Foothills / Duck-Rabbit / Olde Hickory Olde Rabbit's Foot

One third of the wort used to make this splendid stout came from each of three North Carolina Breweries: Olde Hickory Brewery, The Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery, and Foothills Brewing.

These were combined and aged in very rare 23 year old bourbon barrels. Olde Rabbit’s Foot Imperial Stout is rich and complex; as satisfying to drink as it was to make. We three craft brewers hope you will enjoy the very special Stout as much as we have.

Brewed with honey and with cocoa nibs added and aged in 23 year old Pappy Van Winkle barrels.

Cheers! - Jamie, Paul & Steven

2009 version brewed at Olde Hickory, later versions at Foothills.

4.3 2009 version shared with the tasters choice crew. Thick black heavy oak and bourbon with nice coffee and chocolate undertones. Fantastic beer!
4.2 Bottle pours tick black with thin tan head, Wonderful bourbon aroma with underlying malts. Taste bourbon, chocolate, malts and oak. Thick rich palate with alcohol burn. Finish prolonged oak, roast and booze. Top notch bourbon barrel aged stout, the only drawback was a little loo much oak for my taste.
4.3 Sample from a bottle. 2012 vintage. Completely opaque pitch black color. Little light brown head. Couple bits of lace. Vanilla, brownie aroma, very nice. Really good big chewy bigger body. Light carbonation, lightly dry finish. Bigger bitter taste, light alcohol warming. Very tasty. Little sweet, light barrel-y spice character. Big dark chocolate, light coffee roast. Awesome, delicious big beer. Super.
4.0 2009 bottle thanks to kp: pours an oily opaque with a thin beige head. Has a sweet dark caramel and chocolate malty nose with some vanilla bourbon oak and a hint of tart fruits. Starts with pretty good fullness with sweet dark malts and nice bourbon complexity before a drier dark chocolatey finish with a hint of tartness. Pretty well balanced and seems to have aged alright.
3.8 Bottle in GTMW line - Pours black with a thin tan head. Nose is caramel, bourbon, butterscotch, and dark sweet malt. Taste is malty and sweet with cherries, ashy roast, and a milky finish with some sweet cane sugar. Slick and thick in the mouth. Really tasty.
4.1 Bottle shared at GTMW line, very nice! Pours black with a thick brown head and lacing, the aroma is really sweet but has a ton of chocolate, fudge and vanilla all together, some of the oak and bourbon comes through as well, the flavor has a ton of chocolate and vanilla, the bourbon really shows as well but it’s really smooth and well done, really good stuff, enjoyed this a ton.
4.2 Bottle @ home ... from jarvit ...It pours pitch black with a small creamy tan head.... The aroma is bourbon, coffee, oak and strong licorice.... The flavor is roasted malt, bourbon, coffee, vanilla, oak and chocolate.....
3.8 Midnight black, alcohol legs, minimal head. Smells amazing. Incredibly sweet. Loads of vanilla and brown sugar with cane sugar. Very decadent like a chocolate mousse pie. Taste is extremely sweet. Muted bitterness, very little booze. Vanilla is prevalent with tons of smoky charred oak. Very nice but not as bourbon heavy as I expected.
4.0 Sampled at the Raleigh Rare and Vintage Festival 2013. Now this was very delicious. Clear very dark brown pour with no percievable head. Sweet bourbon and boozy vanilla notes compliment the woodiness quite nicely. This is a perfect example of how barrel aging is suppose to be done!
4.2 bottle. pours lack with gorgeous tan head. big wood, sweet chocolate aroma. taste is medium body, lots of bourbon but not boozy, lots of burnt sugar and caramel too.
4.2 Pours a dark black with a tan head of foam. Aroma is boozy with notes of graham crackers, and chocolate. Taste is sweet and a bit hot at the end. Very tasty stuff.
4.2 Draft. Really nice bourbon flavor. Quite yummy. Not much head very aromatic. Goes down smooth. Awesome blend
4.5 22 oz. bottle, sent from Pabobcat (thanks a lot, David), pours black with a small beige head. Aroma is very complex, with moderate bourbon, cocoa nibs, an vanilla - the bourbon quality is what amplifies the complexity. Flavour is extremely complex, with lush, deep bourbon barrels from the Pappy Van Winkle barrels, cocoa nibs, a touch of vanilla, an low-to-moderate sweetness. Quite rich and deep, with extremely high complexity. Fairly medium bodied for a big BA impie stout, though very full flavoured - could use some more body but that is a very minor complaint. Really reminds of Goose Island Rare BCS, as that’s the only other Pappy barrel stout I’ve had thus far, though this one isn’t as complex. A most fantastic, highly complex sipper.
3.9 Bomber via Lubiere (merciful), shared with Mike et al, cool, tulip. Very deep brown with a so-so mocha head. Huge chocolate, molasses, licorice, vanilla, some bourbon and wood character, inky, thick and ricb, kinda fruity, so big, a little alcohol. Medium-full body with fine effervescence. Quite a bit of bourbon and wood, molasses, tons of chocolate, licorice and molasses notes, some booze, really thick and rich; sweet with decent bitterness, a fair bit of warm, almost stinging alcohol and a long, molasses, slightly briney finish.
4.4 Very very well balanced. Little to no head. Aroma is hypnotizing and the bourbon flavor will age well. I've got 2 that I'm gonna save for a few years.
3.8 Incredible changing aroma and thin black pour lead to a complex taste with almost fruit tones that melts into a lingering and pleasant mouthfeel.
3.8 65cl, Vintage 2011 (brewed at Foothills Brewing), exclusive American collab. brew, with honey, thx to Secret Santa!, complex Stout, roasted/sweet and slightly alcoholic/fruity, not to heavy, balanced, hazy, small head, very good brew, yet very expensive!
5.0 So far in my ale journeys, the 2010 edition of ORF has been the perfect brew. This tasted like it was the best of the imperial stouts that Foothils, Olde Hickory, & Duck Rabbit had to offer in a perfect blend. I was able to enjoy it in bottles and on draft, and to be honest, I couldn’t make a distinction between draft & bottle form as to which was better (and that’s uncommon). The bourbon comes through just right in both aroma and flavor. This was one of the 1st BBA brews that I had, and it has been the benchmark for the many that I’ve enjoyed since. I can’t wait to partake in the 2012 edition!
3.8 A-- Poured black. Just slight bits of red tint at the top of the beer. One finger light brown head that quickly fell to film and then disappeared. Just a small bit of lacking. S-- Good nose. Bourbon, oak, Carmel, Vanilla, Chocolate and some earthy hops. Really nice staying power of the nose. Maybe best part of this beer. T-- Bourbon, Vanilla, Chocolate and more earthy hops. Good taste to this. M-- Slick and oily. Body is a bit thin but quite good. Not as good as taste and nose are. Spot on carbonation and feel to this. Really felt the barrel added a lot to the base beer. O-- Not as good as BCS rare but a good substitute. Well hidden alcohol and a lot of flavor to this. Only real failing is the body, as a bit thin I thought. Still a good BA beer and if can not get BCS Rare a very good substitute with the PVW barrel.
3.9 Bottle shared by bmanning and another by Lunch. Thanks Ben & Paul! A: This collaborative effort appears a rich, dark brown, nearing black. There is about an eighth inch of beige head that leaves random traces of lacing about the glass. S: The aroma is bold, with scents of bourbon and roasted malt. No surprises here. T: The flavor is the best aspect of the beer, as it should be. Olde Hickory, Duck-Rabbit, and Foothills play well together. Everything comes together nicely, with roasted malt and bourbon flavors bold, yet balanced. The barrel presence is very strong and forward throughout. Complex and tasty. M: The feel is medium bodied, with a slight sweetness and alcohol presence throughout. D: I would definitely have this again. Tasty stuff. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-20-2010
4.0 Beer Bloggers Conference 2012 Dark black in color, dark brown head. This was a thick bourbon barrel flavor and aroma mixed with chocolate and coffee flavors and aroma. Big big beer this was.
3.8 22 oz bottle. It pours a very dark brown color with a brown (almost purple?) head. The aroma delivers on everything mentioned in the description. Tons of chocolate along with noticeable sweet honey, brown sugar, vanilla and oak. Extremely rich smelling. The flavor is powerfully sweet and surprisingly tangy with chocolate, black coffee, honey, prunes and some nice bourbon and wood near the finish. Not much roast in this one, and its a bit sweet with a weird tang that throws the flavor a bit off for me. Still a very tasty and quaffable brew.
4.1 Sample at the Central OH BA Tasting at From The Vine on 06/02/2012: The beer pours black with a medium light brown head. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla and coffee. Rich body with flavors of mocha, bourbon, vanilla and roasted malt. The finish is roasty with a boozy cocoa aftertaste. Good beer all around.
4.1 Pours dark black with no head. Aroma of bourbon, bourbon and more bourbon. Taste follows the nose, chocolate, bourbon and slight honey in the finish. This is a really nice beer, I love the bourbon in it. Smooth for what it is. I could drink this all day.
4.1 Bomber traded by Dak I think. Nose has bit of oxidation, then cherries and fuzzy warm alcohol. Big rich tart sweet and long dark smooth. Bits of coffee and vanilla and dark fruit. Very nice.
4.2 Bottle at Damico’s. Pours black with nice head that lingers. Nose of vanilla bean, oak, leather and molasses. First sip is nice sutle coffee nots, with slight milk anf bittersweet chocolate. finish is nice with a coco flavor like a Wendy’s frosty.
4.4 Originally reviewed: 3/25/12. Vintage 2011. Missed the release of this one last year, but I was able to score a bottle from an in-person trade at the SC release this year. Bottle split and shared with a buddy. Poured my allotment into an Allagash chalice. Pours a deep rich black. A luscious inch-thick tan head rests atop. Lace cascades down the glass edge after each sip. Pretty beer. The aroma on this one is superb. Big oaky vanilla notes, faint astringent ethanol, roasted malts. Really rich and pleasing. The body is silky smooth, but deep. Carbonation gives a little spritz, but it still mellows out on the palate. Vanilla sweetness greets me at first sip. Smooth bourbon character with mild wet woody finish. Chocolate roast noted, but this gets edged out by more bourbon and oak. Sweet aftertaste. This was really good and actually surprised me. A really good BB-Stout that I will now make the effort to acquire at the release each year.
4.0 Aroma: chocolate, roast malts, whiskey, alcohol, malt sweetness. Pours pitch black, tan head with good retention, leaves a bit of lacing. Flavor is more chocolate, good punch of whiskey/barrel notes, roast malts and some coffee, rich malt sweetness, medium bitterness. Full bodied with medium carbonation. Very tasty.
4.6 Bottle. Highly anticipated collab beer using Old Hickory, Sexual Chocolate, and Duck Rabbit Imperial then aged in 23 yr old Pappy Van Winkle barrels. Aromas of toasted coconut, cocoa, marshmallow, and some rich whiskey in the back. Reminded me of the toasted coconut marshmallows. Taste is chocolate, bourbon, rye, marshmallow, cocoa nib bitter chocolate, and an aftertaste of coffee. Rich and complex wood notes were evident as it warmed. Amazing stout, smooth as can be.
4.8 2011 version: Wonderful nose that only a pappy barrel can give off. Marshmallow, my best friend :) vanilla, oak, little bit of coffee and huge malt. The taste is super sweet and malty, very smooth and sweet, but just the right amount. This is in my radar as best beer of 2011. Wish it was easier to obtain.
