At Fulton, we love hops. That star in our logo is made out of hops, in case you hadn’t noticed. Of course, the hops plant contributes to the character of all of our beers, but sometimes we just want more. That’s why we decided to brew the Sweet Child of Vine. Generous quantities of Simcoe and Glacier hops are added throughout the boil. Then, late in the fermentation process, we infuse the Sweet Child with another dose of Glaciers, imparting a bouquet of hop aroma that veritably bursts forth upon serving. But don’t let all this talk of hops mislead you. The Sweet Child has a serious malt backbone to stand up to all those hops, creating a delightful balance that will keep you coming back for more. It’s an IPA, Fulton-style.

3.512oz bottle pour is amber with off white head aroma is citrus and light hops taste is slight citrus sweet malt and a slight pine dry finish
2.8Can. Thanks, N! Pours a clear medium/dark amber with a sudsy pale tan head that goes away quickly. Weird brown bread and boiled marjoram nose. Watery body with flabby carb. Brown bread and boiled marjoram mid palate. Did this get stale, or was it always like this? Something went wrong with the hopping; the hop notes are even flatter than a simple hop tea.
2.9Copper color with a significant amount of hop chunks floating through out and an off white head. Light hop aroma. Light hop flavor and solid malt body.
Notes: On bottle at Stone Arch in MSP, Mar ’17.
3.3Minnesota Trip Beer #19. Keg at Scuzzy’s, 5/7/16. Clear copper, large creamy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of mild herbal hops. The taste is herbal hops and caramel malts. Medium bodied, strong lingering bitterness.
5.0I always thought Surlys Furious was the best until I had Fulton Sweet Child of Vine, (on tap).It blew Surly’s away. Every beer they produce is top notch. And they bottle it (not can’s). Highly recommended on tap, but bottled is pretty darn good as well.
3.2Draft. Pours bronze with thick light beige head and lacing. Grapefruit and earthy grass hop aroma. Bread crust malt with earthy hops and grapefruit notes. A maltier IPA; not an especially hoppy IPA.
3.316oz can. hazy dark orange with a small off whitehead. Delicate fruity, toasted caramelish. Average bitterness and citrus, crisp fruity. Light yeasty. Palate is little dry and bitter.
2.5Poured an orange color with a white head. Aroma was of herbal hopsand caramel. Flavor is similar, sweet bitter, old, not wanting more.
3.4Tap at Fulton. Hazy orange pour. Big English malt body, toffee and big citrus hops. Citrus hop aroma.
3.2draft 2/26/16 (Crowne Plaza-Bloomington)-Pours amber with a decent head. Aroma of hops, malt, and sweetness. Taste of the same. This medium bodied brew is well balanced.
3.5On tap at Tony Roma’s, Mall of America. Sweet toffee malt in balance with pine and stone fruit and with strawberry notes. Almost clear bronze under a lacy white ring. Flavour is a balance of sweet caramel and assertive bitterness with apricot, pine, and a little pineapple. Medium body, medium carbonation, crisp.
3.4Aroma - caramel and pine hops.
Appearance - the body is hazed mahogany. The head is 2+" and beige in color. The head slowly settles. Great lacing.
Taste - rich caramel malt, pungent and piney hops. There is also a little bit of herby hops.
Palate - medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation, dry abrupt finish.
2.8Aroma isn’t bad; appearance is pretty good Taste at first, while seeming more like a PA versus an IPA and fairly balanced, then in the finish lost that with an almost burning bitterness that was unpleasant though thankfully not too long lasting.
2.5355ml bottle. This is not the greatest, some lemon-lime notes, pretty crappy.
2.7Bottle, shared by me... in my dining room... just now.
Pours a full on orange color with a big tight white head and some lacing on the glass.
The aroma is sweet tarts, aspirin, melon and citrus forward hops, and a mild bit of crystal malt.
The flavor is leafy like romaine lettuce, lightly bitter but still manages an astringent finish, and has a bit of sweet tart flavor. The actual hop flavor is reasonably low but features a bit of citrus zest and a little bit of floral character.
Um, I swear this was reasonably good on draught, but wow!
3.516 oz can to pint. Pours hazy copper, creamy beige head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine and grass. Taste of the same with a green tea bitter finish. Mouthful is mod syrupy, appropriate carb.
2.8Tap in MSP airport. Remembered as a good IPA, this tap seemed boozy and off putting. Very possibly a bad snapshot.
3.316iz can shared. Poured a medium dark orange with white head. The aroma is strictly English ipa. Medium malt base and a medium hop aroma light citrus scent. The flavor is more of the same nice mellow malt and a medium hop flavor not a west coast or east coast ipa but an English ipa. Very drinkable.
3.5Pours a dark amber color with white head. Nice hop aromas and flavors. Ever so slightly too bitter
3.7On tap at the Tipsy Cow in Madison, WI. for pre-GToM festivities. Dispensed to a shaker showing a hazed, amber color, with light tan head foam, and some wavy cling to the lacing. The nose was subtle perfume, light citrus, and resin. Medium bodied, with decent carbonation, the taste was again citrus, with moderate but forceful pine, and an earthy, citrusy, and rind-like hop bitterness. A little tanginess came along for the ride. Liked it!
Again, this time on tap at the Lolo American Kitchen & Craft Bar in the MSP Airport in St. Paul, Minn.. Dispensed to a shaker displaying a clear & bright, brownish, amber/gold, with persistent, off white froth, and spiraling cling to the lacing. Add a little pit fruit, biscuity malt, and slight, caramel sweetness to the above review, and the impression is somewhat similar. +.1
3.312 ounce bottle
After a few free pints of this during a social event I picked up a bottle to try at home. It improved slightly over the experience with a plastic cup yet it still lacks that little extra to set it apart. The result was not a total waste though; at least I know one brewery to skip on the next trip to Minneapolis as far as stocking up on singles.
Aroma / Appearance - The polished pennies shine in the glass with carbonation trapped under a dusky ivory head. Citrus notes, flowers, and hop driven iced tea lend an earthiness that feels Midwestern to the core.
Flavor / Palate - Malted iced tea with a dose of floral hops briefly sparks the palate. It then falls apart after a few seconds. The unremarkable finish lacks the hop bite that I anticipated for the style. Toning back the malts might give it what it needs to achieve something other than a middle of the road daily drinker for the Minnesota crowd.
3.5Very nice IPA. Tons of aroma, lots of fresh citrus and grass. Sweet and a bit unbalanced, but it was what I wanted at the time anyway. Tried at the Mill City Tavern at the Minneapolis airport in 2015.
3.8Bottled sample from Whole Foods in Minneapolis. Serious malt backbone is a good description. Much darker than I expected. Very good
3.7Smells like booze and subtle floral hops. Mild head on the pour to chalice. Great frothy mouth feel. Taste is piney citrus with a well pronounced malt profile. Nearly qualifies at British style IPA in my opinion. But that?s just me. So far my favorite Fulton from a bottle, should probably head to the location and have some taps.
3.0Bottle (trade with non Rate Beer member); pours clear amber with an off white head; aroma is hops, pine, and malt; taste is bitter and hoppy but has some caramel and malt notes; has a dry bitter finish; fairly average IPA
3.6Draft pours amber with a off white head. Aroma of malts, citrus and floral . Taste is citrus, caramel and some grass.
3.5Poured from a 12oz bottle.
Not a lot of aroma, malt forward.
Not a bad ipa, but not be best.
Better fresh and has a nice after taste. But has the potential to be a malt bomb if not consumed fresh.
3.4Nose is mostly toasty malt with a fairly herbal hop presence. Some light caramel notes. Amber hazy pour nice head some lace. Flavors of toast, someone sweetness, herbal hops some dank bitterness. Balanced but just not assertive in one way or another for me to love it. Not bad though.
4.5I was addicted to this stuff at one point where I was getting a 6 pack a week. A very solid ipa that’s not overly bitter or citrusy. Pretty smooth stuff at 6.4 abv.
3.0A hazy amber beer with a small off-white head. The aroma is floral, piney hops and toasty malt. The flavor is the same.
