Founders Green Zebra Watermelon

Founders Green Zebra Watermelon

Subtly sour and a little sweet, this ale is a refreshing take on a nearly extinct German style, gose. Watermelon is the highlight of this lightly-hopped treat and gives it a hint of satisfying juiciness. The soft mouthfeel and dry finish comes courtesy of the addition of sea salt, a traditional gose ingredient.

2.9 My apologies for the review, but I’m not a big fan of this style. Poured from a can into a tall sample glass, which yielded a nice two finger foamy head. Nice, filtered golden color. Nose smelled like a Pilsner despite it being an ale/gose. First sip was very tart and shocking. Brought me back to being a kid and trying a sour patch kid (candy) for the first time. That effect mellowed as I continued to sample. It was more of a sour taste with a hint of watermelon. I’ll pass, but if you like sours, it’s good that it doesn’t have an artificial, sugary watermelon taste.
3.1 Hazy golden pour with a fine head Ok intensity in the aroma Decent sourness and acidity Easy to drink Watermelon, lemon, pale malt and some salt [Can from Gulating in Fredrikstad, Norway]
3.1 Fat. Gyllengul öl med med ett lättare vitt, snabbt försvinnande, skum. Doft och smak av melon, citrus, lätt sälta och örter. Bra balans mellan sötma och syrlighet.
3.3 355 ml can from Premier Gourmet. Pours a cloudy golden orange colour with small white head. Aroma is juicy candyish watermelon, light minerals and grains. Flavour has lots of sweet watermelon with modest saltiness and light graininess. Body on the lighter side. Pleasant.
3.5 33cl blik. Helder goudgeel van kleur, fijne romige witte schuimkraag. De geur is watermeloen en karamel. Smaak is zuur, watermeloen, zout en citrus.
3.5 Pours a clear golden amber coloration with a small, fizzy head that soon fades to nothing. Smells light doughy malt and sweet watermelon. Taste follows the nose, with a fairly straightforward, fairly sweet and slightly tangy watermelon note dominating the flavor profile here, rounded out by some light malty accents a hint of sea salt coming through in the aftertaste. Finishes with a light tartness and some watermelon and sea salt lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and medium/lively carbonation. A decent, refreshing Gose that drinks pleasantly enough, but is a little too sweet and one-dimensional for my personal taste. If it wasn't for that hint of sea salt coming through in the aftertaste, this would be almost indistinguishable from a generic fruited Kettle Sour. There is a nice, tangy tartness to it that ultimately balances out the slightly overdone sweetness though.
3.5 Can from Beer Republic, shared. Pours light golden color. Aroma of watermelon, saltiness, malts, citrus, hops. Lightish body, watermelon is quite evident, which is a bit light itself. More juicy than some goses I've had.
3.0 (On tap) Hazy golden. Small white head. Aroma a little odd - watermelon, candy and some barnyard hint. Medium body good carbonation. Taste a little weird too. Fruity especially watermelon. Candy. There quite a lot of sweetness albeit wit plenty of balancing tartness, but a touch too sweet. There’s also an odd funky somewhat sickly note which does not agree with me. Unusual. Glad I tried it. Not for me.
3.5 DATE: November 22, 2019... OCCASION: a double dose of gose tonight--first, Sixpoint's Citrus Jammer, now Founders' offering... GLASSWARE: Ommegang pokal... this comes from a 12 oz. can fizzing into a snow-white head that tops a nearly clean golden body.... the head does settle into thin smears of white.... a steady stream of of lazy bubbles animates the ale... this comes off mellow and fruity--watermelon, apple, pleasant floral aromas, and vegetable... the first sip is alive, bubbling with burn at the throat and a medium-bodied presence, though easy-drinking... puckering with its tart watermelon and candied sugars... apple, pear, some berry, and some sweeter textures too--it achieves a paradoxical sweet/sour dynamic that could make a Chinese restaurant jealous... again, drinking this as winter beckons is perhaps not the best way to experience it, but it still makes for a nice nightcap with a low ABV...
3.5 五反田のtruthにて。 ボディ丸くしっかり。乳酸菌の後味。口当たり
3.7 355 ml can from Antenna America, Kannai. Pours pink-yellow, cloudy with only sparse white foam on the top. Nose has some kettle sour huskiness, tart and feels wet. Tastes tart also, medium level of sweetness there, salty. Watermelon kind o in the background, quite the essence only, bit "heavier" than it normally is. Tasty and refreshing.
3.5 can - nice clear amber color. Refreshing, slightly sour taste. Fruity sour aroma.
3.6 12 ounce can. Pours a golden color with a thine white head that lasts. Taste is of watermelon, salt, fruit and citrus. Similar, slightly cleaner aroma. Has a decent body with a sour and tart finish. Overall, quite excellent. Easy to drink, refreshing and rather enjoyable
2.9 Re-rating (previous 3.1) Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (29A: watermelon / 27-Gose). Can 35.5 cl Batch 1961614 (BBF unknown - Canned on 07.17.20). AROMA: medium grainy neutral malt aroma with a sweet profile and light lactic background. APPEARANCE: gold color and cristal clear. medium-low white head with low retention. TASTE: initial low clean sourness that is quickly overwhelmed by a medium sweetness resembling fruit candy (not watermelon). medium to medium-low bitterness with a semi-dry finish. PALATE: medium-low body with medium carbonation. OVERALL: a gose with an unusual sweet profile, almost a bit cloying.
3.1 Draught @Matrikkel1. Slightly hazy golden with a white head. Aroma is tart and citrussy with herbal notes and sweary saddles. Horse beer. Salty and tart citrus flavour. Quite nice actually. Reminds me of a raddler.
2.6 very sweet and watermelon forward. decent when cold, but the sweetness is overpowering when even slightly warm.
3.6 Can. Poured hazed golden/orange, white head. Aroma of watermelon, fruit, candy. Taste was sweet, sour, tart, watermelon, salt, watermelon Jolly Rancher.
2.5 Tap @ Skaal, Copenhagen. Clear golden with a tiny white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, fruity, sugary and melon. Flavor is quite sweet. Sweet finish. Any potential sour notes drowned in all the sweet melon. 120919
3.1 Can from Gedeelde Vreugde, Sint-Niklaas - many thanks, Anke! Pours clear golden-orange with a lasting, thin, foamy, white head. Aroma of canned pineapple, melon, cut red apple, banana peel, honey, salt, sweet yoghurt, a bit dusty-earthy. Taste is medium fruity sweet, estery & sugary at the same time, ripe pineapple, banana & sweet watermelon on honeyish & white bready maltiness, sourish wheat, lemon & lime underneath with the faintest pinch of salt & spice. Dryish, floral, somewhat earthy hoppy finish, yet honey, watermelon & pineapple prolong the overly sweet effect. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Too bad, experimental Gose gone wrong, wasn't promising in the aroma and didn't deliver in the end either.
3.5 This is interesting. Very fizzy pour, apple juice appearance, no head. Very light taste, lots of carbonation, sweet with a sour dry finish. Juicy, fruity, which I guess is the watermelon. This is really more like a hard cider than a beer..which isn't really bad either.
2.8 Strong fruity watermelon berry aroma with salt and biscuity malt Pours golden with big creamy white head Very sweet berry watermelon flavor balanced with salt and malt. Medium light bodied with medium co2, lingering jolly rancher watermelon finish. Interesting beer but too sweet in my opinion which takes away from the refreshing quality. Half a glass is enough for me.
4.5 Pours a medium yellow with a white head that leaves lacing. Nose is watermelon.Taste is watermelon and sour with little aftertaste. Salt, malt, and watermelon in balance. 12 oz can Packed on 6/20/19
3.6 Can. Amber-gold pour, low head retention. Watermelon and salt aroma, some lactic acid, bread. Quite a sweet melon flavour cut nicely by sea salt into a refreshing finish. Bready base, medium feel, lightly sour, crisp balance. Loses a little flavour impact over the journey, but that salty kick makes it a good summer beer.
4.1 The watermelon flavor was amazing robust in this beer with a nice Gose sour after taste that complimented it. This is a very drinkable beer that would be great was a summer fare or by itself on a warm day.
Matige koolzuurprikkel. Redelijk zoet voor een Gose.
2.2 Tastes a little like cider. Not for me
3.1 Pale gold with a fleeting, foamy head. Aroma of lemon margarita and watermelon. Taste is tart, salty, with watermelon at the end. Refreshing on a hot day but nothing special.
3.1 Pours a clear pink gold color with a white head that fades to literally nothing. Watermelon candy nose and flavor. Clean and mildly tart.
