3.8 Bottle 65 cl. Pours a clear, dark brown with a warm, reddish hue. Lively, creamy and lacing light brown head. Very heavy Bourbon aromas, not boozy or anything, but intense. Medium-bodied, subtle roast, some vanilla and the rest is all Bourbon. Good thing I love Bourbon.... Very drinkable. 220915
4.0 number 2500 rating Pours a dark brown color with a dense creamy brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of bourbon, chocolate, leafy hops and faint smoky notes. The taste is roasted malts, bourbon, faint nutty notes, caramel, leafy hops and chocolate. A light tartness as well. Medium bodied.
3.9 22 oz. bottle shared by Willrunforbeer, huge thanks on this one! We believe this is a 2013 vintage. Thicker tan head sitting on the dark brown liquid. Wow! The aroma is a nice level of bourbon mixed with chocolate malt. The flavor has what I would say is Jack Daniels. Mild Jack but Jack Daniels never-the-less. Secondary notes of tobacco leaves and pumpernickel bread. Finishes real clean for a BBA brew, very light earthiness after the sip. Nice stuff.
4.1 Bomber. This is likely from 2013. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Amazing chocolate, vanilla, bourbon aroma. Flavor follows, smooth dark chocolate, raisin, vanilla, bourbon, oak. Slight astringency in the finish.
4.2 Bottle. Black w thin head. Strong oak and vanilla aroma and taste. Bitter chocolate. Sharp and dry. Very fine.
3.6 Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a huge creamy-foamy tan head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was strong bourbon, cocoa, tangy, malty, vanilla and a bit of chocolate syrup. The flavor was bourbon, sweet toasty malts, honey, vanilla, more bourbon and an odd off presence underneath. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Interesting but I was a bit disappointed.
3.4 12/17 re-rate. bottle almost 4 years old. lowered from 3.5. this is not a top 50 porter. tooooo thin. and not much flavor.....................bottle to glass. aged 1+ years. disappointed in this one. slightly over roasted and thinner than I wanted it to be - not a depth of flavor. somce chocolate but lacked any bourbon barrel additives for me.
3.8 Bottle from my buddy in Asheville. Poured into small snifters and shared with Dani and Brian at the Pig. Pours a deep amber brown with very little head. Mild ringing. Aroma is graham cracker, brown sugar, vanilla, cookie dough, chocolate chips, and bread. The taste was chocolate chip cookie dough, vanilla, brown sugar, toffee, slight barrel, and chocolate. Finish is flavorful and fairly light. Medium to light in body. I like a little more full body on this style but that’s my only complaint. Very nice flavor profiles.
3.8 Refrigerated brown bomber poured into a snifter. Black with dark brown highlights and big light brown head. Aroma is big vanilla, medium body, medium carbonation, and pretty good small-bubble lacing. Taste is vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, some caramel, and hints of oak. Lots of flavor, nice vanilla aroma, nice amount of barrel for me, one of my favorite porters.
3.6 22oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter. Pours dark brown and sits near black and opaque in the glass. Large frothy head is semi-durable and leaves a fairly full coat of lacing on the glass. Appealing aroma features BBL, dark roasted grains, and dark fruits. Flavor: BBL and fainter dark bread and a hint of vanilla. Too much bourbon flavor in the finish and aftertaste, but then others will find this attractive no doubt. Drinks big despite the modest 5.8% ABV.
3.7 Pours a deep brown with fluffy tan head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma is nice barrel notes, vanilla and chocolate over oak, hint of musty funk. Taste is less of the odd, more of a nice porter with good barrel qualities. Thin mouth, hint of soy, light bitterness. Pretty solid.
3.8 Draft. Pours a medium to dark brown color with a medium brown head. Aroma of toasted malts, Bourbon, vanilla. Flavor is sweet, bourbon, oak, vanilla. Delicious.
4.1 On tap at heaven and ale. One of the best bourbon barrel beers I have had. Very smooth. Can definitely taste the bourbon.
4.7 On tap at the brewer. This one goes up to 11. So dark, almost black. Aroma is mild, doesn’t boast about what’s to come. Very heavy in the mouth and full of flavor. Amazing taste. You can definitely taste the bourbon. Foothills Brewing makes an amazing porter to start with and this only builds on that. Absolutely amazing.
3.8 22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours black with a big, beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, some bourbon and oak and vanilla, some chocolate, light coffee, and light bitterness. Flavor the same with a nice blend of the bourbon and the base porter. Average to smoother texture. A solid barrel-aged beer.
3.7 roasty, earthy, vanilla, smoke, tan foam, brown, light sweetness, medium body,
3.3 Draft in Charleston. Menu says "pappy van winkle barrel aged porter". Nose of strong alcohol. Pitch black pour with a medium sized white head. Taste is immediately boozy as well. Not much else besides boost and chocolate here. Good but the porter is masked by the booze and the booze is noticeable. And by noticeable I mean in your face.
3.7 Bottle:   Big bourbon aroma, dark brown, nice head and lacing.   Not a real complex Porter, mainly Bourbon with hints of vanilla and graham cracker.   Not too thick, body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Not real complex.   Flavorful, but needs to be a bit more complex and more body.   Seems like a lighter example.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a dark amber with small beige head leaving spotty lacing along the glass. The aroma is strong roast, caramel, wood, and light smoke. Thin mouthfeel with sweet roast, dark chocolate, caramel and lingering sweet finish. Good.
4.0 22oz bottle for $6.99 at D’Vine’s in AdMo. $7 bomber of bourbon barrel something. Good value if nothing else. Pours a watery but opaque black with some lacing, off white head. Nose is nice, not too much barrel, definite caramel and vanilla, most toast and bread crust than a standard barreled beer, some dark fruit, plums and prunes mostly. Flavor is so well balanced, vanilla, caramel, a hint of mocha, some toast, a little raisin, a little prune, some coconut. Not boozy or hot. A bit oily on the end, but very very smooth.
3.4 Pours a deep umber color with a finger of khaki foam. Lots of roasted chocolate, vanilla, bourbon heat and something strange is also happening, almost oily buttery coconut notes. Lots of bourbon... a touch thin.
3.6 Barrel is well integrated. Pours clear mahogany with good head and lacing. Some sweetness, comes together ok but not a huge body underneath. Tap at Churchkey.
3.9 Location: Draft at Mekong, 5/2/14 Aroma: The nose is full of roasted malts, chocolate, bourbon/oak, and some vanilla Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with a beige head and average lace Flavor: The chocolate comes out in the flavor, lots of roast too, bourbon is in balanced Palate: The body is medium-plus, it drinks pretty nicely, with a smooth, light dryness Overall Impression: Found this one to be a very tasty offering. I can’t speak for how it comes to the non-barrel aged version, but I can say that the barrel flavors play nicely with the chocolate and roasted malt flavors.
2.9 so much better barrel aged versus the standard version, but still not very exciting.
2.9 22 oz bottle, thanks to jtclockwork. Dark brown pour with no meaningful head. A fair bit of vanilla in the nose. Hugely astringent, almost sour; oaky, a bit tannic. Ash, chalk, almost undrinkably harsh. In fact ... yeah, ended up in the drain after choking through 4 ounces. Not crazy about this one.
2.5 22 ounce bottle poured into a Belgian snifter. Pours a thin-like consistency with brownish black body and a finger of light tan head. Nice webby/spotty lacing. Aromas of sweet bourbon, dark chocolate, vanilla, light oak. Tasting notes of coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruit including berries, bitter roast, some oak, hardly any bourbon. Some burnt notes on the backend and aftertaste. Medium-thin body with a dry and slightly warm finish. Creamy mouthfeel, medium carbonation. The bourbon didn’t seem to pull through on the taste. Turns into a mess as it warms plus a hotter finish.
3.8 Wow - this is a great tasting porter! Nice chocolate, but not that super-sweet chocolatey, aroma. Lovely flavor, nice feeling...at first. As I imbibe a few more mouthfuls, flavor turns a bit toward the overly sour side.
3.5 Pours very thin lookin as I expected from a >6% ABV porter. Palate is also thin but I’m impressed by the bourbon and vanilla flavors that come through here! Probably a my second favorite porter behind Alewerks bourbon porter (which is my fav porter by a large margin). This is a good, easy drinking beer with flavor but it leaves me longing for a real thick and loucious bourbon imp stout. Still yet to find a reason to ever go for porters but this does help the case a little.
3.8 On draft at Trio in Kill Devil Hills NC. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of licorice and chocolate. Flavors of oak and vanilla. Medium bodied. Bitter roast finish.
3.8 Bomber on 2/21/14. Pours dark not-quite-black with a thick off white head. Aroma is amazing. Bourbon, oak, vanilla, chocolate. Taste is slightly sour, fruity upfront followed by nice chocolate, caramel, vanilla that stays for a bit then ends with some burnt notes. Body is a little thin, dry. Overall a great beer.
