Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.

On tap @Skaal. Pours deep red, with little to no head.
Scent: Wine, oak, heavy malts.
Taste: Oak, heavy, caramel, yeast.
Texture: High co2.
Puffy head with oak flavour. Ginger tongue. Sweet throughout. Tart with honey finish.
Fra flaske.
Mahognifarvet med gærrester.
Aroma af alkohol, fad, malt, karamel, whisky og tørret frugt.
Fyldig i munden. Super smooth. Behagelig fadfornemmelse. Sød og rund. Malt dominerer. Fuld krop.
bottle enjoyed at home, pours brown with average head. bread, malt and wood in the aroma. toffee, burnt bread and oak-ish flavour with vanilla accents, well hidden alcohol. interesting one...
0,355l bottle from Beer Republic. Pours brown, little reddish color. Flavor of caramel, sweetness, maltiness, vanilla, alcohol, oak, wood, fudge. Medium plus body, some balancing bitterness, mostly sweet malty taste with some alcohol. Great old ale, sweet and a little boozy, barley wine like, just for my taste.

Magnifique robe ambrée sombre surmontée d'un mince filet de mousse blanc cassé peu persistante.
Le nez est sur des arômes liquoreux,malts de Whisky aves des notes de fût de chêne et d'épices....
La bouche est à l'image du nez avec des saveurs d'agrumes confits...
Le palais est assez long et très agréable sur la douceur et l'amertume avec une légère sécheresse.

Dégustée avec mon petit Kittnbieer dans un verre "Saveur bière".
Température de début 9 à 10°.
Très belle robe ambrée sombre surmontée d'un mince filet de mousse blanc cassé peu persistante.
Nez d'un grand raffinement : senteurs liquoreuses, barrique, fût de chêne, malts de whisky, touche épicée...
Goût savoureux : vieil alcool, agrumes confits, liqueur.
Palais long avec une parfaite balance douceur/amertume et une subtile et agréable sécheresse.
Encore un chef-d'oeuvre en provenance de l'immense brasserie Founders.

Bottle. Color: Copper, tan head. Aroma: Sweet malty, hints of caramel and fudge. Taste: Medium to over medium sweet light roasted malt, caramel, fudge, brown sugar, molasses. Notes of vanilla and wood. Very lightly bitter, some more bitterness at finish. Sirupy. Above medium body, low carbonation. Pretty sweet, but nice one.
Bottle - nice Old Ale with a good balance of malt and molasses. It's a bit more complex thanks to the oak aging. Will definitely try again.
Ampolla. Cervesa color coure fosc amb poca escuma. Aromes de fruits sec (pansa, pruna), brioix, magdalena. Cos alt, carbonatació mitja-baixa. Dolça, sembla un pastisset, molt bona!
IN der Nase holzig, Trauben, Bourbon. Ebenso im Trunk, dabei cremig, hohe Drinkability. Mittig Malz, Sherry, hinten leichte Süße, angenehme Wärme. Lecker.
Caramelkleurig met fijne crèmekleurige schuimkraag. Mout, siroop, caramel, hint vanille, beetje vineus, eik. Milde bitter in de afdronk. Mooi bier.

Pours deep amber red with a one finger thick white head.
Very weak sweet malts aroma.
Better in mouth, taste is quite sweet, a malty bomb plus some toffee. Light bitter finish.
Underwhelming.
Flaske, tappet 12/30/16. Mørk brun, uklar/partikkelfyldt. Aroma burbon fad, eg, malt, sødlig tung. Meget tyk/viskøs, tung burbon eg malt smag, sødlig, med en smule bitterhed i eftersmagen. God men lidt for domineret af fadsmagen.
Une bière faite à l’ancienne avec un goût bien prononcé qui laisse une saveur assez longue en bouche.

(shiny roux, nez grenade, pomme, sherry, trousse, pleine (mélasse (add)), gin tonic, suze, miel houblon-épines)
Nez : raisin sec, fruits confits. Bouche : l’amertume d’abord, puis le nez se confirme. Côté sucré contenu. Final : raisin sec, pruneau, mais assez court.
LCI. Uit de fles geschonken. Heerlijk! Bitter, zoet, moutig, caramel en eik. Prachtig bier derhalve!

.Appearance: Dark reddish brown, loose tan white head. Very hazy, some sentiment visible.
.Aroma: Rich, malty characteristic. Slight fruitiness. Notes of reason, caramel, oak, and nice amount of vanilla coming through.
.Taste: Vanilla, oak, and very sweet with a slight alcohol booziness. Bitterness very noticeable on the finish, providing a nice balance. Very pronounced flavor. Delicious and different.
.Palate: Full body, very creamy, dry finish.
.Overall: A.
.Bottom Line: Another well made Founders beer. So much flavor and easy to drink.
Pours a clear deep red, with a whitish tan head. Aroma is malt and wood. Tastes a rich maltiness, quite drinkable, with notes of oak. This one gets a 'thumbs up'.
Drank with Tijs @ Piet Huisman 05-01-2018. Very good. Thick, malty, rich sweet taste. Reminds me of a barley wine.
Bottle 335ml. Fast disappearing white head. Poors beautiful amber. Aroma are mid/heavy malty, caramel, bread, liquorous. Mid sweet, mid bitterness. Alcoholic finish. Taste like a light scotch
Dark ruby red with a spoongy light brown persistent foam.
Aroma of wood, alcool, roasted malt.
It tastes first of smoked wood, then come out the malts, with sweets, caramel, red fruits and a more sour close up.
Interesting.
Pours dark, ruby amber with a thick, dense head. Aroma is roast and molassas. Taste is bitter toffee at first, before opening up to a sweet malt finish. A good and interesting beer.
helder rood/amber/koper met licht getinte kraag. aroma van mout, toffee, en caramel, smaken van graan, alcohol, redelijk zoet, matig bitter, toffee, mout, overall erg veel graan, hout, beperkt.
Bottle from Beer Republic. Aroma is barley malt, caramel, toffee, lots of wood, vanilla, sweet grains, alcohol, bourbon, butterscotch, marzipan. Flavour is sweet and moderate bitter with some booze. Body is medium to full. Quite heavy on the sweet barley malt and booze, Bourbon with toffee, vanilla and thick oak. I get why this is popular but it's a bit too much for me.
Tap (Kontynuacja, Wrocław). Miedziane z drobniutka, bardzo trwałą pianą w kolorze ecru. Ciemne owoce, karmel w aromacie. W smaku rządzi słodka wanilia ale tylko na początku i dopiero gdzieś dalej pojawiaja karmel i owoce. Na finiszu delikatny, drewniany posmak beczki, przyjemnie ściągający z wyraźną nutką alkoholu ale wpasowywujaca się w piwo.
W aromacie pięknie, jest karmel, są ciemne owoce, są rodzynki, są figi. W smaku sporo tego co w zapachu, ale atakuje bardzo nieprzyjemne drewno niestety :<
