Black, cracked, stuffed in a sack, boiled and cold-infused. We’ve braided the assertive presence of hops with the stimulating character of fresh black pepper. Not so much a kick in the shorts as a hop lover’s wake-up call, our Knot Stock might just become your go-to pale.

3.1Pours a ruddy, particulate filled brown - kind of looks like sewer water - with a puffy light tan head with significant staying power. Aroma is sweet with some spice mixed in - honey, malt, pepper...it works. Flavor is definitely a bit odd - a bit of a roller coaster between sweet malt and bitter hop, with a lot of spice at the end. Ends with a long, bitter finish. Palate seems appropriate for the beer - maybe slightly thin. Interesting drink - just not quite sure what this is supposed to be!
3.1Bottle at yespr.
Hazy orange coloured with a medium sized off-white head.
Sweet and fruity aroma of caramel, bread and hops.
Sweet and fruity flavour of caramel, bread and hops.
Dry hoppy finish.
2.9Bottled. A hazy dark amber beer with a nice light tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and herbs. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and straw, leading to a bitter finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.
2.912 fl oz bottle. Pours cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma is herbal and spiced. Light metallic, toasted caramelish and bitter. Toasted malty and caramelish into a medium dry finish.
3.3Poured from draft at twisted spoke. Clear orange with foamy head. Crazy taste. Cracked pepper for sure. Honey and Carmel flavors too. Malts and hops are medium. Not bad. Weird beer
3.3Pours amber with a bit of lacing head. Lots of pepper and hops on the nose make for a very interesting scent. The taste is spicy and bitter reminiscent of a rye beer. Overall it finishes a bit weak but is a great beer and I would have lots more
2.7Surprisingly good given that it is full of black pepper. Balanced just right so that the pepper acts as the hop, without overpowering the balance.
3.4Beer made with black pepper sounds too interesting not to try. It pours a cloudy medium brown color with a strong scent of malts and black pepper which continues into the taste. It does have a slightly bitter taste. Something new and interesting to try that would go well with a beef meal but not so well by itself.
3.6The pepper starts as just a hint of spice jazzing up a plain pale, but it really accumulates and warms up the sinuses. Not at all subtle but weirdly balanced. A tasty drink for winter if you really love pepper. It would be fantastic with a good cut of meat.
2.6this brew was tasty, but no so much that its going to be my ’go to pale’ as the label states. poured a dark beer. was very smooth. good brew. So black pepper is the ’spice’ I don’t see it.
2.1I think somebody spilled the pepper shaker into my beer. Interesting aroma, nice color, and smooth initial taste, but way too much pepper. Don’t think I even finished it.
1.3I get all pepper pretty much, it overpowers everything else. Did not enjoy this but I applaud the attempt
2.4draft.
hazed bronze.
herbal pumpkin spice / nutmeg / tree bark.
distinct powderiness of spice rub.
starchy, acerbic texture.
medium-full texture.
sour nuts and photo lab chemical finish.
strongly bitter with a sludgy body.
2.0Thanks to GhostFace for this bottle. Cheers, Neal! Pours a hazy amber with an off-white head. Nose is light caramel, maybe some biscuit, and some McCormick pepper shakers. Flavor starts off with some mild malt, but pepper and more pepper really refuse to let any other aspect come through. Medium in body and not my thing.
3.38/10/12. 12oz bottle thanks to cbfobes! Not clear amber pour with a nice khaki head that lasts and laces plenty. Light earthy hop presence in the aroma with some cracked pepper aspect. Plain bready malt flavor with barely a touch of hop and a definite metal twang. Eh.
3.3Spicy citrus with some malt in aroma, complex and different. Hazy amber brown. Spicy pepper sweet rounded hops. Different, fun, but not my fav.
1.5Too much black pepper in the nose and taste. I know that’s what is in it, but it’s just overwhelming for my palate. I didn’t get the hop notes that were advertised at all. I spit a 12 oz bottle with a buddy and could barely finish my portion. Unique...I’ll give it that.
3.3Gold pour with a light fluffy head. Aroma is pretty lacking. Pale hops lead to a straight up black pepper flavor. Unique, prob great with steak.
3.3Bottle. The pour was a cloudy medium brown with some orange highlights and a large (2-3 finger) frothy light tan head that was fully lasting and had excellent sticky sheets of lace.
The aroma was of a mild light bread malt, a light spruce hop and a dusty earthy yeast with notes of caramel and pepper.
The taste was a little mild with a malty caramel taste at first then progressed into this malty bitter peppery flavor with a mild spicy finish. The flavor lasted an average time after the swallow with the spicy pepper taste increasing as time went on.
Mouthfeel was light to medium in body with a nice dry texture and a medium carbonation.
Overall a well rounded brew with just the right amount of spice, which made this brew quite enjoyable...
3.2Pours a somewhat cloudy copper with a thin, soapy white head. Aroma is mostly black pepper, some caramel malt, citrus hops, light floral and earthy notes. Flavor is again mostly black pepper, some earth spiciness, slightly sweet caramel malt, some earthy and citrus hops. Palate is light bodied with a neutral entry, off dry finish and light to medium carbonation. Not bad, really crazy amount of pepper in this one.
2.7Cloudy yellow-orange with very little head. Black pepper is way evident in the nose. A touch of sweetness tries to sneak in, but black pepper is pretty much all that’s going on. Surprised I didn’t sneeze. Lively carbonation, medium body. Taste is mostly mediocre pale ale with slightly spicy clean black pepper finish.
4.3Perfect balance between pepper an d pilsner. Fucking good you long winded assholes.
3.5An amber ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, an interesting green peppercorn, with fruity esters, nice and smooth. In mouth, nice smooth saison-like offering, with nice pepper notes, malty and smooth, a bit of orange pulp. On tap at the Istmus Beer and Cheese, Jan 21 2012.
3.3Maybe I got a bad bottle, but I’m not tasting the pepper that everyone says is so overpowering. This tastes like a run-of-the-mill pilsner as much as anything. Nothing special, really.
2.8Pours an amber color with 1/4 in frothy white head. Aroma consists of pine and black pepper. Medium to light bodied. Taste is overwhelmingly black pepper with a bit of toffee and caramel trying to seep through. Black pepper overshadows everything else however and comes off as too much. At the back end, the pepper becomes even more pronounced and lingers. I actually find it difficult to finish an entire bottle of this.
2.8I agree with others, the pepper taste overwhelms this brew. Medium body, dry finish, not as complex as one might except from this style of beer. Overall, decent, not one of my favorite styles.
3.3Tap at Sugar Mom’s in Philly Olde City. Little hipster bar hidden in a dark alley. Clear amber with a lasting, off-white head. Muted, herbal nose. Taste is herbal, clean, basil, oregano, mild but welcome cracked black peppercorn. Citrus spice to balance. Not bad at all.
3.3Very spicy beer, with an overwhelming taste of pepper. Clear red amber color, with short head. Palate was smooth, but couldn’t get over pepper, too overpowering.
3.6Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.
Appearance: Somewhat dark amber with thick off-white head and very nice lacing.
Aroma: Cracked black pepper, caramel, cherry, and light citrus.
Taste: The black pepper overwhelms the caramel malt base. Ends with strong pine, some citrus and the pepper still carries through.
Palate: Moderate carbonation, medium body, dry finish.
Overall: Very unique, but the black pepper is simply too much. Points for innovation.
3.2This was a little confusing to get served as an APA without any more clarification. An amber-orange color with a beige head. The aroma is some caramel, but dominated by a woodiness, it almost seemed like cedar to me, but now I know it is the black pepper. The taste is much the same, a pretty standard malt base covered up entirely by black pepper. Not bad, but not my thing.
