Originally designed to be a hoppier version of our flagship Saison, the accidental (but fortuitous) addition of two extra bags of Munich malt balanced the hop bitterness leaving us this very unique Imperial Saison. Tropical fruit flavors coming from the unique New Zealand hop variety, Rakau.
Notes of passion fruit, mango, peach, pepper and ginger.

3.7It pours hazy clear orange with a white head. The aroma is very fruity along with some must and rich malt along with bit of saison earth. It has a medium body with fairly sharp carbonation. The taste is drier with woodiness and spice and more saison character. Pretty good.
3.4Pour is a hazy orange with a large white head. Aroma is funky yeast ester, banana and clove. Flavor is a super spice and pepper. A little too much for my liking. Finish is a bit hot with a decent yeast ester. This was a little too amped up for me to give this a better score. A bit too hot and peppery.
3.6On tap. Pours a hazy golden color with a small head. Aroma of tropical fruit, with yeast and spice. Taste of tropical fruit, some yeast, bit of spice and funk. some bitterness with slightly tart finish. Moderate body, well crafted with a subtle tart presence. tasty.
3.4Bottle. It poured a hazy orange color with a white head. The aroma was of some funk, spices and a touch of hops. The taste was similar to the aroma with more funk, spices, hops and medium carbonation with a dry aftertaste.
Not bad.
4.0On draft at craft beer cellar Clayton
Aroma 7 /10: bready yeasty aroma
Appearance 4 /5: clear golden amber with white frothy head
Palate 4 /5: full and robust mouthfeel with bubbly champagne like fizzy carbonation
Taste 8/10: classic Saison flavors, very heavy on the yeast, with bitter hops and faint pineapple esters
Overall 17/20: a solid Saison but I'm not as excited about it as I thought I would for some reason. The yeast is almost a little too strong up front, overpowering the more delicate fruit esters. It does bloom as it sits at room temp over time, though
Final: 4.0
4.111.2floz bottle, BOD: 12.05.2017, $2 single, tulip glass. Appears a hazy dark gold with less than a finger or white head. Papaya, cantaloupe, and banana aromas are especially noticed, because they are atypical in such a beer. Texture is full-bodied in its heft, and carbonation is moderate.
Taste is an exercise in the three main components of beer besides water: yeast lends certain phenols that lightly touch on candy banana and mild melon fruits; hops provide some citrus zest and light bitterness, malts underlie everything with cereal grain and light-medium sweetness I consumeth easily.
4.0a rainy day beer while waiting on dinner.
3.4330 ml bottle. Pours a dull cloudy amber with moderate head. Aromas of brett, fuzzy peach and candied citrus. Flavors of dried tropical fruit, earthy Belgian yeast and esters, and cottony peach skin with a dose of wet malts. OK
3.8At BJs in Aurora, Colorado, pours a clear golden color with an ephemeral white head. Nose is cloves, with barnyard funk and spice. Taste is spicy with nice funk, cloves. Finishes on the same funky barnyard spicy notes. Quaff Score 7 / 10 .....8-3-7-3-17
3.6enjoyed; bottle to glass; trying a few more FW after visit to brewery. citrus in aroma; peaches? yea; peaches and beer is the aroma. nice fruit sweetness up front; bubblegum - sounds sweet but balanced with light tart. enjoyable drink; will have again.
3.7Bottle, 355 ml from Park Plaza Liquor & Deli, Prescott. Hazy orange, white head. Fruity, pear, tropical fruit, barnyard, spicy, yeasty. Light to medium carbonation. Medium bodied.
3.5Bottle from tavour. A little sweet with candy like peppercorns. Nice but not really blown away.
3.6Tap at aster cafe. Hazy orange with small white head. Citrus nose. Tart and fruity. Medium body. Refreshing, tart, but decent. Pretty tasty.
3.4Bottle. Hazy copper. Frothy grayish cream colored head. Aroma of funk yeast, bubblegum, bread and slight tropical fruit. Tastes yeasty, funky and slightly bitter and sweet. Medium bodied.
4.5This is quite a unique ale, a saison/German hoppy wheat beer hybrid. Pours lightly into a tulip glass, revealing a frothy cappuccino like foam. The honey nectar color is spectacular, looks almost like fresh squeezed oj. The hops combo is well crafted, balancing sour funk with earthy unfiltered style tanginess. Notes of wheatgrass and green apples. This is an extremely satisfying, exceptional ale. Cheers Funkwerks!
3.7Refrigerated 75 cl brown bottle poured into a glass. Clear deep golden with small white head. Aroma is tropical fruit, pepper, and spices.
4.4B+. Pours a hazy golden color with white head. Very fruity and also very drinkable
2.8Barrel aged 2016. Fruity but not overly sweet. Interest continues with each sip and is really not too bad. Surprised how well I like this.
3.9Cloudy golden orange, ample foamy white head. Dried apricot, hay, light resin. Some honey and coriander. Fairly bitter, some sweetness. Quite spicy. Medium oily body, extremely long finish that has a good amount of funk to it. Good.
3.5Bottled August 2016. Hazy orangish color with a large head. Funky barn aroma with some mango. Banana and yeast flavor. Hay. Very dry. Full bodied.
4.2Clean grassy with slight fruit nose; a lingering foamy head that turns lacey. Smooth mouthfeel with a slightly bitter citrus (mango & ginger...yes, pepper and peach...not so much) taste and a clean, back throat quenching finish.
3.8Pour is hazy golden orange with an ample white head. Aromas of apricot, orange, pepper, glue, and ginger. As with all of Funkwerks offerings, there is a house taste that seems a little artificial. That said, the tropic king seems to vault over the other beers I’ve tried thus far. Solid beer, yet not to the level of greatness within the style.
3.4Smells of funk and yeast with some tropical fruit thrown in. Very pretty bright orange color with a small white ring of foam. Tastes earthy and fruity with some funk in the aftertaste. Low carbonation in the palate, very smooth. This was ok but saison is not my favorite style.
3.6Bottle. Pours pale gold with a fluffy white head that settles to a rocky film and collar. Aroma is light funk with some mango fruit bubblegum like yeast and malt. Taste is funk with mango papaya and bubblegum yeast malt. Palate is medium buttery and finishes oily yet dry. Dig it!
3.8Bottle share at Evernote in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is light funk, bubblegum, Belgian candy sugar, fruity yeast esters. Taste is light malts, light bread, cloves, some funk and fruit. Very Belgian in style. Great mix of flavors.
3.7Tap at Busters on 28th. Very slightly hazy yellow pour with a white film head. Saison yeast, bubblegum, some tropical fruit. Pretty solid. Soft palate.
3.3This one feels very Belgian to me. Pours slightly hazy golden. Initially a huge frothy head but that comes down to a still decent layer of foam. Aroma is full of spicy yeast, together with candy sugar sweetness. Candy sugar is coming out also in the taste. Body is quite heavy and thick, taste caramelly, sugary and yeasty. If you come over of this initial heavy feel it has, some fruits come out as well, peach and mango maybe but a bit too much powerful yeast spices and sugary heaviness are not letting me to enjoy that fully. Still not bad but I was hoping for a more funky beer (Funkwerks - funky??? Too much to ask?).
3.9Golden orange in color... Aroma of Belgian malts, toffee, bubble gum, Candi sugar... Flavor is sweet and fruity, bubble gum notes, some tropical fruits... Really good
3.8Pours amber with a nice big head that lasts. I assume the color is bc of strength. Strong peppery aroma. Delicious. A bit thick bodied for a saison. Has a bit of sweetness, thanks to its size.
3.5Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Bright golden color, hazy. The aroma is a bit too much vegetable, but also lightly fruity. Good body, sweet, spicy, a bit woody. Good, but a bit too American, which is a flaw.
