Founders Sumatra Mountain Brown

Founders Sumatra Mountain Brown

This bold, imperial brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including Caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of Chocolate malt for its deep color and Aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced imperial brown ale to a decadent level.

3.9 Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Prost (bottled 12/4/17 so hops should be gone). Appearance is pretty, clear red with lots of small white floaties for a bit of a snow-globe effect; tons of sparkle, 1/2-finger width beige head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is rich roasted malt, roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Taste is as aroma with some earthy/roasted bitter balance. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with frothy texture, pleasant alcohol warmth and mild astringency, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, some bitterness present though likely from the roasting vs. significant hop contribution. Strong, well-blended malt-coffee-chocolate aroma/flavor.
4.6 The bottle pours a very dark brown almost black color with a small beige head. The nose has massive coffee (espresso) and roasted malts. The taste is amazingly good: the coffee, roasted malts, dark chocolate and caramel flavours are very well balanced. Creamy mouthfeel..
3.8 Botella. Deep dark brown colour with a nice big steady light brown head, good lacing. Sweet aroma of coffee and dark malts and chocolate with dark fruits. Good palate. Flavour is quite sweet with coffee and a roasty like maltiness along with chocolate.
4.1 Fles 35,5cl thuis. Stevige koffie, chocolade, wat droog, caramel, lichte koolzuurprikkel, flink bitter, roasted malts, zoettonen, redelijk zacht, licht boozy. (3-5-2019).
3.8 Caramel Coffee
3.4 Chestnut brown pour with aroma of coffee, caramel, and chooclate. Coffee notes with some chocolate, nuts, and caramel flavor. Good beer.
3.7 On bottle @Arresten Vejle. Pours deep brown, with beige head. Scent: Coffee, roasted malts. Taste: Little coffee, malts, little sweet. Texture: Well carbonated, creamy.
4.0 Aroma: sharp coffee, steel and malt Appearance: clear brown, tan head and sheet lacing Flavour: floral hop, sweet choc malt like maltesers with hop to balance Palate: lingering sweet choc malt
3.9 12 ounce bottle purchased two and a half years ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($3.49). POURS a very dark brown color (bordering on black) with a half finger of tan foam and some visible floaties at the bottom. AROMA of deep dark earthy coffee from volcanic, smoky earth booziness along the lines of a mild Islay scotch, spicy vegetal-ness like a raw jalapeno, and roasted malts. FLAVOR of lightly sweetened dark toffee, strong earthy coffee (though not as strong as the nose implied), chewy roasted malts, with some muted dark chocolate and molasses notes. Some roasty-bitterness in the finish. Except for a little bit of booze in the aroma, the high ABV is well concealed. The strong coffee used here is really key. (727, 1128)
3.9 Bottle @ Wika tasting. Appearance: pours clear brown with good tan soapy head and lacing. aroma/taste: barley, caramel, light alcohol, light dried fruit, intense coffee, light chocolate, light grass and floral notes. palette: strong coffee and medium malty aroma, average carbonation, medium to full body, average to notable sweetness, balanced by a medium bitterness, average to long duration and an oily texture. Overall: excellent coffee ale
4.0 Strong coffee aroma. Very dark amber color with a medium tan head. Bitter beginning with a lightly sweet finish. Bitterness comes back in the end. Creamy palate throughout.
4.5 Lovely, heavy coffee smell. Smooth texture. Rich, full taste. Lots of coffee upfront, rolling into almost an earthy finish. Will warm/wake you up on some coldark night.

3.8 Bottle from Rehills of Jesmond. Pours brown with a cream head. Pleasant coffee aroma. The taste is nutty coffee with light spice and booze. Nice.
3.4 Pours dark opaque with roasting coffee on the nose; bitter oily palate with lengthy complex finish
Podniebienie: Niskie do średniego wysycenie, oleiste, nieco lepkie. Alko ukryte w sposób należyty, choć do końca człowieka raczej nie zwiedzie. Poprawnie zbalansowane.
Piana obfita, nasycona. W smaku przypomina potrójne espresso, wyczuwalna wanilia i delikatna nutka marcepanu. Coś w sam raz dla miłośników mocnej kawy.
3.9 Bottle. Pours reddish brown with a medium sized creamy lacy head. Aroma was roasty with coffee, chocolate and molasses. Flavor of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, roasted coffee, nuts, and had a touch of brown sugar.
4.0 Clear reddish brown colour, beige head. Aroma of coffee, caramel, malts, cacao, roasted notes. Sweet malty flavour, coffee, light bitter, mostly sweet. Finish coffee, brown sugar, roasted malts, lingering bitterness. Nice!! (from 355mL bottle @ home)
3.8 Twelve ounce bottle priced at $2.99 in Monterey, CA. Medium brown pour. Aroma of roasted malts and medium roast coffee. Flavor is vinous and slightly bitter with notes of roasted malts and coffee. Lighter level of carbonation. Lighter body especially considering ABV.
3.0 355 ml bottle, from Systembolaget, shared by my son Steinar. Dark brown colour, small beige head. Aroma of cold coffee and brown malts. Distinct flavour of sharpish coffee and slightly dry malts. Not really a favourite of mine.
4.1 Rich, malty and sweet. A lot of caramel, coffee in the flavour along with vanilla and chocolate notes. A slight bitter roasted coffee in the finish but this is one for those who like their beers sweet.
3.8 355ml bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, caramel. Taste of alcohol, coffee, chocolate, caramel, vanilla, sugar, dark malts, bittersweet. Medium bodied, fine carbonation. The booziness overrides the flavours a bit but it's a pretty decent impy brown.
3.5 Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spirits. Dark brown and very translucent. A tiny film of beige head. Oak and plum in the aroma, but I mostly smell freshly ground coffee beans. Tastes sweet and boozier than I'd expected, with a medicinal hoppy astringency in the finish. Very light body with heavy carbonation. Its a very good beer but doesn't have that fine-tuned balance that the best Founders beers have.
4.5 11-10-2018; bottle; at home (bought online at www.drankgigant.nl, Oost-Souburg, The Netherlands). The looks of the beer are very nice. It is as dark as I had expected it to be. The beer is very dark brown, approaching black. In the light a lovely deep dark ruby red glow can be seen. Very nice. On top of the beer some nice brown foam is formed. Not to much tough and foam retention is very low. A minimal drape is left after some time. The beer is very aromatic and it is pretty much exactly as expected. That is very good, since I expected a very good beer. Malts five some nice sweet aromas, but also some nice toasty notes, including bittersweet chocolate and some caramel. Very nice. The beer literally screams coffee. It is filled with loads and loads of bittersweet coffee aromas, with a slight sour note. It is very pure and natural and not to strong, yet clearly present. Some nice herbal hop aromas go very well with the coffee. It has a minimal touch of liquorice. All aromas are ver harmonious. Very nice. The taste of the beer is nice. It has some nice sweet malts, with some bittersweet chocolate notes. The coffee adds to these bittersweet flavour. Hops add some additional bitterness. This results in a nicely balanced beer. However, it is a minimal watery note touch. It could be slightly stronger. The palate of the beer is nice. Quite a full body, smooth texture with a slight sticky coffee note, and medium carbonation. The finish of the beer is also nice. It is filled with loads of coffee, some bittersweet chocolate, loads and loads of coffee and in the end bitter hops.
3.9 Aroma: Very pleasant: intensive, high quality coffee, cherries and other red fruits, caramel, chocolate, cocoa, nuts, very malty. No bean aroma that is often present in beers with added coffee. Appearance: Clear light brown with huge, creamy beige foam. Taste: Sweet, balanced by some roasted bitterness. A little bit sour. Slight boozy aftertaste. Palate: Body medium to high, smooth, silky, carbonation quite low. Overall: Very good brown ale, very good influence of coffee. The only issue I can find is some alcohol in taste.
3.4 Dark, as black as a beer can get (which is very very dark ruby). Coffee dominates the aroma. Taste is a mix of coffe, chocolate and a hint of dark cherries. The sweetness finaly ends in a moderate bitterness. Good!
4.2 Fully opaque brown pour, moderate cream head with good retention and beautiful lacing. Smells like brown sugar (light dairy scent, too) and coffee, although not very strongly. Balanced nose that goes more toward malty near the finish. Full bodied. Tastes like coffee, chocolate, malt. Has a "ringing" finish that sort of echoes chocolate notes. Slightly dry. Overall, it's very pleasant and rose far above my expectations for a brown ale.
3.9 Bottle. Clear red amber brown beer with a large beige head. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel, bread, coffee, nuts and herbs. Flavor is malty with notes of caramel, bread, coffee, chocolate, herbs and licorice. Well balanced.
