Founders Backstage Series #13: reDANKulous Imperial Red IPA
reDANKulous Imperial Red IPA is a no frills, bold 9.5% ABV India Pale Ale. It pours a pleasing burnt amber with some sweetness due to the Caramalt and roasted barley used in the malt bill. But hops are the true headliner in this elaborate sensory experience. The spicy, piney, tropical complexities of Chinook, Mosaic and Simcoe hops hit you right away with their dank aroma—and they stick around. Take a sip to have your palate simultaneously walloped and caressed in all the right places. Combined, the hops take the beer to 90 IBUs. It’s not just ridiculous. It’s reDANKulous.

Copper with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of toffee, dried fruit and citrus. Sweet fruity and malty flavour with a mild hoppy finish.
3.9Bottle fron beer @ Ambleside browny red good solid off white head can't fault the appearance big caramel nose taste caramel toffee very sweet with a long weed finish nice but a little sweet for me.
3.8Hoppy, piney, dank and malty on the nose. Medium body and avg carb. Taste is malty and crisp with a hint of citrus, tangerine and caramel. Same follows in the aftertaste.
3.7Sattes dunkles Rot im Glas, Cremeschaum. In der Nase erdig, butterig. Im Trunk waldig, erdig, Malz, leicht alkoholisch, wärmend. Hinten Pinien, leicht bitter, holzig.
3.8Une double ipa assez puissante, forte en amertume, forte en alcool (huileuse), forte en rondeur.
3.2Bottle. 10 month old. Dark brown pour with tan head. Aroma has sweet malt and brown sugar. Taste is instantly bitter. Full body. Medium carbonation. No fresh hoppy notes left
4.4Dark brown/red appearance w/ decent head. Legendary aroma.. at first I got splendid hops, but then I got caramel malt. Awesome. Taste is excellent.. hops, malt, caramel. Palate is very balanced.. some carbonation, some thickness.. some bitter. An all-time great for me.
4.1Bottle in Seattle. Thick lacing offwhite head, dark copper brown, light cloudiness. Rich, balanced resin on nose with sticky toffee malt lining. Fantastic sip of rich resin overtones with a bite of brown sugar flavors, and sweetness. Pine resin bitterness snaps everything together. Dangerously drinkable for weight. Delicious.
4.1Very intense and dense IIPA with beautiful aroma, almost can smell it through the closed bottle! Complex but balanced taste bouquet with caramel notes and straw, hay.
Sensation huileuse, chaude, enveloppante. Carbonatation fine, plutôt peu abondante.
Très bonne.
3.6Bottle 0,355. Pours ruby red with large foamy head. Malts, caramel, pine, hops, fruits, some citrus. Medium body and average carbonation.
3.8355ml bottle from Bochka in Moscow. Pours clear dark amber/brown with a medium sized beige head. Aroma is red berries, dank hops, caramel. Taste is caramel, citrus, pine, medium bitterness.
3.6Bottle. Pours a deep dark amber with a medium sized off-white head. Aroma of caramel, pine, fruit and light orange. Flavor of caramel, fruit, pine, grapefruit and some dank hops.
2.4Bottle 33cl bottled June 2017.
Pours red copper, delicate and thick eggshell foam with elegant laces.
Aroma: roasty+++, caramel+, piney+. Surprising weak hop aromas (maybe bottlz is too old).
Flavor: high mouthfeel, roasty ++, caramel+, not much hop flavor. Strong lasting bitterness
4.0Bottle at home. Pours a dark copper with a sizeable head, medium retention. Aroma is lovely, good sweet malt base, caramel, some roasted barley. Complemented by loads of West coast hops. Somewhat fruity, but mostly pine and spice centred hoppiness. Herbal-earthy blueberry touch of mosaic seems noticeable to me. Not surprisingly a big bodied beer. Flavour is therefore rather sweet; caramel is very forwarded and the roasted barley gives it an interesting burnt note. Rather bitter, very hoppy. Pine again very forward, but also a bit fruity, rather herbal and spicy. Finishes long, bitter and burnt, caramelly. Excellent, red Imperial IPA works well (at least if done by founders). I like the burnt touch from the roasted barley a lot.
3.912oz from saveur, bottled 06/2017. Love the style RedIIPA. - luminous copper-ruby pour, dense lightbeige cap. Naturally sweetish pine aroma, boiled down to citrus resin marmelade, pink grapefruit, slightly caramelised yet fresh. A solid whiff of schnaps to back up those 9,5ABV. Streamlined sanded pinewood caramels carry a citrus-hopfresh load (a showcasing of woodsy Chinook, a splash of more affable Mosaic) and go down like hot aluminium. Love the mouthfeel of sanded speciality malts and degré zéro clean yeast, the last base not yet covered by EU covers of this style. Well done heavy hitter to defend Founders' badge post San Miguel partnership.
3.3Pours dark ruby red with a two fingers thick creamy white head.
Aroma is rich of sweet malts, tangerine and light caramel notes.
Taste is balanced bittersweet, honey, caramel and piney hops.
Medium to full body, soft carbonation and sticky texture.
Nice but not the tastiest of its kind.
3.5355 ml bottle from Bumble Inn,Peterborough,bottled 29/06/2017.
Dark amber,translucent.
Nose - burnt caramel,some pine,dank citrus.
Taste - grapefruit, caramel, some resin. Bitter aftertaste. Average DIPA.
3.735 flesjes. Helder donker robijnrood kleur, fijne romige licht bruine schuimkraag. De geur van citrus en karamel. Smaak is zoet, citrus, tofee en licht chocolade. Vol Lichaam, Veel koolzuur.
3.7Aroma - caramel and rich pine hops.
Appearance - has an almost opaque dark copper body. 2+" beige head, that settles slowly and laces well.
Taste - has a rich caramel/rye malt. The hops are piney and somewhat earthy. There is a little oily nature. This is of the classical IPA lineage.
Palate - body is medium, texture oily, carbonation is average, finish is piney and bitter the length is of the longer order.
3.8Bottle from The Bottle Lab, Leek. Pours a clear reddish brown colour with a medium beige head. Aroma of toasted malts, burnt caramel, some pine, soap, orange marmalade, slight grapefruit and subtle spicy, earthy hops. Taste of toasted malts, slight burnt caramel, some red berries, pine, resin, orange marmalade, a little grapefruit and subtle spicy, earthy hops. Full bodied and a sticky texture. A long, dry, marmeladey and resinous hop bitterness in the finish. Hmm, dank aroma and packs a big hoppy punch with a high level of bitterness. Coats the mouth with its high malt bill. Very good.
3.9Pours a two finger light tan head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Deep amber/red color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Piney, citrus hop nose and taste is piney, hints of sweet citrus. High ABV (9.5%) is hidden. $4.99 for a 4-pak 12oz bottles from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.
3.9Pours a beautiful deep, dark amber coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells of sweet, caramel, bready malt and citrus, piney hops, with a hint of toffee and red berries. Taste is complex, but a little too overshadowed by a very noticeable boozyness. Nevertheless, a nice balance of sweet caramel malt and citrus hops. Notes of toffee, dark berries, citrus, grass and pine, with a strong bitterness. This reminds me a LOT of Arrogant Bastard, obviously without quite reaching its greatness. The main beef I have with this is that it's just too boozy, but still a bold, complex brew.
4.6Bottle from Coppers, Newcastle. Dark red, copper coloured with a thick white head. It has a rich pine and orange marmalade flavour with burnt toffee notes, candi sugar and gentle grapefruit, tangerine and pine on the warming, spicy finish. Excellent!
