Free State Oatmeal Stout

Free State Oatmeal Stout

Full body and a well rounded flavor comes from a foundation of nine different grains. The oats add a special silky texture that complements the roasted malts. The rich malty flavor is spiced with plenty of Northern Brewer and Fuggles hops for balance.

3.0 APPEARANCE- pours nice an black, looks fairly tin, the head is thin with fine-ish bubbles but laces really nicely. NOSE- slightest hint of roastiness. FLAVOR- clean with light body. Slight bit of roasty malts in the flavor too. Nice long deep flavors, almost char, that stays in my mouth for quite a while after the sip. The palate may be the high point for this beer.
4.2 Free State Oatmeal Stout: a part of this complete breakfast, at least according to my Sunday ritual. Damn me if it wasn’t the best part of it. This Oatmeal Stout pours a very dark brown with a cream-colored head. Aroma of cocoa, licorice, cream, and toasted barley. Flavor had more of the same with some subtle coffee and a slightly bitter finish from the hops. Not the richest Oatmeal Stout in the world, but an exquisitely balanced one.
3.2 12 oz. bottle. Pours black with thick foamy tan head. Aroma was roasted malt, caramel and vanilla. Taste was bitter.
3.2 Bottle at home, Thanks Brad! Black pour, light tan head. Average retention. Aroma is sweet, roasted chocolate malts, light fruit, licorice. Smells nice. Taste is toasted malts, cocoa, burnt caramel, a light bitterness on the back end. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, highly carbonated. Would have enjoyed this more with a bit thicker mouthfeel.
3.6 Pint on tap. Opaque black with a lasting sticky foam on top. Nose is light cocoa, berry and coffee with cream. Flavor is the same with a bit of earthy citrus in the long finish. Near-medium body is balanced and has a medium carbonation.
3.6 Bottle: Dark brown with a small tan head. Cola, chocolate aroma. Taste is dusty, bitter chocolate, oats. Smooth, tasty...with a bit of a dry ending.. Pretty good.
3.8 12 oz. bottle. Pours a deep chocolate brown with a brief tan head. Nice aroma of sweet chocolate. Full body, smooth mouthfeel, slightly dry finish after the sweet taste. Pretty good!
3.7 Bottle. Chocolate, raisin, oat malt aroma. Dark brown with moderate head. Sweet chocolate oatmeal malt and moderately bitter grass flavor. Body a bit light.
3.4 Gift from Maxbier. Pours dark brown/black with an amber tint around the edges and a tan head that quickly disappears. Aroma is roasted malt with caramel, chocolate, and earthy hoppiness. Flavor starts dark roasted malt and coffee with a slightly sweet caramel. Chocolate middle and finishing with an almost burnt flavor and roasted bitterness with an earthy hop finish. Lingering bitterness.
3.7 Bottle received in trade from Bigtreebrewing, thanks for the opportunity. Solid dark brown color with faint ruby at the edges and a smallish khaki head the slowly dissipates. Chocolate and caramel maltiness with a hint of roast. Creamy silky mouthfeel. Nice beer, could maybe use a hint more roastiness though.
4.7 I love this beer. It is the best stout I have ever tasted. While my experience may be questioned, I have been to the Madison, Wi beer fest three times. This is the best stout I have ever had.
3.5 Opaque with brown head. Light sweet slightly grassy aroma. If you blindfolded me I would have guessed it was a pale ale or brown ale. Medium malt mouthfeel with some roast notes in the grassy hop finish. It is almost a black IPA.
3.6 Flight pour on tap at the brewery (Lawrence, KS). Pours a deeper blackish brown hue, a fairly opaque body shows some brownish glow, a bit of a ruby carmelized bottom and edges. Frothy light brown head atop stays as a mellow layer, decent film and thicker ring laces well enough. Aromas show oatmeal and earth, a bit of caramel, toast and roastiness as it settles in. Gentle coffee, caramel and black malts. Touches of a gentle creamy sweetness cut through a touch, some gentle roast cuts back a bit. Initial is medium bodied, a firmer roast and bitterness starts to hit off the batr, cutting through caramel and toast, some ashy life and gentle black coffee are prickly and a bit bitter on the palate. Earth, some decent hop character is pretty palpable on the bitterness standpoint into the backend and finish, almost a bit citric with firmer florals, a gentle roast and that mellow sweeter body trying to poke through but not really finding a chance. Backend is bitter, a bit toasty with that hop presence doing some work on the nose and backend. A bit citric, green with florals and faint pine. I rather enjoyed this beer, however the name definitely threw me for a loop.. Leaving me expecting something completely different as this bad boy offers some firmer hop character in line and running into Black IPA territory with some subtle roast. Tasty stuff.
3.4 Dark and heavy. Full body and thick. Kinda hoppy for a stout but it works well. Cola dominant. Id drink this again if I could find it in st louis.
3.5 bottle trade with RobertDale-then-on tap @Barley’s Brewhaus - Shawnee. Sharing some beers with RobertDale again, as he had traded a bottle of this after RBSG-StL, trying on tap too seemed a likely choice. Rich tan-black. A-roasty/chocolate-dk malt. T-roasty/chocolate-dk malt/oats, hint of hops.
3.8 Black ,kaki head, light froth, lace. Cola chocolate aroma, planty herbal and leather, some hop or yeast funk, some dark berry. Sounds complex for an oatmeal stout. Really its fairly mild though overall. Taste is some mild roast, chocolate, some herbal planty citrus, caramel. smooth dark malts. Pretty good.Fairly rich.
3.4 12 oz. bottle thanks to GrandaddyKC, thanks Brad. Nice light fluffy foam on top of the pitch black stout. Aroma is toasted oats, roasted barely and mild earth tone. The flavor is what you expect with a nice body from the oats no doubt, the flavor of the oats does’t come through but the chewy texture is there with a mild creaminess. Mild earthy hop for bitterness. Decent stout.
3.6 Aroma is chocolate and dark malts. The flavor is chocolate, dark/roasted malts, a low undercurrent of hops and an acidic/slightly sour fruit in the finish.
3.0 Bottle. A- Cocoa, chocolate, tobacco, alcohol. A- Black color, black liquid, tan head. T- Cocoa, bakers chocolate, roasty. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, roasty finish. O- Not bad, not great. There is a bitter lingering taste after a while that it not all that enjoyable but otherwise a decent beer. Not sure what it is with Kansas Breweries and putting bison on their Stout labels (see Tallgrass).
3.7 12 oz bottle pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, grain and coffee. Taste is malts, grain and chocolate.
3.8 Nearly opaque black with a small, light tan head that left nice lacing. Aroma of roast, oats, like anise, cocoa. Taste of roast, oatmeal, some burnt notes, and chocolate.
3.7 Received in a trade -- Poured into a pint glass. Shows up as an opaque brown/black, with small white bubbles. Aroma is faint molasses and wood. The taste starts out with a roast coffee, that fades to Chocolate and toffee. Very drinkable Stout with a creamy smoothness throughout.
3.7 Bottle. Pour is very dark. Chocolate malt and coffee. Nice base that is chocolate heavy. Nice oatmeal stout.
3.8 12oz bottle pours with a dark body that supports a thin dark tan head. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts, a bit of burnt malts, some spicy black licorice and then sweet smelling blueberry jam and cherries. The taste starts with a pleasing modest richness that delivers sweet malts, some dark roasted malts, chocolate and then sweet prunes and cherry like fruity esters. It gets a tad spicy here and there with a black licorice type note. Pretty nice stuff.
3.6 12oz bottle, purchased from Lukas Liquor in Missouri during my RBSG stay. Best by notch seems to indicate the 4th week of July. Dark brown color, kind of clear around the edges. Half finger of light brown / off-white head. Leaves good, thicker lace. Medium plus body. Good smooth lighter carbonation, nice chewy texture. Very lightly slick finish. Nice oatmeal flavor, light dark chocolate, cocoa, light bit of coffee, good mild roast, light coffee, and a nice bit of earthy hop balance. Very good, flavorful balanced oatmeal stout. Moderate bitter taste, Lighter to moderate sweet. Very solid, tasty, satisfying well-done balanced oatmeal stout. Was great to enjoy with my sandwich lunch.
3.1 Pours a dark brown to black with a finger tan head that quickly fades to a foam. Aromas of roasty chocolate, some dark fruits. Taste is sweet but fairly well balanced. Finished slightly dry. Medium mouth feel and carb.
3.9 A very decent oatmeal stout. One of the better of the standard bottled offerings from Free State. Rich maltyness with a smooth thick body.
3.2 The appearance of this beer is a very, very dark brown color that is opaque due to its darkness, and it has a small tan head that fades quickly. The aroma blends roasted, caramel, and chocolate malts with vanilla, and the flavor is a nice blend of mild umami, slight sourness, slight malt bitterness, and a touch of sweetness. The mouthfeel has a thin texture, medium-light body, soft carbonation, and a malty finish.
2.3 An ok beer. I would say average or a hair above for an oatmeal stout. But no need to buy again any time soon.
3.4 Dark brown pour from a 12oz bottle with a nice tan head. Nose is roasted malts. Nice and easy to drink with a pleasant roasted malt and slight bitter chocolate finish.
