Flying Fish Extra Pale Ale

An original American pale ale, our XPA highlights the subtle, sophisticated flavors and aromas of our Midwestern two-row malt and imported aromatic and Munich malts. Pacific Northwest hops create an extremely balanced beer with a beautiful straw color. And thanks to you baseball fans, the XPA is the best-selling local craft beer at the Phillies ballpark.

2.4 Wood, fruity hop aroma with notes of bread. Appearance is gold with an average head with below average head retention. Flavor consists of fruity, woody/spicy hop flavor with notes of bread and caramel. The beer is oxidized. Mouthfeel is light and carbonation is medium. Overall, it's a below average pale ale. The beer tastes oxidized and there is still 2 months left till it "expires." Plus it tastes watery.
3.2 Pours orange-yellow with a one finger white head with decent lacing. Aroma is of biscuit malts, pine, sweet malts, and some metallic notes. Taste is about the same as the aroma with the addition of some vanilla, herbal hops, and grass. Has a medium-light bod with a semi watery mouthfeel and a slightly bitter, medium-short finish. Overall, a rather mediocre XPA.
3.1 Clear yellow appearance with a small white head and light lacing. Subtle biscuit-like aroma with some herbal hops in the background. Flavor of toasted malts with a modest amount of spicy, herbal hops. Medium to light bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel and an average length finish.
2.6 A pretty mild-mannered pale ale. Goes down easy, not overly hoppy or piney.
2.7 "another average offering - nothing bad. nothing stands out. a little cereal malt, a little sweet, and a bit of floral and bittering hops, but not very aromatic."
2.9 Bottle. Muted nose. Average carbonation. Straw yellow color - not my favorite. All beer flavors are mild and muted. No off-odors or flavors. Pleasant, but definitely not one I’d buy in the future.
2.8 Faint caramel malt aroma. Taste is a plain mild hops with a bit if a grass malt taste. Nothing special.
2.8 Pours an almost clear golden yellow with a fluffy head. Some peach aroma. Taste has some bitterness with a dry finish. A bit too bitter to be a refreshing summer ale.
3.2 Draft at zin burger Poured hazy yellow with thin layer of head. Wel . Balanced hop profile, easy drinker
3.0 Drought. Rich yellow with whitish small foamy head, doughy aroma, low carbonation, slightly bitter taste with hoppy flavor, abrupt finish. Not very remarkable.
3.5 I’m not sure why this has such poor ratings. I thought it was a better than average pale ale with a good floral aroma, some spicy sweet hops bite and a medium body.
3.7 DATE TASTED: May 4, 2014... GLASSWARE: Howard’s Pub pint... OCCASION: toilet--replaced; lawn--cut; bathroom--painted = beer time!... APPEARANCE: creamy white head that attractively flairs; dark golden straw-colored, evenly effervescent body; drains evenly... AROMA: vibrant citric (mostly orange with some melon and pear as well) and floral notes with some light caramel malts--accessible and intriguing... PALATE: soft, lagerish body,, equally creamy and thinly taut--sessionable and perfectly at home...TASTE: Flying Fish continues to leave me a happy consumer, as this pale ale a strong profile fits within the genre well and yet is memorable enough to e sought again--maybe not at the bottle shop, but in a restaurant or bar...
2.6 Really wanted to like this, but it’s weak, sour, and off-putting. Just nothing to write home about.
2.3 very basic lightly coloured beer, no aroma to praise of. Lighter mouthfeel, minimal hop taste and modest drinkability.
2.0 Tap: Clear gold color with a white head and some ring lacing. Lemony aroma with a mostly grainy malt taste. Watery feel. Waste of my money and a lame excuse for a pale ale.
2.7 12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured clear golden with a nice white head, leaving lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma is pretty light floral hops and grain. Taste is a bit to watery for my taste, a combination of malts and citrus notes. OK Beer.
3.4 Perfect appearance. Excellent lacing and a perfect clear brew. Taste is sweet with a minimally hoppy finish. This has a nice palate with a great floral finish.
3.3 It's a nice emphasis on the pale. It's mild and smooth with very little bitterness nor bite. Got a nice malt taste.
3.2 Bottle pours pale gold with white head. Tangerine, pine, straw, floral. Lightly bitter and sweet. Medium body, light carbonation.
2.8 Draft at the source. Crystal clear pale yellow color, bright white edge head. Aroma of light hay. Taste is floral and slighty sour.
2.9 12 oz bottle with a imprinted best by date of 10 Dec. 2013. A light APA, with a relatively (i.e., for style) light body, light aroma, and light flavor. Good medium+ carbonation with a dry, mildly bitter finish.
2.1 Has a pale yellow pour with thick white head. Doesn’t have a strong aroma but some hints of grass and malt. Taste is closer to a pilsner with some malt, yeast, and light spices and lemon. Smooth beer with a very light bitter aftertaste from the malt.
2.6 Poured from a tap at the brewery. Light golden color. Tastes almost of a pilsner rather than a pale ale
3.9 Appearance: light clear gold, with one finger of bright white head that shrinks to a thin collar, with minimal lacing. Aroma: saltine crackers, white pepper, a little grass, hint of lemon zest. Taste: as the aroma indicates. Finish: light, crisp, pleasantly dry, with a surprising floral note coming out. Notes: First encountered as "Blue Pig Tavern Ale" in Cape May, New Jersey. Thought it was a kolsch, it was so light, delicate, and pleasantly dry. Extremely drinkable and enjoyable. I consider this a go-to session beer for nearly any food pairing.
2.6 Bottle into a ale glass. Pour is a light yellow with next to no head at rest. Aroma is sweet hay but very low. Taste is more pilsner than pale ale. Finish is a light hop wash. This is a good summertime beer, outside sunshine and a grill.
3.2 Picked up a bottle while traveling in MD. Not sure why it’s called an "Extra" Pale Ale but, overall, I enjoyed it. Not very hoppy and almost sweet. I thought it was a refreshing and satisfying drink - had some characteristics of a lager rather than an ale. I’d buy it again if it were available to me.
2.9 Draft at Baggataway. Pours a clean gold with thin white head and sea foam lace. Nose of hay, biscuit, grass. Medium body, hoppy grass flavor, some bitterness on the finish. Like a hoppy pilsner.
2.4 Tap. Golden pour with a finger of head. Grain, sparking water, skight sourness, not a lot of aroma. Strong carbonation. Light body and minimal but grainy and bubbly finish.
2.6 I tried this at a restaurant in Cherry Hill and found it to be a little bland. It really tastes more like an English bitter with a little more hop. It is very light in color, with a decent head. One was all I needed and I moved on.
2.6 Pours a yellow color with foamy white head. Aroma is mostly grain. Flavor is grainy as well, just a slight amount of bitterness. Average and mostly uninteresting.
