3.0 Can. Pours copper with off-white head. Aroma is bready and caramel, light toast, floral and grassy hops, light citrus, and faint pear. Flavor is dry malts, light bitterness, and faint apple and pear esters. Light/medium body and medium carbonation.
2.2 13 Rebels ESB is a slightly hazy honey golden brew with barely any head. Nose is an almost wine like bouquet of fruit varietals and maybe a touch of sweetness. Taste is initially dry but cloyingly sweet on the back end. a touch of bitters. an interesting beer. a bit of a lively body.
3.6 French Broad 13 Rebels ESB has a fairly thick cream colored head with heavy lacing and a murky, bubbly, orange appearance. The aroma is of toffee, light fruits, English hop resin, a slight nut, and citrus acidity. Taste is of all that, with mild bitterness, sweet bread dough, and a grass or weed note. Mouthfeel is medium, and French Broad 13 Rebels ESB finishes fairly crisp and odd. It’s one that the drinker would really have to try to appreciate, because it’s difficult to describe. RJT
3.1 Draught at the Barley's, Asheville, NC. Clear deep golden colour with a tiny white head. Nutty dry, sugary sweet, syrupy sweet and malty aroma. Nutty dryness, syrupy sweetness, mild hops and hops in the flavour. Decent.
3.5 Half pour at the source. Not particularly satisfying, but that is more a function of the style. Solid example of an ESB. IMO ranking is too low- scored much beer at BeerAdvocate. Pours a orange copper color- almost no head. Typical for FB. Taste is malty, bready, toffee/caramel sweetness up front but finishes really bitter and dry. It is an ESB, after all. Definite resin and mineral qualities to it. It is what is is supposed to be.
3.5 Bottle courtesy of Strykzone. Pours amber with a beige head. Nose of roasted malts. Medium body. Flavor favors malts, and there is a nice bitter finish. Good.
3.5 Bomber brought by April and Bentley, thanks! Pours orange brown with a sllight off white head. Aroma of wet bread, caramel, a touch of mineral. Flavor is also bready, slight caramel, slight mineral. Very minimal carb. Unlike the bitters More noticable grassy citrus hop in the finish than is traditional.
2.9 Sample @ French Broad during RBWG, Asheville. Amber pour with a small off-white head. The nose is quite toasty. Burnt brown bread. Almonds and trail mix. Light raisin. Taste has a mellow herbal hop accent. Plenty of toffee. Chewy malt. Light body, strong carbonation for the style. Serviceable.
3.7 In a 12 oz can. Not sure why this doesn?t rate much higher. Rich caramel flavors without being sweet or sticky, thanks mostly to some citrus hoppiness at the end. Could drink this for days.
3.4 I’m not huge fan of the ESB style, but this one is rather enjoyable. Soft carbonation, right amount of hops to malt balance, creamy head, beautiful to look at. Well done.
3.4 Draft at the brewery during RBWG. Pours a clear orange amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have toasted bread, grains, mild caramel/toffee notes with some mild fruity character, light resin and earth. Mild bitterness to the finish.
3.5 Poured from 22 oz bottle. Pours a dark gold. Thin white lace finish. I definitely pick up the caramel in the aroma, as well as the taste. A pretty good beer. Will drink again.
3.1 Bottle with Yanick. Pours copper gold with white head. Nose and taste of toasted bread, spicy yeast, light fruit and malty earth. Medium body.
3.0 @ Whole Foods Market / Asheville NC --- Dark amber with a thin film head cover, wide streaks of lace. Malt and sorghum open this, adding carbonation and burnt toast in the palate before yielding to solid floral hops in the finish. A little heavy in the stomach, especially for 5.2% abv. Drinkable, not memorable or satisfying.
3.5 Taster on tap at Barley’s during RBWG 2014. Clear burnt orange color. Thin off-white head. Good thicker lace. Light to medium body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Nice caramel, lightly rich nutty malt, very nice english-style malt profile. Moderate bitter, more sweet taste. Nice balance. Nice light tropical fruit notes. Tasty, balanced ESB, with nice American influences.
3.5 From a bomber I bought at the brewery. Clear amber with a nice beige head that becomes blotchy. A little carbonation floats up. A bready malted aroma is very much to style. The flavor is also quite malty with that bread, grains, and toffee. Hops are light, as they should be. Bitterness and fruit are tasted from them. The yeast gives a cleanness to this beer that is akin to a lager. This is to style and is nicely done.
3.5 Draft at the brewery taproom during RBWG 2014 - Asheville. Pours clear gold with a foamy, white head. Tasty little ESB, does the style justice. Light toasted malts, brown bread. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Further basic, bready malts to finish with light pine needle bitterness. Relatively clean and very drinkable. Good effort.
2.0 [ Tap ][ French Broad ][ 4oz ][ Taster ][ Free ][ 2/7/14 ] >> Clear, highly carbonated orange. Good, off-white creamy foam. Nose is muted, sweet honey, cherry juice box, sugar, mild vegetal DMS. Taste is lemon acid, paper, tart, icky. Can’t get down with these beers.
3.2 Taster at the brewery (RBWG). Maltier than expected. Caramel heavy flavor with some wheaty, grainy notes. Nice noble hops presense.
3.3 On tap at French Broad. Pours a copper color with white head. Grainy, malty, earthy, slight bitter flavors.
3.4 Draft at brew pub darker golden copper. Nose dank hop, mineral, and toffee malt. Taste sweet malt hop font, mild spice, dank hop finish
2.9 Bottle @ Beer Fart Dunegeon Aloft. Pours a burnt orange appearance with a cream colored head. Caramel and nutty aka. Some fruits in the flavor. Moderately sweet. Moderate bitterness. Ok.
2.9 Thanks Andy for the pour at the source. Smells lagarish. Pours a transparent golden. Tastes solid for a ESB. Yeasty, almost marzen like. This places smells awesome!!
3.2 Draft to pint at French Broad (thanks Andy). Looks good; a transparent copperish orange with thin eggshell lacing. Smells of malt biscuit, like a lager yeast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. A solid ESB.
3.6 Flight at heaven and ale with Brian. Bitter but not hoppy. Clean finish. Very good.
3.1 Can. Copper clear and bitter. Nice and sharp. Different yeast than American beer obviously but not Belgium like.
3.5 Nice version of an ESB. Earthy with good balance...............................................................................................................
3.5 On draft. Pours a clear amber-orange with a small white ring of head that leaves no lace. Nose involves caramel malt, spicy and earthy hop notes, maybe a touch of peach. Some sweetness, but a bit more bitterness. Light side of medium bodied, cleansing palate, with a crisp herbal bitter finish. A nice brew, subdued but tasty.
3.2 a much maltier esb than i was expecting, almost like a brown ale or a smoother amber. bright somewhat tangy flavor. an above average, if somewhat off kilter, version of the style.
3.6 12oz can. Amber pour with a big lacy spidery head. Sweet and lightly spicy. Nice. Flavor is bright and lively. Good stuff.
