronraner’s Xmas Eve Eve Eve Tasting. Sample from a bottle shared by me. Ruby orangish red with hardly any carbonation. Big malty aroma, caramel. Tastes are much the same, syrupy, raisins and sweetness.
3.4 Bottle at Xmas Eve Eve Eve. Pours orange-brown with a very small cream head. The aroma is caramel, leaves, compost, and bark. The flavor is wheat, chlorine, nuts, and general sweetness. Ok.
3.2 Bottle shared by lithy at tronraners XtasE^3 tasting. Opaque brown with a small ring of bubbles. Aroma of tart cherry bubblegum and wheat flour. Flavors of tart cherry, tomato, brown sugar, alcohol and wheat gum. Near-medium body is watery and dryish.
3.3 750ml Bottle. Pours an amber/brown color with a nice white head full of tiny packed bubbles. There is nice retention and very nice lacing. Aroma is yeas/wheat with some dark fruit and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is slightly tart, sweet fruits with a bit of spice. The mouthfeel is nice but finishes a bit dry. This bottle has some age on it and it has held up, but I am missing the banana and clove notes the commercial description talks about. Worth trying if you can find it.
3.7 Pours somewhat cloudy with a lasting white head. Malty, spicy aroma that repeats in the flavor. Enjoyable.
3.5 Bottle. Poured a red-brown with an off-white head that had some lasting. Sweet aromas of prune, brown sugar, light alcohol. The flavor had caramel, dark fruits, and hints of spices. Light body, light metallic and sweet malt aftertaste.
3.3 Pours a hazy golden amber color. Aromas of clove, banana, fruit, and alcohol. Flavor is alcoholic clove and spice with a bittersweet finish. Good beer
3.5 pours a hazy brown with a good sized tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, rasins, fruits. Flavor is yeasts, dark fruits, cloves, spices, esthers, a touch of sour, and some earthiness. Interesting take on the style, but something is a little off with this one.
3.4 Bottle conditioned 750ml, probably 1-2 years old. Pours dark brown, mostly clear at first but subsequent pours have some yeast cloudiness. Nose is noticeably oxidized but not overpowering. Notes of maple, cola, brown sugar, toast, some figs and dates, and some resemblance to Abt yeast... thick and sweet up front, some sweetened creamed cardboard, cork, and soggy bread notes... on the back there’s a very light spiciness that works with the maple/brown sugar character. Not bad overall, and I’m actually surprised that I like it. I put off opening the bottle for so long because I was dreading what was inside.
3.6 Bottle. Hazy dark amber with some sediment and small head. Aroma is strong of wheat, ripe fruit, molasses, and a touch of alcohol. Flavor is quite sweet but still smooth. Low carbonation, medium bodied, and a very easy drink. Pretty good even with a few big chunks of sediment which I don’t want to consume.
2.7 [1302-20080418] 750mL bottle. Funky pine needle fruity blend aroma is sweet and slightly like sherry. Hazy, dark red amber body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head. Old sour yeast flavour flavour with a general grainy funk and some heavier wine notes. Medium body with a slight sour note. Could be off but I can’t imagine my numbers would change that much. (w/ blankboy, HogTownHarry, jerc, tupalev) Overheard: "I did not have the urge to spit it out when I put it in my mouth."
3.6 Caged and corked bottle. Dark pour with a small head. Served in a new Sam Adams glass. Aroma and taste of some sweet roasted malt with a little hops thrown in for balance. Nothing exceptional but not bad either.
2.9 Poured from a 750ml caged & corked bottle and served in a weizen glass. This beer poured a clear, mahogany brown with a thin head of bubbly tan foam. Decent retention...not much lace. The aroma of the beer was made up of dates, dark fruits, fruity bananna esthers, toasted caramel, and also a bit of alcohol. The flavor included sweet fermented fruits, toasted wheat and caramel, and some light alcohol warmth. The flavor was somewhat dominated by this strange, fruity, vinous note. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with mild carbonation. I was expecting a weizen bock when I opened this, but what was inside the bottle was way off base. I’m all for experimentation, but this was just a bit weird.
3.5 Pours a cloudy yellow with a soapy white head. Sweet aroma with some spices. Taste of wheat, banana, clove, citrus and a bit of alcohol.
3.4 750 ml bottle - Pours a brown color with a 3/4 finger thick off white head. Light spotty lacing. Aroma is mostly esters. Flavor is esters, a touch of malt, and vinious. Light to medium body. A decent beer.
3.9 Corked and caged 750 - $4 off and on sale for $6.99! A little bit of age on this sucker and it’s mellowed and supremely fun. Sweet muddled smell of alcohol and sugar, seeming Belgian yeast notes (though I know it’s not right) and mashed-up fruit components (a little hard to separate grape from berry and whatever else there may be). In for a malt bomb, I think. Pours a dark, rich, pretty amber red, with a rocky, dense, spoonable beige head (gorgeous!). A nice sour vomit touch in the taste, dense fruity malt and a light undercurrent of yeast, but not much. This really has little in common with other Weizenböcke, but that’s not a bad thing – has some Sour and even slightly geuezeesque (did I get enough E’s in there?) notes. Cherries play a supporting role and are absolutely delicious. Dry, sour aftertaste, but not puckering, just gentle and smooth. Light-medium body and smooth, no carbonation. Tastes like something out of Flanders (somewhere between Red and Brown), and that’s a great thing in my book. Flawed technically, but an extremely enjoyable drinking experience, and I easily drained the champagne bottle by myself.
2.5 Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, jerc, mabel, and tupalev - bottle courtesy of J&K. Cloudy mahogany pour with an average off-white head. Oddly - suspiciously - sour aroma; lemon, caramel roast malt and a hint of sour milk. The taste was a whipsaw of lemon/lactic sour and sugary, bitter and pungently yeasty - a bit of a mess - someone suggested it was a little like an "off" light red wine. Solid, fairly thick body, obviously quite acidic, decently carbonated with a long sour linger. I frankly didn’t like it much.
2.5 Bottle shared with Jerc, Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, and Mabel, courtesy of Jerc and Mabel. Hazy golden brown, small white head. Sour fruity aroma. Ok taste - musty fruitiness, some hops. Odd lingering sourness. Maybe a bad bottle or a weird attempt I guess, will seek out again.
2.6 Bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, tupalev, jerc & mabel -- courtesy of jerc. Pours a hazy amber-brown with a small diminishing off-white head. Aroma of metal, light fruity sourness and sweet malt -- not great. Flavour of sour fruit, malt, light spices and phenols. Sour finish. Average bodied, under-carbonated. Pretty disappointing, a failed attempt at the style or a bottle gone bad?
2.6 2008-04-18. Hazy brown body with quick tan head. Lightly fruity tangy aroma, Similar flavour, malt base tangy fruit is bordering on sour especially in the finish. Average palate is surprisingly lightly carbonated given the pop that came out after the cork. Disappointing, perhaps past its prime? Bottle via trade with TheCheeseMan.
3.6 Strong alcohol aroma with a moderate amount of robust malts. Cloudy brown color with a very small head. Mild beginning with a sweet caramel middle and finish. Alcohol noticeable but not over powering. Light creamy mouth feel.
2.7 Flying Dog Weizen Bock 5-2-5-3-12 Sample Tasting - Dark amber with whitish head. Banana, cloves, citrus, wheat, spices, hops, grain round out the aroma and flavors. Decent mouthfeel. Either need more beer or some boudin to go with it.
3.6 Pours a darker reddish brown with a greyish tan head, thinning quickly. Light haze. The nose is sweet with apple cider and very light banana esters. Spices. Some caramel, small brown sugar, light Mission figs. Creamy smooth mouthfeel, small even bubbles and a bit viscous. Sweet apple cider with some spice and alcohol in it. The pepper and cloves vie with the nutmeg and cinnamon, but lose. Alcohol. Not as bad as the ratings suggest. But not a real gem. I’m glad I bought this on super sale. Some toast in the acidic alcoholic finish.
