Flying Fish Abbey Dubbel

Flying Fish Abbey Dubbel

Winner of the silver medal at the 2008 Great American Beer Festival, this Belgian-style Abbey Dubbel is an exceptionally complex beer with many interwoven flavors. This classic-style Abbey beer features an immense head with a fruity nose and a generous body. Malty in the middle, the beer features a clean, almondy dry finish and a slight alcohol warmth. More like a wine than a beer—it has a lot of the qualities of a fine Burgundy.

Beer writer Michael Jackson has praised the Flying Fish Dubbel as “a wonderful example of the style.”

3.6 Pours dark caramel with a nice tan head. Subtle aroma of spices, dark fruit. Taste some banana and raisin, nice malt backbone. On the sweeter side but nicely done.
4.3 4/29/19 With A celebrating due date and just hanging out. Nose is warm Belgian yeast & dark fruit. Taste is deep & warm with lots of clovey-yeast and more stone fruit. Med sweet with a dry-ish finish. Palate is fluffy with very good carbonation and leaves A dry yeasty finish. Overall, amazing dee m, warm dubbel. Even better than I remembered!!
3.3 Pour from bottle. Clear brown color. Toasted malt nose. Surprisingly tasty.
3.4 12 ounce bottle. Copper, brown color. Small bubbly beige head. Sweet toasted malt nose has phenolic notes. Sweet fruity malt flavor has yeasty notes. Cocoa, nutty malt middle. Earthy yeastiness in finish, with alcohol warmth. Somewhat pale in comparison to the real Belgian examples. Good nonetheless.
4.2 Flying Fish Dubbel - This beer is complex, yet straight forward. Typically it is difficult to find a good Dubbel that is not an import, if you find that this is the case for you I would recommend this you look no further. This Belgian Style Beer is a beautiful caricature of its inspiration. with 9.1 IBU’s this Beer is SWEET, very chocolaty, and malty. Its Dark Amber in color with a 1 finger vanilla colored head. The nose of the beer is very nutty and smooth. The carbonation is somewhat light but it only ads to the charm. At 7.2& ABV I has enough kick to to keep you coming back.
5.0 Great flavor of beer
3.5 I drink this a decent amount cause my wife likes the beer. So, when I am making a mix 6 and it’s available I throw it in. At this point, I’m rating it in a flight at the brewery. It’s a slightly too sweet and too clean American version, but neither too much. Lots of herbal and phenolic yeastiness counteracting it. It’s a bit much in draft but nice in a bottle that finally made it to a mix-a-six rack after a few months at a store.
2.8 Bottle - 1st beer at 38 and 99th Abbey Dubbel tick. pours brown white head - nose/taste of caramel, grape, bubblegum and sugar - medium body
3.4 12 oz single bottle from Total Wine & More - Gilbert, AZ. Clear, deep amber appearance with a lasting tan head. Aroma of fruity esters, caramel malt, light toffee and a touch red wine. Similar flavor, rich, fruity, vinous and sweet with a light spicy bitterness and a lingering finish hinting at Belgian yeast. Medium body with ample carbonation. Solid.
3.6 Bottle from total wine. Pours clear light brown with only a dusting of a head. Aroma is chocolate, caramel malts. Taste is black cherries, chocolate malts, caramel, but overwhelming dark fruit, especially cherry. Almost a peanut buttery finish as well. Quite tasty.
3.6 From a 12 oz bottle. Pours a clear mahogany with an ecru head. Aroma of caramel and toffee. Flavors same with some butterscotch. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
3.3 A Belgian yeast nose, pours an orange caramel color, sweetish taste of caramel and Belgian yeast. Medium body with a lasting Belgian yeast finish.
3.5 Pretty tasty, a bit of the Belgian flavor in the back but not over powering.
3.4 Aroma of caramel, malts, some toffee, and some raisin. Crystal clear orange brown amber color, large tan head quickly fades. Rich sweet malt, up front. Quite sweet. Notes of toffee, some dark fruits, and a tiny hint of funk from the yeast. Bitterness is dry and even, mutes sweetness nicely. Medium to light mouth feel, slightly watery. Solid
3.5 Would have liked a little bit more spiciness in the taste on this one. However, it’s a pretty good brew with some banana notes and plenty of toasty, sweet. Overall, it’s good and will leave your mouth sticky sweet.
3.9 Pours from bottle a dark amber with red highlights and a fizzy off-white head that disappears quickly, leaving lace and skim. Nose is raisin, burnt waffles, candied cherries. The palate follows with a mix of dark fruits, brown sugar, figs, whiffs of clove and coriander, mild yeast, roast malt. All these notes revolve around a caramel core, which carries through a short finish. Body is light medium with pleasant mouthfeel; carbonation is sprightly without being forceful. The alcohol shows up primarily as a mild warmer. This isn’t quite Belgian in accomplishment, but it’s a tasty, affordable and easy drinking substitute.
3.4 It pours dark amber with ruby hues. It has a light brown head. It has a malty sweet aroma that is rich and complimented by dried cherries and apple aromas. It is malt forward rich with raisins, dried fruit, bits of cherries; that finishes sweet. It has a light-heavy feel to it with low alcohol warmth. Overall the balance it slightly towards the malt with a full range of dark fruit flavors with the raisins being pronounced.
2.9 Bottle pour..medium caramel brown color..nose is mostly brown sugar..sweetness..raisins..mouthfeel is a bit thin..not really complex..some off burnt almond flavors with a lingering spicy character...
3.1 Pours a cola brown with a thin white head which is gone in a hurry.....aroma of raisins, sweet malt, honey.....taste is light on the Belgian funk, slight earth, raisin, a tad thin, then disappearing into a sllght bitter spice.
4.5 6flight tap at Geraghty’s Pub, Burlington, nj. Ruby red, Malty nose with hints of roasted caramel, sweet malty goodness.
3.5 On tap at Philadelphia International. Ruby dark in the glass. Nose is malty sweet. Palate is all Belgian. Sweet malty goodness. Syrupy. Not cloying. Not as complex as I hoped, but decently balanced to style beer.
2.3 Dark ruby with white head. Nose of fruits, nuts and malt. Tastes of dark fruits, banana and some sweet malt. Low on bitterness, if any at all. Light body.
3.4 Pretty generic for the style, taste is about what you’d expect. Some banana and clove, honey malt, and I get a bit of bubblegum too. Not great, but certainly drinkable. And only $8.99 for a six pack; you won’t find too many Dubbels for that price.
3.5 Cor de um caramel queimado, espuma nao persistente mas boa carbonatacao. Maltes tostados e fermento evidente. Facil de beber
3.3 Pours dark ruby with a light off white head, not quite tan, the aroma is candy, spicy, dark fruits like figs. The flavor is sweet with fig, candy, dark candy, spices, clove and some banana. Overall, nice balance alcohol is found in back end. Qould drink.again.
4.6 Very good aroma and flavor. Has a sort of grainy Barleywine nose to it. Belgian candy taste and pretty strong alcohol scent.
2.4 Bottle shared at a tasting at Alexei and Raphaela’s. Thanks Trapped. Headless clear brown. A little roasty, some burnt caramel aroma. Sweet burnt caramel taste. Fizzy, light-bodied, a little alcoholic finish. Feels amateurish.
3.2 Bottle to shaker glass, pours clear red-brown, quick off white head, light lacing and slight retention. Aroma caramel and raisin. Taste is sweet, slightly sour. Medium body, moderate carbonation, soupy mouth feel. Finishes long. Tasting notes of raisin, brown sugar, toffee, licorice, allspice and bread. Not as sour as I’d like but a solid, interesting take on a Dubbel.
3.5 Dark chestnut colored beer with a thin off white head that disappears immediately. Nose of brown sugar, stewed prunes, and toffee. Flavor starts with a surprising nutty almond flavor that gives way to raisins, caramel, and a subtle sourness. Finishing with a mild bitterness, this is a tasty beer.
1.6 Bottle. Brown/copper body with a short off-white head, rapidly diminishing. Mild aroma caramel. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Thin to medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation. No Belgian yeast characteristics. Taste of plastic and chemicals dominate resulting in no chance for the malts to come through (as they should in a dubbel). Slick and oily on tongue in the finish. Meh. Any good qualities? Not in this drain pour of a beer.
