Funky Buddha Morning Wood

Funky Buddha Morning Wood

What’s better than beer for breakfast? How about a little Morning Wood. This Imperial version of Maple Bacon Coffee Porter is aged in Bourbon barrels for months, lending smoothness to the smokey, salty, rich combo of maple syrup, fresh roasted coffee, and bacon.

THIS IS NOT THE SAME ENTRY AS WIDE AWAKE IT’S MORNING - Bourbon Aged.

This beer was aged in bourbon barrels, while Wide Awake It’s Morning - Bourbon Aged was aged on Buffalo Trace soaked oak cubes

4.1 Pours a pitch black coloration with a large, creamy head. Smell is quite sweet and dominated by maple syrup, with hints of lightly roasted, caramel malt and chocolate, coffee and bourbon notes. Taste follows the nose, being quite sweet and absolutely dominated by maple syrup and caramel, lightly roasted malt, with lighter notes of coffee, chocolate and lovely bourbon notes, as well as a certain earthy, woody oak presence. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness and an almost cloying maple sweetness lingering in the aftertaste. Thick mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation. While this is a really nice stout, it's still highly overrated in my personal opinion, due to a poor balance that heavily favors an intense maple sweetness that almost drowns out most of the other flavors. Its one saving grace are some lovely bourbon and oak notes that both complement the flavor profile while at the same time adding some much needed depth. I'm certainly not getting any "salty bacon" from this either. Certainly enjoyable, but far from world-class in my personal opinion.
4.5 32oz crowler pour is an opaque black with khaki head. Nose is very cool, chocolate and coffee and maple, licorice, malt, a little rootbeer candy. Flavor is sweet but not overly so, tootsie rolls, maple, chocolate, rootbeer. Finishes sticky with plenty of maple but damn, so so smooth.
3.8 Crowler at the early December Ratebeer DC Tasting. Poured a nearly pitch black color with a small tan head. Aroma was roasted malts, an immediate blast of coffee and maple. Flavor was the same, with some vanilla woody notes. Lots of roast, coffee, maple syrup.
3.9 650 ml bottle. Pours a thick black with light head. Big and sticky. Bourbon maple syrup. Great for what it is.
3.4 From a Crowler at the December 2018 RB gathering. It is a dark chocolate color with a tan head. TheAroma is of dark molasses. The taste is strong maple syrup and then hints of chocolate
4.2 From a Crowler at the December 2018 RB gathering. Pours a clear dark cola with a tan head. Aroma of dark molasses. Flavors are sweet chocolate. Delicious.
4.5 Bottle. Black bodied with a tall, dense, frothy brown head. Aroma is sweet with roasted malt, booze, maple syrup, burnt caramel, and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, pancakes covered in syrup and soft booze. Body is medium with a dense creamy carbonation and lots of sugary stickiness. Mild alcohol warmth as well. Ends with more maple syrup, caramel, roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and booze. Nice!
4.4 2018/11/23 - Pours a dark brown cola colour with a frothy, tan head that quickly reduces and leaves minimal lacing. Aroma is fantastic; milk chocolate, fudge, kahlua, wood, light whisky, vanilla, coffee, toffee and lots of maple syrup. Taste is chocolate milk, rich fudge, maple, vanilla, coffee and light whisky. Mouthfeel is medium to full and slick with creamy carbonation and a sweet, warming, rich finish. Complex, rich and deeply satisfying. Amazing stuff.
4.0 Bottle shared by Chalumeaux, thanks for sharing and for opening your home to me! Sweet a little sticky with lots of maple and lightly peppery coffee. Hints of warming alcohol. Light oaky spice. Very tasty beer but pales in comparison to the last buffalo in the park.
4.2 Imperial porter with coffee and maple syrup, aged in bourbon barrels; one of Funky Buddha's flagship beers, glad I finally got a chance to taste this celebrity at Bumb3r's underground tasting event in Antwerp. Thick and moussy, yellowish beige, opening head, black robe with hazy mahogany edges. Strong, beguiling aroma of thick molten milk chocolate, vanilla beans, marzipan, coffee liqueur, kahlua, ruby port, hazelnut paste, cognac, toffee, nougat, maple syrup, treacle. Sweet, candied-sugary onset, dark candied dates and dried figs, soft carbonation, thick and creamy toffeeish, chocolatey malt body, very hazelnutty as well, leading to a long, heating, brandy-ish finish with a peppery hop touch as well as lingering coffee and maple syrup flavours adding further complexity to an already full-bodied, multi-layered beer. Rich, boozy, bittersweet finish, very satisfying. Every bit as good as I was expecting, but again and like many of these American imperial stouts and porters, perhaps just a tad too alcoholic in the finish for me personally.
3.4 2017 vintage. Shared by 10/13/18. Dark ebony. No head. Seems opaque. Vanilla and coffee bean. Light maple. Not all that exciting or aromatic. Acidic maple, bitter roast. Vanilla, sweet fudge, chocolate. Wow whats with all of this acidity?  Kinda thinned-out, lightly syrupy. Heavy pepper some booze. Low, loose carbonation.  Not a trainwreck but the coffee is off/infected I think.
4.2 Bottle at bumba. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and malt. Taste has lots of coffee, chocolate, bourbon and sweet candy finish. Nice.
3.9 22 oz. bottle shared by Chalmeaux. 2017 vintage, thanks TJ!! Aroma is maple syrup, coffee, sticky caramel. Flavor is nearly sticky sweet. Maple is huge, coffee is a tad over extracted. Mouthfeel and texture is good. Barrel aging is nearly hidden over all the adjuncts. Still good.
4.0 Pouted from bottle in trade from solidfunk 2017 vintage black with brown hues and a tan head. Aroma is maple coffee light smokiness. Taste is sweet syrup light spice from barrel and a smoky notes with a finish of extracted coffee. Maybe previous versions were better.

4.3 Dark beer with a foamy beige head. Great maple and chocolate nose. Such a deep, rich beer. Maple, sweetened coffee, warming bourbon, chocolate, brown sugar, and a great alcohol finish. Really sweet but very complex.
4.3 Aroma of chocolate, maple syrup, coffee, light bourbon. Taste is lots of milk chocolate, sweetened dense coffee, hefty amount of maple syrup and a nice bourbon barrel to balance it. This is extremely drinkable.
4.4 0.1 ml taster, courtesy of Sander - many thanks!!! black with rather creamy light brown head. dark chocolate, coffee, tobacco, ash, vanilla, bourbon, maple, smokey, nuts, wood, charred meat, spices; finish: coffee ice cream. full body, medium sweetness, some roasty bitterness, alcohol is really well hidden, although is is a little warming. extremely complex flavours - nice balance - nothing is overpowering. Very tasty!
4.3 650 ml bottle, botled 10/25/16. Shared by Sander, many thanks! Black body, with a small, creamy, coffee colored head. Lovely, complex aroma of coffee, cocoa powder, chocolate brownie, spices, maple, some vanilla. Tastes also delicious, quite similar, with more tiramisu notes. Full, creamy mouthfeel, with a low carbonation. Finishes dry, warm, a bit boozy, a bit roasty, moderate sweet, with cocoa powder, coffee, maple, some vanilla. Delicious! So dense and complex, with a great mix of all the ingredients, very well balanced. A bit on the sweet side, while with enough roasty notes. Another really outstanding, comfortable one by Funky Buddha. Score: 9 / 4 / 9 / 4 / 17
4.1 0,66l bottle at Sanders place, shared by Sander, big thanks. Bottled 25.10.2016. Black color, small coffee coloured head. Smells of maple, earthy, cinnamon, spices, sweetness. Lovely smell. Full body, light carbonation, slick mouthfeel. Tastes of vanilla, light maple, earthy, peppery, bit chocolate, grassy, earthy, some wood. Finishes lightly roasty bitter with notes of vanilla, some maple and earthy notes. For me too heavy on the vanilla, nice maple and wood notes. Balance gets better once it warms up. Very nice still
4.4 660 ml bottle at 13% ABV at Sanders place, bottled 25.10.2016, shared by Sander, many thanks! Pours a very dark mahogany with a tan colored head. The aroma is full of maple in front of bourbon and lots of coffee, licorice, vanilla, toffee and some spices - very nice and balanced smell. Medium-full to full body with hardly any carbonation a medium sweetness, a light to medium bitterness and some booze. The flavor starts with sweet maple syrup, bourbon, nuts and vanilla followed by distinctly roasty notes of coffee along with licorice and lightly burnt notes. Finishes with maple syrup, nuts and a light roasty bitterness. Overall really, really good - full of lovely flavors while the balance between the individual flavors is incredible. Aroma: 9 Appearance: 4 Taste: 9 Palate: 4 Overall: 18
4.2 Intensywny słodki aromat, dużo kawy (espresso) i słodkiego syropu klonowego, w tle czekolada i subtelna wanilia. W smaku słodkie i kremowe, podobnie jak w aromacie dominuje kawa (tutaj jakby bardziej rozwodniona) i syrop klonowy. W tle kakao i nuty pupernikla. Finisz lekko beczkowy (wanilia) z bourbonem w posmaku.
4.2 Sample at the source. Super maple sweetness. Light smokiness. Big bodied and creamy texture.
4.7 Tasted from bottle. Pours black with khaki head. Huge coffee and maple aroma with some bourbon notes. Moderate to heavily sweet. Flavors of maple syrup, coffee, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, and bourbon. Very well done. Incredible beer.
5.0 Dark black with a light brown head. Aroma is maple syrup, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, dark fruit and bourbon. Taste is heavy sweet, heavy bitter and light salt. Palate is full body, oily feel, with soft carbonation.
4.4 Pours black with a beige head, aroma of chocolate, coffee, orange, wood, coconut, flavor of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, cherry, smooth, full bodied, Great
4.1 Bomber courtesy gift of Meadme, taken all the way to Niger for our monthly craft tasting.
4.3 Maple, maple, maple!!! Tons of it on the aroma and flavor. I want a Yankee Candle that smells like this beer.
3.7 Refrigerated brown bomber poured into a glass. Black with small beige head. Aroma is cofffee, medium body, medium carbonation, and pretty good small-bubble lacing. Taste is coffee, maple, and some wood.
