Fuller's Past Masters 1891 XX Strong Ale

Fuller's Past Masters 1891 XX Strong Ale

The first beer in the Past Masters series we have chosen to recreate is XX, a strong ale which is perfect for bottle conditioning. Brewed at 7.5% ABV, with the original recipe first used on September 2, 1891, it is dark, rich and full flavoured, with a distinctly warming character.

XX is deeply satisfying, and an unforgettable experience for those who love traditional English beer.

Fuller’s Past Masters XX Strong Ale will be available in 500ml bottles from the Fuller’s Brewery Shop and in selected Fuller’s pubs. You can also buy Past Masters online.

3.9 Very well balanced ale, smooth, rich and enjoyable. Really traditional taste maybe?
3.8 En god strong ale. Smak och doft av humle, malt, karamell, fikon, torkad frukt med toner av choklad och kaffe. Bra beska, lagom söt.
3.4 50 cl bottle. Originally rated on 20110402. Pours clear copper color with a small head. Aroma of toffee, some ripe fruits, caramel malts and mild spice notes. Flavor of caramel malts, ripe fruits, resiny hops, some toffee and hay. Decent.
4.4 Bottle 0,50L. Clear copper colour with one finger of beige head. This beer has aroma of piney hops, grapefruit, raisin, smoke, oak barrels and alcohol. Taste is heavy bitter and so is the aftertaste. It has medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation and metallic finish feel. Very good balanced beer.
3.5 Chris O’s FullersGales Tasting Feb 2012. Amber. Aged aroma. Light fruit. Soft carbonation. Pleasant. Some warmth. Drinkable.
3.6 500ml bottle, bbe end of 2013. Pours a deep dark orange with a small off-white head. Aroma has sweet and fruity notes of figs, plums, caramel and brown sugar. Taste has figs, sweet malt, light marzipan and almonds, earthy notes. Finishes dry with a pleasant bitter bite. Mouthfeel is smooth and crisp with medium carbobation.
3.3 [bottle at BJCP study session] Potent grain and pumpernickel aroma with some raisins and ethanol and oranges. Almost clear dark orange under off-white wisps. Grainy flavour that develops into ethanol and then an assertive bitterness. Slightly nutty and oxidized. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, nutty bitter finish.
3.5 aatuu lasiin kuparinruskeana ja kirkkaana, vaahto on parin sormen levyinen ja tasaisesti katoava. Hieman rosoinen haju on pähkinäinen, karamellinen, puinen (kosteaa puuta), keksinen ja tietyllä tapaa mausteinen. Maku on makean pähkinäinen, karamellinen (etenkin jälkimaussa), puinen, keksinen ja hieman mainen. Suutuntuma on melko katkera ja melko täyteläinen. Katkeruus tuntuu jollain tavalla aika ronskilta ja epätasaiselta. Kokonaisuutena Arkadiasta tuotu pullo on melko maistuva, mutta hieman kulmikkaan oloinen vahva britti.
3.8 Bottle 0.5l from Alko Arkadia, Helsinki. Colour is copper with small white head. Aromas and flavours are caramel, nuts, toffee, fruits, malts and hops. Very complex, great beer.
4.7 Bottle at the Duke of Wellington, Dunedin. Great yeasty beer. Aromas of caramel and cheese. Taste is sweet and sour, with very long length. Palate is creamy, and full bodied. Amber, with a frothy head.
3.9 Bottle at ÖÖWF 2012. Aroma: full and rich malt aroma, caramel, syrup, toffee.Taste: round and malty body, dried fruit, prunes, burnt sugar. Good.
3.0 Chestnut orange, esters, higher alcohols, sweet, pineapples, honey medium carb, alcohol burn
3.2 Bright orange in colour with thick creamy head. Spicy malt aroma, hint of honey. Roasty mouthfeel, warm tingly tongue. I would have drunk this back in the day, very nice session beer.
3.6 Fra flaske på DØE festivalen 2011: Deilig aroma av engelske humler med bl.a. gress og kanel. Mørk gylden farge og deilig smak av humler og litt karamell. Hurra for de som holder tradisjonene i hevd!
3.6 Bottle pours amber with off white head. Aroma malty bready Taste is sweetish malty caramel with a light hop bitterness running through. Very warming but alcohol is well contained medium body. Decent English ale
3.3 50cl bottle. Alcoholic nose, otherwise neutral. Hazy copper color. Balanced taste but leaves somewhat empty.
3.3 50cl bottle. Hazy copper color with white head. Aroma of hops and little whiskey maybe, oak. Little malty taste, good body, hops. Basic, nothing impressing.
3.9 trong fuggles, earthy, woody, strong moderate bitterness, extreme balance. Very well put together alcohol. So much like I would want a English Strong ale to be. Superb
3.7 Bottle. Nice English hop nose, grassy, cinnamon, nuts. Deep amber color. Nicely hoppy flavor, tangy, caramel. Nice stuff, really hits the spot.
3.8 Really liked this - leafy, grassy citrussy hops run wildly over a heavy toffee malt body, but well integrated and cohesive. One of the beers that just feels right with a long ragged citrus finish. Gets a bit dull as it warms, but the impression is already one of deep admiration for a fine product.
3.8 Aroma has sweet malt, dark bread, light hoppiness. Mahogany hazy, beige medium long head. Taste is slightly sweet, just bit bitterness. Finish is bit dry. Medium body, soft bit light feel. Quite malty and thus bit one-sided also. Keeping traditions alive is appreciated by me. ok.
3.7 500 ml bottle. Sparkling amber colour. Small white head. Mellow malty aromas. Sugary caramel flavours. Soft carbonation level. Earthy hops. Slightly metallic, but nicely balanced. Enjoyable.
3.8 Poured from a 500ml bottle into a snifter glass (Apr ’12) to a light copper brown colour with a very small white head. The head vanished without trace in a minute or two leaving but a few bubbles atop the beer! The nose is all about dried/matured fruits. Dates, figs, sultanas maybe a little almond in there? A sweet alcohol aroma is present but in no way excessive! Also a lingering toffee/caramel note. The taste runs fairly parallel with the nose in the dried fruit scenario. A sweet malty flavour also comes into play allied to some subtle hopping and a little caramel. Mouthfeel - this beer is a little over carbonated for my liking with a good medium body. Overall a good strong ale from Fullers, well balanced in terms of flavour and strength, no real sense of 7.5% when drinking. It is just let down a little by the carbonation in my opinion.
2.9 Amber beer with fruity notes and malty aroma. The flavour begins sweet and ends on a fruity and metallic note with a touch of bitterness. Quickly forgotten.
3.1 soap water aroma, fruit, copper color, clear, white foam, light sweetness, lightly bitter, salty, light body, oily feel, soft carbonation, bitter,

3.7 Bottle at Danske Ølentusiasters Ølfestival 2012, Copenhagen Hazy light amber color. Mild aroma of malt, whiskey, cereals. Good body; good malt and caramel flavor, with a vanilla, wood and whiskey note; alcohol warmth; drier final.
3.5 50cl bottle from Alko arkadia. Bbe end 2013. Poured amber with a thin white head. Dried fruits, wood, licorice in aroma, light sourness as well. Flavor has malt, lots of wood, vanilla, dates and alcohol. Long warming, woody finish. Feels somewhat raw.
