Freetail La Muerta

Freetail La Muerta

9.1% ABV, 50 IBU

A growing South Texas tradition, La Muerta is brewed each year for Día de los Muertos in honor of our departed friends and family. A big, lush Imperial Stout, La Muerta is full of roast, smoke and chocolate flavors from an array of specialty malts that go into this garnetblack ale. If you are holding this bottle, it means either you (or someone you know with a kind heart) boldly stood in line for hours on the first Saturday of November. Karma rewards those who give selflessly, so share with your closest compadres or a new friend. La Muerta will age wonderfully for years to come – we recommend enjoying one now and save some for the future, if you can. ¡Salud!

4.4 Deep heavy dark brown with a thin light tan head. Deep cocoa and roast on the nose, a touch of earthy coffee as well. Smooth roasty flavor lots of chocolaty sweetness, roast, and a gentle bit of coffee. Complex and toasty and sweet and full.
3.7 Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a half finger mocha colored head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Spotty lacing left behind. Slightly smokey, roasted aroma with dark and sweet malt notes, dark fruit and alcohol. Some charred wood along with dark chocolate, coffee bean, oatmeal, toffee and caramel. Some fudge/chocolate cake sweetness underneath, balancing out the smoked meat/burnt malts. Slightly viscous medium body with a nice balance of smokey, roasted malt, dark chocolate and sweet booze. Dry and toasty with lots of dark chocolate, coffee bean and oatmeal flavor but it never becomes acrid or overly burnt tasting. There is some chocolate cake, toffee and caramel sweetness balancing things out along with some strong booze in the finish. Plenty of alcohol flavor but never hot or harsh. Not overly complex but has a nice balance of roast, sweetness and alcohol. Tasty but definitely a sipper.
4.5 Rated based on notes taken 3 Nov 2012 -- On tap at the Dia de la Muerta release party at the Brewery! Great time and an awesome beer. Dark, foreboding, smoky. Delish!

3.6 Bottle to glass. Pours a deep brown to black color with a creamy light brown head. A touch of roasted malts with a nice mild, not overwhelming, chili spiciness and a chocolatey sweetness. Similar flavor, but a touch of coffee shining through as well. A bit thin overall for an imperial stout, but enjoyable, with a nice lingering spicy chocolate.
3.3 Black, light brown lacing foam. Bitter coffee aroma, some spicy hints. Also coffee taste, but there is hot spicy tabosco there too. (Houston 201501)
3.8 22oz bottle (2013) in a tulip. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, some notes of chocolate and coffee, hints of smokiness and some dark fruits, hints of bitterness, and dough. Flavor the same with a nice blend of everything. Smoother texture. A pretty good imperial stout but could be a little thicker and not as sweet.
3.5 Black pour. Huge tan head. Tons of lacing. Aroma of coffee, malt, dark fruits, licorice. Taste is pretty close to the same. Fortunately not much licorice. A bit thin but decent.
3.8 Bottle from ZacM612. Dark brown pour with a big tan head of small bubbles. Aroma is dark malt and chocolate with a light hint of peat smoke. Bold flavor of slightly sweet malt and some bitterness. Nice.
4.0 Dark, almost black with thin beige head, slightly oily appearance. Aroma is chocolate, dark roast coffee, and a little booze. Flavor has a little spice. Very nice.
4.0 Fairly viscous very dark brown pour. Nose is light cinnamon and red chile and smoke. Flavors of dark chocolate, dark roast and sweet chocolate malts, light spice and light smokiness. Creamy full bodied mouth feel with fairly heavy carbonation.
3.6 Bottle shared by alexsdad06 pours opaque black. Nose slightly soapy, green pepper, light roast, some dark chocolate. Taste bitter roast up front, light chocolate, very faint pepper. Mild bitter roast finish. Older bottle and seems a little flat.
4.1 On tap at Freetail. Dark black and red. Light brown rim. Smells of coffee. Very smooth. Sits nicely on the palate with coffee and sweet dark chocolate. Good beer.
3.9 Excellent beer by a local San Antonio brewery. I had this on tap. Dark as night. Coffee, roasted malty notes. Foamy head. Dense. The booze is there but not overpowering. Full body. Smooth wash down. A beer meant for deep Autumn or a cold Winter’s night.
4.0 Bomber from Bu11zeye. Pours dark brown/black with no head. Aroma seems smoke, very. Full bodied or nearly. Flavor is smoke, ash dark malt, and some pepperiness. Getting a little chocolate. Really outstanding.

4.0 Bottle in Breckenridge with my dad. Pour is pitch black with a fluffy brown head and great lacing. Big smoke, meat drippings, cocoa, light coffee, marshmallows, and graham crackers in the aroma. Taste is smoky, dark chocolate dipped marshmallows, graham crackers, espresso, earthy hops, and grass with a toasted bitterness on the backend. Think mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Nice stout.
3.6 Bottle shared at DLD. Pours a darkish brown without much head. Aroma is of slight peppers and cocoa powder. Taste has some pepper in it.
4.0 Pours a nice dark black color, a little thin on the viscosity scale. Chocolate, roasted malt are mainly present on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a hint of burnt nuts, probably the smoke they talk about.
3.6 April 11, 2014 - bottle shared by Brandon. Dark brown pour with some head that faded quickly. Aroma and taste of chocolate, spice and slight smoke.
3.9 Bomber shared by Brandon - thanks! Dense brown pour with a small soapy head. Aroma of peppers and smoke. Medium palate. A bit of peppers on taste, plus some chocolate. Yummy.
3.4 Bottle: Bottle is an incredible gusher with two-third of the bottle ending in the sink. Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size foamy head with limited retention. Aroma of chocolate malt with light dry roasted malt is intriguing. Taste is an interesting mix of black chocolate malt with some light dry roasted malt with light residual sugar notes. Some small traces of smoke can also be detected. Body is lighter than expected and carbonation was exceptionally strong when I opened the bottle but died quite quickly. Interesting beers but texture and level of carbonation was definitely off in this bottle.
3.4 Bottle at Fastelavn Smagning 2014 @ J&C’s beer palace, Jutland Saturday Session 1 - 01/03/14, from an IP trade with Frank. Light black with a good sized tan head that retains well. Nose is dark malts, light smoke, roasty tones, dark chocolate, spice, liqourice, dark fruits. Taste comprises dark toffee fudge, spice, dark fruits, Xmas cake, cherry pangs, dark chocolate, light roast, molasses. Medium + in body, fine carbonation with a drying close carrying sweet licks. Ok impy but lacks depth and complexity.
4.0 Bottle 650ml @ fonefan Pours pitch black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, alcohol and coffee. Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with a long chocolate and coffee finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation soft.
3.8 Bottle, 22oz. It pours a black body under a dense, finger-thick light tan head. The aroma has chocolate, coffee, roasted malts and even more coffee. Some herbal hints. Supposed to be smoked, but I don’t detect that in the aroma. Some in the flavor though, which is also sweet, roasted and chocolatey. Not so much coffee. Full body and a soft carbonation. Coffee, roasted malts and some vanilla in the lasting finish. Alcohol notes all the way. A really nice one, tasteful and moreish. 140301
3.8 Bottle @ fonefan tasting. Black with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt and coffee. Flavor is very sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish with warming alcohol. 010314
