French Broad Wee Heavy-er

French Broad Wee Heavy-er

Our Wee Heavy-er Scotch Ale is based on our Wee Heavy Scotch Ale recipe, but with a little more-er alcohol. This traditional Scotch Lowland ale is one of our most popular brews. Some of you may remember the original Wee-Heavy from the days when North Carolina brewers could not brew beers containing more than 6% ABV. We would like to take a moment and thank the people of Pop-the-Cap for all their hard work. Gold Medal - 2002 World Beer Championships, Chicago

2.8 Poured from a 12 OZ can into a pint glass. Aroma- Has a very sweet malt and vanilla aroma. Appearance- This beer is a light brown color with a small tan colored head. Taste- Has a mellow malt flavor with a mix of vanilla, i did not care for the aftertaste. Palate- A heavy bodied beer with mild carbonation and an oily texture. Overall- I have not jumped on the "Scotch Ale" bandwagon yet. I have tried several and none of them have blown me away yet. I will try this beer again once I have sampled more of this style.
3.3 Pours a medium caramel brown with a pillowy off white head and has notes of sweet toasted malts, caramel and a light herbal hop. It has a lightly malty sweet carmel taste with a small dark fruit presence at first, then a decent bitterness slips in to balances it out... https://www.facebook.com/KAJIIsBeerReviews
3.6 Nice scotch ale. Dry malty body. Caramel. No head. Bready at first, the rounds out to nice hoppy after taste.
3.4 Can. Poured clear brown color with an average to large tan frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate earthy and toasted malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium toasted sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Good brew.
1.7 French Broad Wee-Heavy-Er Scotch Style Ale has a thin, beige head, a red-brown, somewhat bubbly appearance, some ascending bubbles, and minor lacing left behind. The aroma is of an odd sweet-sour, some peat, a touch of smoke, caramel candy, and brown bread crust. Taste is of the same strange sweet & sour sauce, moderate bitterness, lemon, lime, and bread. Mouthfeel is on the light side, and French Broad Wee-Heavy-Er finishes mostly dry and not unlike Bud Light Lime, in some respects. RJT
2.7 Can. Pours a clear brown with no head. The aroma is scotch and peat. Thin mouth with strong scotch, light smoke, a bit watery.
2.9 Can. Just an average Scotch Ale. Amber color with not much head. Aroma is a malty, caramel, dried fruit smell. The taste is where it falls flat. The flavor starts off fine. Caramel and such. The after-taste is terrible. Chemical-bitter taste.
3.5 From a 22 oz bottle this poured a rich red-amber color with a beige head. No appreciable lacing. Nose of caramel malts, and ripe dark fruit. Medium body. Flavor oaf rich malts and a little bitterness in the finish. Good.
3.3 Rich, deep hazy brown coloured body with a very hazy glow of lighter brown at the bottom and a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of nuts, alcohol, paint, pecans, earth and some milk - quite pungent. Medium-bodied; Assertive flavour of cherries, lemons, turpentine, grass, nuts, alcohol and toasted malt - all over the place, really. Aftertaste shows a complex melange of citrus, malts and caramelised sugars, naturally not making sense together, but working sort-of in a kind of funky mix. Overall, a decent beer with some odd flavours - some work and some don’t, but a decent beer to try if you like the style, since it’s atypical. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Total Wine in Cary, North Carolina on 02-August-2014 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 22-September-2014.
3.4 Type: 12-oz. can Glass: Manzanita pint glass From: Total Wine & More in Ballantyne (Charlotte), N.C. Price: $2.49 Purchased: Sept. 9, 2014 Consumed: Sept. 15, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a dark mahogany semi-opaque color with 2-to-3 fingers of khaki-tan frothy lacing. Healthy dose of bubbles coming up from the bottom at lots of different locations. Minimal lacing on the sides of the glass. Average-to-above average retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 3.80) Smelled dark apple, caramel, toffee, red apple, Scotch whiskey, dark sour fruit and apple juice. Apple I tell you. (Smell - 3.80) Tasted similar to the nose. Got dark apple, red apple, apple juice, caramel, toffee, light butterscotch, Scotch whiskey, honey and more dark sour fruit. (Taste - 3.53) Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. Alcohol was well hidden. (Feel - 3.87) This was a better than average scotch beer, although I feel like I slightly overrated it (without looking at the eventual ratings). (Overall - 3.79) 3.68 83 B
1.8 12 oz. can from Lighthouse. Something was off here. It pours a clear brown color with an off white head. The aroma is fruity with green apple, plum and phenols. More high alcohols, chemicals and artificial sweetener as it warms. Ugh. The flavor is bitter and sour with some lactic plum and bitter toast. A little more sour apple. I’m hoping this is a packaging issue and it’s not supposed to taste like this. Pretty undrinkable.
3.1 Can from a trade with Collin. Thanks! Poured into a snifter at home. Deep amber that was not quite opaque. Aroma is unique with bread dough, pie crust, wood, nuts, varnish, and leather. The taste is wood chips, dough, pie crust, caramel, bark, and booze. The finish is fairly light, but some booze and wood. Medium body. Kind of a weird one.
2.8 (Backlog) Bottle, thanks to jtclockwork for helping me figure out which beer this was. Hazy dark pour with light head. Spice, wood, dark malts, sweet tones.
3.4 Appearance: pours with a thick tan head, the beer is a very dark brown with hues of maroon or ruby at the edges, head dissipates pretty quick Aroma: creamy, sweet, dark roasted malt, smells good but faint Taste: some toasty grain, a slight bitter finish, not very sweet, pretty good Palate: average carbonation, moderate mouthfeel, leaves mouth dry Overall: kind of a simple scotch ale but it’s really good, highly drinkable, the alcohol is very well hidden, not overly thick on the tongue like some other scotch ales
3.5 Sample @ French Broad during RBWG. Deep amber pour. Roasted malts, sort of ashy. Honey and toffee sweetness. Pie crust dropped in compost. The taste has some bitter dark roasted coffee character. Almost ashy. Toasted nut and peanut brittle. Toffee. Smooth and oily, substantial. Nice effort.
3.1 Can to tulip. Looks good for the style; a semi-transparent amberish brown with foamy off-white head. Smells malty with notes of caramel. Tastes like it smells with a bit of roast/toast. Average on the palate. Okay.
3.4 Had on tap at the ball game. Just average for me. For a beer with a heavy-er in the name I expect darker, fuller mouthfeel and less carbonation. Pours an amber/brown somewhat transparent color. Aroma is mostly sweet malt - toasty, caramel, toffee. Easy drinking and somewhat balanced but too much on the malty team for me. Not much complexity. Not bad, just not all that interesting.
3.3 Draft at the brewery during RBWG. Pours a clear dark amber to brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have, well, malt, malt and more malt. Caramel, toasted bread, mild earthy notes, hints of buttery toffee. Decent, but no complexity here.
4.2 Nice smooth beer. Good amber coloring. Great with food or just hanging out. Drink this one regularly.
3.3 Bottle shared via Dmac; much thanks as always dude. Pours out a moderate reddish hued brown with a small off white head. Aroma is of toffee, caramel, light toast, some earthy notes. Taste is toffee, caramel, earth, toast, milk chocolate, burnt grain.
3.5 22oz bomber from the brewery during RBWG. Poured a thinner density foamy super light beige head sitting on top of a deep brown body with orange/brown edges. Aroma is earthy, peat, light chocolate, bad citrus, wet old mowed grass.Flavor is actually a bit better with lots of similar notes. Earth, peat, chocolate, some old grass, dough, touch of nut shell and tea. Solid, better with warmth.
3.6 Draft at the brewery taproom during RBWG 2014 - Asheville. Pours clear brown with a modest, mostly-white foam head. Very tasty stuff with a rich malt character, including notes of ripe fruits, dates. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Creamy texture. Sugary finish with mild warmth, bread, alcohol, more well-ripened fruits, dried fruits. Quite tasty and nicely executed for the style.
2.0 [ Tap ][ French Broad ][ 4oz ][ Taster ][ Free ][ 2/7/14 ] >> Highly carbonated clear brown pour. Okay head. Nose is brown sugar, cherry juice box, raw malt, mild vegetal DMS. Taste is vegetal, lemon, dogfood, tart. No...
3.3 Taster at the brewery (RBWG). Nice toffee presence. Some odd cereal grainy notes in the flavor, but some nice sweetness and peat overall. On another note, thanks to the welcoming staff who put out a meat and cheese plate for us!
3.3 On tap at French Broad. Pours a brown color with white head. Caramel, toffee, malty flavors.
3.2 On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear deep amber with a light brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has notes of earthy grain with a bit of bread and hay. Flavor is similar with an earthy dark grain and a bit of a hay note.
3.3 On tap @ French Broad. Pours a burnt orange appearance with a white head. Hazelnut, toffee, caramel aroma. Moderately sweet. Light bitterness. Some earth. Fine.
3.3 Taster on tap at the brewery. Clear burnt orange color. Thin off-white head. Some ropes and dots of lace. Nice caramely malt notes, lightly spicy. Some toasty flavors. Some bitter, moderate sweet taste. Medium to bigger body, lightly slick. Smooth, lighter carbonation, kind of crisp. Solid scotch ale, but not outstanding for the style.
3.6 Copper pour with creamy off white head and lace. Aroma is caramel malt and rock candy. Sweet malt with a nice floral hop. Medium body with good carbonation nice beer
3.7 Poured a one-finger head from a bomber. Aroma is carmel and fruit and the taste was pretty much the same. Very good scotch ale.
