French Broad Rye Hopper

French Broad Rye Hopper

The Ryehopper began as a fall seasonal and has now found it’s way into our regular line-up. The brewers noticed a lack of rye beers in the Asheville area and wanted to fill that gap. This beer represents assistant brewer Chris Richards’ first recipe released by the brewery. The malted rye contributes both a rounded maltines and a sharp earthy flavor, bridging the maltiness of the barley and the bitterness of the hops. In essence, the Ryehopper is a hoppy rye beer. Seriously, what else did you expect?

3.2 Taster at the brewery- thanks! Think I’d had this one back in the day, spring of 2009, so it’s nice to revist it. Pours a clear gold color with a small off-white head. Notes of toast, earth, grains, florals, light citrus, and rye. Not as hoppy and rye-forward as advertised. Very subdued. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation. Not bad.
3.9 On tap at the tasting room. Orange pour with rich rocky off white head. Nose is immediate fresh, clean flowery and clean citrus bursts with a touch of spicy hops and bready malts. Flavor is floral and light clean citrusy hops. well blended with bready and slightly toasted malt qualities. Pretty nice. Head really lingers.
3.6 Bomber bought at the brewery. Clear and amber with a big beige head that has good retention. Tangerine fruit and light caramel in the aroma and a bit later rye is noted. Rye is definitely the lead flavor. It brings spice and some stickiness. Fruit behind that along with caramel and bread. That rye leaves a long lasting spicy bitter aftertaste. This is all about the rye and it is nicely done.
3.4 On tap at the brewery during a RBWG stop Clear golden with a medium sized white head and good lacing. Aroma is floral, tastes is floral, citrus and rye Decent
3.4 Draft at the brewery taproom during RBWG 2014 - Asheville. Pours clear russet with a creamy head. Some bready malts in here with light pine, grains, orangey citrus. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Lightly toasted bread to finish, moderate sweetness, some pine and ripe citrus. OK. Tasty but simple.
3.3 22oz bomber and XL yellow T-shirt purchased during RBWG 2014. Poured a clear slightly orange but mostly brown body with a smaller foamy super light beige foamy head. Aroma of rye, spice, toast. Body is nice with a full feel overall combined from a medium to stronger body and a supporting carbonation that never goes above average but that is always there throughout the entire sip. Flavor of rye, drak breads, some older fruits, touch of earth and maybe even a kiss of chocolate and a finish of distant citrus rind bitterness. It’s okay but I wish this beer was as good as the brewery itself or even the T-shirt I bought, I look great in yellow.
3.6 On tap at French Broad. Pours a copper color with white head. Hoppy, grassy, spicy, rye flavors. Pretty damn nice.

3.0 Growler from Blind Murphy’s. Nice copper color, with a small, off-white head. The aroma is mild rye, resin, herbs, and pine tar. Malty-sweet flavor, with a relatively mild bitterness through the finish. A metalic twang in the aftertaste. Light to medium body, a little acidic, crisp, and clean. Overall, this is a mild and drinkable rye IPA, but nothing special.
