3.9Bottle@home, from BeerRepublic. Strong, averagely balanced nuances of overaged mango, caramel and some pine. High hops with clear profile. Medium taste profile and long aftertaste with hoppy, overaged, bit dry mango. Medium body with medium/low carbonation. Overall, surprisingly fruity and organic for US product. No gimmicks. Nice. 8 3 8 4 16
3.9A barley wine no doubt. Maybe the hops dropping out has let the rum barrels shine through and give it tis impression. But it’s very good. Clean and full flavoured. Online saveur bier
4.0750 ml bottle
Accidentally having aged this longer than anticipated, I found myself drinking more of a hoppy barleywine than a true imperial IPA. Even so it has held up well to the standards of a typical Founders release. Given its cost I probably will not be eager to buy another but would happily try it fresh from a bar tap for comparison in the future.
AROMA / APPEARANCE
Smoothie, citrus, and creamy vanilla have mellowed a biting hop driven nose into a soothing cloud of resin. The dense mandarin body nicely contrasts the heavy vanilla frosting that acts as a protective layer.
FLAVOR / PALATE
Orange creamsicle briefly takes full focus before the rum treatment sneaks into the limelight. The light oakiness then gives way to a graceful bitter finish that suggests the time in the barrel was just right for this release. I wouldn't sit on it much longer if you have one in the cellar but if you do open it expect a fun playful one off.
3.7Bottle. Gold with amber tinge. Aroma is rum barrel and hoppy citrus and floral. Taste is the same. The rum barrel makes it great. Love this series.
3.7Tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours hazy brown, not attractive, lots of yeast in suspension, I guess. Aroma is rich, aromatic, of dried fruits, raisin, figs, nuts. The time spent of rum barrels is evident. Body is not thick, but oily. Carbonation is moderate. Taste is medium-high bitter. Final is long and aromatic, alcoholic, oily.
3.5Bottle dated 2018 .... hazy golden pour with a thick frothy off white head and lots of lacing .... aroma of rum, caramel malts, faded hops and light citrusy notes like grapefruit .... taste is of citrusy hops, faded hops, caramel malts, rum and sweet .... simple some dry oak .... finish is sweet and of linger rum and caramel malts .... rums more balanced and subtle ... abv is hidden well
3.3Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 33B/22A). Bottle 35.5 cl - Batch 1819 6 (BBF unknown - Bottled on 06.05.18 - 2018 edition). AROMA: medium-high aroma of rum, oxidized malt (caramel-like), medium-low vinous character and a background of peppery alcohol. low background notes of oxidized hops (dried grass). APPEARANCE: light amber color and slightly hazy with particles in suspension. Medium off-white head, creamy, with good retention. lace formation. TASTE: initial medium malty flavor with an oxidized character (caramel-like), followed by medium rum notes, low oxidized hops and slight vanillin. medium bitterness with a dry and slightly bitter finish. PALATE: medium-high body with medium carbonation. OVERALL: an enjoyable barrel aged DIPA where the barrel notes tend to be more prominent and the base beer start to fade. Maybe not the best style to age in a barrel.
3.8Yo ho ho a rum barrel Imperial IPA. Straight up rum soaked alcohol delivery device. Hops support the overall full bodied beer. Barrel Runner is a whole new beer experience for me.
Thin foam. Rum taste mixed with citrus and hops, sweet and sour. Sweet rum and coconut palate
4.8Aged to perfection. 11.1% alcohol. I don’t know what else to say, Founders knocks it out of the park.
2.712 oz bottle dated 6/04/18 and opened today pours a hazy dark golden color with lasting off-white head. Aroma is dominated by rum, with brown sugar, oak and tropical fruit. Taste is sweet and alcoholic. Body is medium to full. If I hadn't read the label I would have called this a barleywine. I tried it because it was Founders, but had trouble finishing one.
3.6Bottle 12 fl oz. Cloudy golden with a white head. Strong rum aroma. Not sure that there is much IPA left in this beer after the barrel ageing :-). It is a good beer to drink, not a typical ipa though. Long finish
3.6Bottle thanks Alex bb29/5/19 oro carico Velata buona schiuma piuttosto persistente panettone candito piuttosto amara nota arancia candita un filo riscaldante un filo ossidata
3.1Bottle bought from Brews of the World, Burton-upon-Trent, drunk at home. Dark gold, clear with a frothy off-white head. 80% of the aroma is white rum, but I'm getting a touch of stone-fruit hop just behind it. Sugarcane sweet and unapologetically boozy taste with a more mellow and rounded finish than I was expecting. I think there's a decent beer beyong the rum, but it feels spoiled rather than enhanced. A bit of a struggle.
3.8Bottle in Rome-Italy with Daniele. Grazie Alex. Dark golden a bit amber clear pour, tick off white foam with drafts. Nose: panettone cake, cinnamon cake, burnt cane sugar. Mouth is great, rhum is present and charming. Quite bitter finish in a sweet malty and spicy ba beer. Thumbs up!
3.8Flaske.Ravfarvet let diset øl. Lækker duft af ROM. Where Has the rum gone. Smagen er boozy men lækker integreret. God barrel aged barleywine
3.7Smell of oak, alcohol, overripe fruit. Opaque orange colour, off-white head. Aroma of oak, rum, alcohol, spruce. Medium carbon, viscous texture.
3.8Bottle from the bootlegger in Paris that I have rated and tasted at home, in Epalinges, yesterday, on the balcony. Personally, I had a good impression with this beer, not a beverage to become drunk rather a beer to drink quietly. The color is is brown/orange, slightly troubled, thin and white/brown foam, normal carbonation. The taste is alcoolic and a bit harsh at the palate, even though you get a really smooth and aromatic side of rhum, a sensation to be amore pirate of the caribean sea, vanilla, toffee, malt, sweet but it was not disgusting for me, well done touch of hop at the final.
4.08th June 2019
Hazy deep gold beer, small bubbly pale cream colour head. Vibrant fruity rum nose. Fairly smooth palate, mildly dry, decent trailing minerally carbonation. Light malts bring a light creamy sweetness. Smooth vibrant fruity bouncy rum follows the snout. It's a double IPA, so where are the hops? There is pine and ripe citrus peel. Touch of ripe lemon. More rum and a trace of woody bitterness on the finish. Spectacularly rum barrel, bold and proud and unsubtle and I can't help but doff my hat and enjoy it.
3.8Mosaic wyczuwalny w postaci lekkiej cebuli.
4.2Colore miele d’acacia torbido e luminoso.
3.2I'm glad everyone has finally come to their senses and given a barrel aged IPA the low rating they deserve, even if it's made my founders. Boozy. Barrely. Some bitter herbs and lots of sweet caramel. Pours amber with ok head. Bittersweet end. Doesn't come together well. Bottle.
3.7Enjoyed this. Strong dank and rum aroma. Flavors were boozy and slightly sweet from oak. Nice brandy-like color.
4.0Wine, Then rum scents, sweet, grapes are also here, or raisins. Very sweet scent. Rich. Flavour: cons first, right after first taste alcohol is punching you in mouth. This is from barrel I guess. No signs of IPA at all. After few sips it is ok. Some rum after taste comes in, but it is not dominating (im not rum fan so ok). Bitterness is hidden. Overall fine beer with some twist and turns here and there.
