Fort George Vortex IPA

Fort George Vortex IPA

India pale ale’s were designed to withstand the long voyage to India. Today, it seems one has to design the IPA strong and hoppy enough to make the trip back as well. Vortex IPA is the Fort George’s first foray into this strong beer category. Our IPA is made with generous additions of cascade, Simcoe and Palisade hops throughout the brewing, fermentation and conditioning phases, balanced with heaps of organic pale malt. We designed this to not rip your taste buds off your tongue, but rather vigorously stimulate them and your palate into a lupulin-ecstacy of pleasure. During the cross-country truck trip our brewery made to find it’s home in Astoria, it was nearly scattered to the cornfields of Nebraska by a tornado. We try to capture some of nature’s intensity in every pint. IBU 97

4.0 1 pint can - it pours a mostly clear orangey amber color with a thick, soapy bubble off white head. Mouthwatering aroma of hops bursting with citrus notes, pine, grass, melon and a hint of eucalyptus. Quite tasty... citrus peel, bitter grassiness, pine resin, cereal malts and lingering bitter finish.
4.4 As with a lot of Oregonian things, Fort George's Vortex IPA is firmly rooted in the natural world. This IPA is basically overflowing with outdoorsy hop character. Orange color. It's grassy, piney, floral, resinous, and earthy. The flavor profile is a little more nuanced. There's some citrus and herbal character, but you get a lot more of the aforementioned earth. There's even more tree influence, too. Evergreen, spruce, and eucalyptus. Bitterness is assertive. If you like Pacific Northwestern hops you'll find a hell of lot of them in here.
3.8 Solid IPA. A. Its earthy a bit. Light flavors. Solid above average classic IPA.
3.2 On tap. copper color, lacing head. decent hop aroma. hop resin quality, some citrus, grass. Dry and bitter, some malt but the hop character is more prominent. solid ipa.
3.7 On tap at Toms, Cannon Beach. Pours cloudy orange amber, white head. Aroma is big sweet citrus, berries, biscuit, caramel malt. Flavor is sweet blueberry, citrus, sugary caramel, bitter pine. Medium bodied, solid hoppy offering
3.6 Tall can from Elizabeth Station shared with wife. Pours a hazy amber with a slightly tan huge head. Aroma is caramel, biscuit malt, some candied citrus notes. Taste is similar with some slight smokey notes and a little bit dirty piney bitterness aftertaste. Not bad.
3.5 On tap at Ft. George. Poured a golden color with a smaller sized head. Citrus with some pine.
3.8 From tap at The Lovecraft, Portland. Aroma is resinous hops with lots of pine resin, ripe tropical fruits, malt, touch of caramel, grapefruit. Flavour is sweetish and medium bitter. Body is medium. Ripe fruity and resinous with some sweetness, very fine IPA.
4.7 Had the beer during the 2016 Kompaan Bloedbroeder festival. The beer looks delicious. It has some typical IPA looks. The color is a light orangy yellow, with a nice cloudiness. On top of the beer a nice little layer of white foam is formed. The bulk collapses quickly, leaving a thin drape. The smell is amazing. It reminds me of Dublin and the Irish IPA’s I’ve had there. Amazing smell. I smell lovely sweet and lightly sour aroma’s of citrus fruits, including grapefruit and lemon zest, and a nice hint of passionfruit. I immediately feel like I’m in Ireland again, because most Irish pale ales have the same fruity hop characters. The hops are lovely, very aromatic and rich and well balanced. They are full of smell, but gentle. The taste is the same. Irish pale ale all over. There is hoppy grapefruit, passion fruit and other citrus fruits. Also some lovely bitter touches of hops and some ginger. Perfect balance. The palate is fine. Nice and smooth. All in all, a very good IPA. Good job. I love it.
3.4 Super hazy IPA. A bit of a funky nose and flavor. Not real smooth. Wanted more from St George.
3.3 Draught @ Van Moll Brewpub. Clear orange to light amber color, medium sized white to off-white head that lasts for quite a while. Aroma and flavor both have malts, hops, sort of fruity but not the fruitiness I prefer, it reminds me of orange, orangepeel and apricot. Possibly brett as well. Meh.
3.4 Can: Poured golden with white head. Nice hoppy bouquet of floral. Taste was soft drinkable hops.
3.9 Can from Safeway in Astoria. Aroma is pine and citrus. 2" head when poured into a shaker pint. Color was golden straw and very hazy. Taste is very bitter hop flavored with a dry bitter end. Overall a good west coast IPA that I always manage to pick up when I’m in the Portland area.
3.8 Poured from can. Aromas of grapefruit and spruce. Flavors follow roughly the same suit, with a little bit of funk. Caramel maltiness comes through. The bitterness is manageable.
3.7 Slightly hazy deep copper with a foamy large ivory head. Big floral resiny leafy dank aroma with lots of fresh lupulin and a touch of toffee biscuity malt. Crisp and smooth flavor that’s got some toffee and toast like an English IPA, with a touch of earthy grassy and rye-like bitterness. Dry crisp leafy dankness with a little pine and Vienna malt.
3.8 On tap. Pours a copper color with a nice head. Smell is sting sweet hops. Taste is a nice hoppy IPA with a nice smooth finish. A very good IPA.
3.3 Deep copper orange with a white head. Tropical fruits, pine, light oak, caramel malt. Medium body. Medium dry finish with a bitter edge. Starts with loads of promise but continually falls off. Nice overal.
3.5 Appearance: Darker amber. Hazy. Fluffy white head. Nose: primarily pine needle hops with a good portion of tropical fruit. Taste: hop forward with mango and pineapple. Bit of pine needle as well. bright acidity Body: medium and pleasantly carbonated. Parting thoughts: A very nice IPA from fort George

3.7 Rating #1623 - #CBC2015 Beer 8 - Welcome Reception - Clear golden amber pour with a weak, white head that bubbles away to a ring. Aroma is strong with hoppy overtones, grapefruit, citrusy, toasted malt. Taste is more of the same, dry piney bitterness and caramel malts dominating the flavour, with a hint of sweetness. Finish is dry, but balanced and satisfying. Delicious.
