Fuller's Past Masters 1931 Old Burton Extra (OBE)

Fuller's Past Masters 1931 Old Burton Extra (OBE)

First seen as a one-off cask release at Ealing beer festival in July 2012. Released in bottles in August 2012.

The third beer in the Past Masters series was first brewed on Thursday, September 10th 1931. The origins of the Old Burton style have changed over the course of the 20th Century, but this version is brewed to the authentic recipe - a true recreation of a wonderful long-lost beer. A rich, golden ale with a big malt character and an incredible balance of sweetness and warmth on the palate.

3.6 Bottle - Light biscuit malts and caramel. Hazy copper with a rich white head. Lots of rich toffee, dark fruit and brown sugar. Almost like a light barley wine. Quite nice and rich.
3.7 500ml bottle from the brewery online shop. Pours clear dark amber, thin off-white head. Aromas of raisins, dark sugar, toffee. Taste is burnt toast, toffee, Herbal bitterness at the end. Hides the strength well. Nice.
3.4 (bottle) Hazy, dark amber colour with a beige medium-sized foamy head. Dark malty, moderately toasted malty taste with nutty notes, caramel, dried fruits (raisins) and a tinge of alcohol. Mildly sweet and slightly bitter flavour, medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Dark malt character with notes of dried fruits, caramel and hoppy spice in the background; sweet-bitter, toasty and mildly fruity finish with a touch of warming alcohol. Likeable and rounded brew but not as exciting as expected. 04.VII.14
3.5 Bottle from Ales By Mail. Pours clear dark amber with a nice looking 1" creamy off-white head. Aroma is malty with some red ripe fruits. Taste is light sweet, malty with some meaty cherries, lingering berries, nice but one dimentional.
3.0 Dark ruby. Dense and persistent beige head and lacing. Aroma of dark caramel, port, plum jam.
3.5 Excellent big ABV with a nice head. Resins and some sweetness with astringent alcohol burn in the back ground. Overall nice for a wintery evening.
3.7 Bottled. Rubyish brown colour with a mediumsized slightly off-white head. Aroma is sweet malts, some mild bready and toffeeish notes along with a nice herbal, grassy and floral touch to it. Flavour is floral, grassy and herbal along with mild alcohol and some sweet malts as well. Very balanced and pleasant to drink.
3.6 Bottle from Old Stand, Mullingar [040614] Chestnut brown, clear, big frothy white head, some lacing Aroma of fruity caramel, raisin, soft toffee, some alcohol Taste of soft caramel, raisin and sultana fruits, some toffee, bit boozy for the abv but not disconcerting, nice but less complex than expected Palate - soft carb, medium body, smooth, fairly swet, dab of alochol, Finish as main flavour with more warming alcohol Overall - Only got a slight mineraly edge on the aroma initially which dissipates. Quite a pleasant warming smooth ale
3.5 average frothy offwhite head. good lacing. mostly diminishing. flat thick brownish-orange body. aroma: heavy malt, caramel, orange. if: moderate sweet light bitter. ff: moderate bitter; long duration. palate: light medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, moderate alcoholic finish. Amargor lupulado. Elegância inglesa. Toques amadeirados no paladar.
3.8 Bottle, pours a deep dark amber with a fast-settling beige head, nose is caramel malt with hints of butter and toast, and a spicy herby woody edge. Dry herbal bitterness over a sweet toffee body, strong warming alcohol bite, a little burnt marmalade (hey, it's Fullers...) and a dry bitter-sweet finish. Yum. Re-rate 18 months on, less caramel and more oakiness, a little drier and somehow toastier. Re-rated at eight years old, it's deep mahogany with notes of cocoa and a hint of leather emerging alongside the treacle toffee. It's quite a bit drier now, though still herbal, bitter and lively.
3.7 Clear, dark copper. Small offwhite head. Fruity and malty aroma, some caramel. Flavour is malty and caramellysweetness. Soft mouthfeel and slightly bitter finish. Smooth. Nice.
3.6 red into brown, clear with an off white head. Some bread notes in the aroma, some malt. Nice balance, not too malty and not so sweet with still a hint of bitterness left in it. Balanced strong ale which follows the english style to the letter.
3.6 (Bottle) Reddish amber colour with lasting, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with caramel, red fruit, roasty malt, dark bread, dried fruit, a touch of chocolate and spicy hops. Malty, roasted taste with notes of caramel, red fruit, dark bread, figs, brown sugar, orange peel, a touch of chocolate and a balanced, spicy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a slight sweetness. Tasty and quite well balanced for its strength. Nice one.
3.8 A cor é linda, a espuma tambem.
3.6 A dark coppery beer with a quite big, long lasting and blond head. The nose of nuts, citrusfruits, wood and orange marmelade. Quite disorganized but also interesting aroma. Taste of nuts, wood, fresh citrusfruits, also some bread and marmelade. The taste is quite dry. Pleasant and smooth to drink with medium body, surprisingly light to drink. Good and balanced beer but not a magical. The good quality beer from Fuller’s, again.
3.4 500 mL bottle at the Mad Bishop and Bear in Paddington. Dark red-brown with fair head. Strong and pleasant malty beer, a bit like a strong German Helles but with extra bitterness and some Burton salts. Nice hop-malt combination in the aroma. A good English beer.
4.0 Bottle from The Bottle Shop Canterbury and drunk on the train to Ashford. Milk chocolate malty aroma. Strong but tasty sime figs and prunes. Good. Some peppery hop on the finish lasting bitterness. Really malty fruity like juicy figs and juicy raisins and sultanas. Lovely really. No real heat. Sweetish. I really like it. Smashing
3.6 Bottle at home, purchased off of the website consumed Thursday 13th March 2014 Pours dark copper great clarity off-white head that soon ebbs away to a rim, mid carbonation. This is a malt forward beer both on nose and in mouth but there is a good lasting underlying bitterness, fruit that has been steeped in alcohol. Fairly straightforward and simplistic but its pleasant and I consider the £18 for 12 bottles damn good value. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6
3.5 Dark red bronse colour with creamy foam. Sherry, raisins malt in the aroma. Malt, raisins, toffee, with dry bitterness in the aftertaste, glue. High in carbon.
2.8 Its got that rich dark copper cognac color with a 3/16" head for all you Brits and yanks out there and 5mm for the rest of the world. Fuck off, metric system! Impossible to rate a beer when fucksticks are smoking. Godddamn!!! Probabbly smells like toffee and kent goldings but I can’t fucking smell it over their aireborne ashtrays! Tastes like bitter, fizzy vanishing brew. Ok. Pretty decent, from what’s left of the atmosphere. I know its not fair! Blame the smokers!
3.3 Deep amber body, medium palate and with a thin film of foam. Smells like caramel, dark fruits and tastes the same. Plums, raisins, berries, caramel and some hops that tie the flavors together. Bitter aftertaste of medium duration and low carbonation that brings up the aromas. Has some alcohol in the aroma at the end.
3.6 500 ml bottle shared. Poured a dark amber-red body with a beige head, not so thick or lasting. Aromas of dark fruits and caramel. A little alcohol present, especially at higher temperatures. taste was the same with alcohol dominating everything and some dark fruits, mainly plums and some resins. The aftertaste is "hoppy" and fruity and somewhat medium long. light-medium body with light carbonation.
3.6 1st January 2014 Clear deep amber beer, good pale cream coloured head. Palate is sharply crisp. Minerals. Light malt with a little cream. Touch of bitter toffee. Over ripe orange and pithy fruit. Whisper of marmalade. Light touches of floralness and bitterness before a minerally crisp finish. Slightly over carbonated but pretty tasty.
3.4 It’s dark amber with a creamy and lasting head. The aroma has notes of sweet caramel, fruits and malt. The flavor is sweet with a light bitterness and notes of preserved fruits, malt, caramel, and the finish is slightly dry and a bit spicy!
3.7 Appearance: Clear ruby with cm thick ivory head. Aroma: Bread dough/biscuit, note of dried fruit. Taste: Medium bitterness, low/medium sourness and low sweetness. Palate: Thick smooth texture, light/medium body, average carbonation, lingering dried fruit, malty, astringent finish with a hint of caramel, pepper and alcohol warmth. Comments: Very good and glass lace.

3.7 Bottle@Barrowboy and Banker, London Bridge - Copper/brown pour with good white head. Reddish-brown pour with a white head. Sweet dark malts, nutty, toffee, caramel, choc, some dried dark fruit, slight spice, nice sweet/balance. Great!
