Imperial Stout brewed in collaboration with De Molen

OG:
1100

Hops:
Challenger, Magnum, Polaris, Sorachi Ace, Calypso

Malt:
Pale Malt, Brown Malt, Crystal Malt, Torrefied Wheat, Chocolate Malt, Roast Barley.

A jet black imperial stout with a dark caramel coloured head. The aroma is of prunes and dark fruticake with a smooth treacle like taste and a lasting warm bitter finish.

Back in November our friends at De Molen in The Netherlands made the journey over to Scotland to brew our strongest beer to date. De Molen are renowned for brewing big world beating stouts, and we felt that it was fitting that we brew one together on our new kit. This beer was all about seeing how far we could push our new kit on ABV and IBUs. The result is a 9.5% Imperial Stout that is a modern take on a classic style: bold new world hops such as Sorachi Ace and Calypso add a unique dimension to the rich meaty body of the beer. We are also doing a wee barrel ageing experiment with this one and have left some to age in a Grappa barrel with some brettanomyces for a few months. Watch this space…..

3.9 Keg at St Andrews Brew Co Potterrow, Edinburgh. A black colour with a medium tan head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, liquorice, some cream, leather, prunes and subtle molasses. Taste of chocolate, caramel, molasses, some liquorice, prunes, slight leather, cream, coffee, a little alcohol and subtle spice. Medium to full bodied and soft carbonation. A soft but lingering, spicy molasses finish. A smooth and creamy impy stout, rich chocolatey, caramel and molasses flavours with the added complexity of dried prunes, liquorice and leathery tones. Deep, dark and flavourful.
Ça me plaît !
4.1 Heerlijk impy. Smaakt droppig, zoet, sterk en goed gebalanceerd. Doet me goed...
4.3 Mooie Imp Stout! Roasty bitter, voldoende bitter van de hop, roasty koffie, donkere chocolade en lang in de nasmaak. Steady Stout!
4.0 Black, light tan creamy head. Rich malt and chocolate aroma, caramel, cocoa. Sweet flavour, malt, roast, caramel, hoppy bitterness. Licorice and coffee. Quite drinkable. Good.
4.2 330ml bottle approx. one year old. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate, dark fruits. Taste of chocolate, dark fruits, liquorice, roast, molasses, sweet and rich, a little warming alcohol. Full bodied, fine carbonation. Excellent imperial stout.

4.3 zwart met volle fijne kaki kraag. aroma van chocolade, drop, zoethout, chocolade, geroosterd. smaken zijn zacht, romig, vanille, glad, redelijk zoet, alcohol, chocolade, geroosterd, droppig, lactose, melkchocolade, volle body, lange afdronk, prima
4.4 Butelka 0,33l. Aromat kawowy, czekoladowy, delikatny alkohol. W smaku głównie kawa, trochę czekolady. Długi kawowy posmak.
3.3 Alas somewhat disappointing. Poured a very nice black with moderate head, which is the best thing about this. Vague, albeit fresh nose. Not much to it. Palate is average, nothing substantial but not watery or anything. Fresh pine and overly hoppy taste. Not my cup of tea, but palatable.
3.8 Pours dark brown with a coffee-coloured dissipating frothy head. Nose is rather sparse. Dark chocolate, olives and coffee. Nice for what's there. Palate is moderate, but slightly watery. Taste is light on all fronts. Candy floss, hops, brown sugar, milky coffee and roasted flavours. It's got some nice flavours, but what there is there's just not much of unfortunately.
3.9 Bottle from K&L in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is coffee, dark fruits, black olives. Taste is not quite dark chocolate or coffee but in that zone, lots of hoppy resin and spiciness. Reminded me a bit of Old Rasputin but a bit more sharp / spicy.
2.9 1/2 pint in monty's, Edinburgh. Thick black colour. Quite a strong beer, but doesn't taste quite as potent as I expected. Slightly spicy taste. Quite thick on the palate. (K)
4.1 Bottle from Weekender in Edinburgh. Pours perfection. Deep jet black with a tight, creamy tan head on top. Straight up on the nose is smoky dark malt with chocolate. Initially it's all smooth but then dried prunes pop up along with a surprisingly sharp hop resin. Milky coffee smoothes things again. It's a big Imperial so there's a boozy tail that reminds me of vodka. Dark chocolate and black treacle on the flavours with Irish coffee. Silky black full body with a mild prickle of carbonation. This is a deliciously rich chocolate stout and I loved it.
4.2 Dark brown liquid, average head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate. Medium body, hardly any carbonation. Taste of coffee, chocolate.
4.0 Bottle. Pours opaque black, large creamy dark brown head, dissipates slowly, nice lacing. Aroma is light, molasses, leather, dark, chocolate. Flavor is light sweet, fully bitter, rich, cocoa, molasses, burnt wood. Full body, creamy mouthfeel.
3.9 Bottle.. pours black , medium small, tanned head with low avg stability. Smell is nice, full, roasty, medium intense . Taste is bit bitter, full bodied, sharp, meaty, very roasty back. Bitter, full flavored. Nice beer ! Lovely aftertaste of rich chocolate
4.3 Tasted this at the 31st Paisley Beer Festival on the 26th April 2018. Cask, handpump dispense. Dull black in colour with a thick tan head. Rich and smooth malty aroma with sweet notes of moist fudge brownie wafting off. Silky smooth mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malt complex delivers a rich fudge brownie base with strong notes of dark Colombian chocolate, treacle fudge, raisins, syrupy dates and molasses. There is a strong hop element to the bitter aftertaste which imparts an earthy tea like flavour which combines well with the heavy malt. Finish is so smooth, sweet and rich with complex malt elements to the fore, treacle toffee, fudge brownie, liquorice and dark stone fruit flavours evident in the mouth. Cannot detect any coffee notes in this at all as is standard in most Imperial Stouts - just treacle and fudge brownie!! Despite the high ABV - so dangerously drinkable. Thought this was easily beer of the festival for me and the flavours reminded me of JW Lees Manchester Star in many aspects? Just loved it - highly recommended.
3.5 Best before end of January 2020 on the bottle's label. Pours pitch black, small head of tan foam, some lacing. Smells strong, loaded with roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, anise is there but mild. Dark fruit rounds it out. Roasted malt and dark fruit dominate the taste. Coffee sneaks up on me and becomes a major player. Bits of toffee and a mild sweetness that I possibly attribute to milk chocolate? Not sure on that. Mouthfeel sure feels.. full. Kinda creamy, alcohol isn't hidden well; in the taste and after the swallow. All in all, it's a very good sipper.
4.3 330 ml bottle from Bumble Inn, Peterborough, bb 01/2019. Black, thick tan head. Nose - roasted malt, chocolate, prunes, treacle, some alcohol. Taste - bittersweet, chocolate, dark fruits. Smooth, oily.
3.8 Bottle 330ml at home. BBE FEB 2018. Pours pitch black with beige head. Roasted malts, caramel, chocolate, licorice. Full body, slick texture, average carbonation.
3.8 Draft at Uiltje Bar. Dark brown color small brown head. Dark roast coffee aroma. Taste is sweet cafe au lait. Nice.
4.0 33cl Bottle @ 3er Tiempo Tienda de Cervezas, Santander, Spain. Black colour with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, sweet, coffee. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, coffee, licorice, nuts. Full body, soft carbonation.
3.9 Aroma - roast, chocolate, caramel, barley, dark fruit, and a dose of alcohol. Appearance - the body is black. Head is 1", khaki, and slowly fades. Some drape lacing. Taste - is rich. Has a blend of rich roast, dark chocolate, barley, and some dark fruit. Palate - body is medium, average, carbonation is under average, finish is slightly astringent.
4.2 Mills and Hills has a pitch black colour with a small espresso like head. Aroma: caramel, bastogne cookies and, coffee and dark roasted malts. Taste: roasted malts, molasses, some smoke and some red fruit. Ends quite bitter. Mouthfeel is heavy with low carbonation. Great brew.
4.0 butelka. czarne jak noc, brudnobiała piana pozostająca do końca picia w postaci niewielkiego krążka. lekko wędzone, mineralne, czekoladowe, iglaki, kokos, kakao, mega kompleksowy aromat. w smaku mineralne, czekoladowe, palone, słodkie, na finiszu lekko kwaśne. ciekawe
4.1 33 cl. bb Jan 2020. Jet black pour with a creamy disc of foam. Aroma of cocoa, espresso, black strap molasses, raisin and maybe a whiff of smoky sea breeze. Tastes of salty caramel, smoky espresso, cocoa, blackberry and black strap molasses. Medium-plus body has smooth low-medium carbonation and an easy drinking balance.
4.0 12oz bottle pours a viscous black with plenty of creamy brown head. Nose has raisins and molasses, booze, malt, licorice, a little jammy. Flavor is quite meaty, black pudding and wild boar sausage, big with sweet black licorice and molasses, chocolate covered raisins. Full bodied and a touch sweet. Everything you want in an imperial stout.
