Girardin Oude Lambik

Girardin Oude Lambik

The original brewed Lambic. Letting this beer age for 1, 2 or 3 years and mixing those for fresh Lambic makes a Gueuze. A Gueuze is also bottle conditioned which gives it carbonation. The Lambic however is complete flat without bubbles. Available only in draught form.

Please note the age of the sample you are reviewing when entering your rating. While many factors determine whether you have had "Jonge" or "Oude" Lambik, a general rule of thumb is to enter 1 year-old or older lambik under "Girardin Oude Lambik" and anything less than 6 months-old under "Girardin Jonge Lambik".

For those between 6 and 12 months of age, you should take in to consideration the character of the lambik. Samples presenting themselves as hazy/cloudy, with some head-formation and residual sugar should be entered as "Jonge Lambik", while those that are drier, higher in clarity and with little/no head formation should be entered as "Oude Lambik".

4.0 Probably from a box. Grote Dorst. Colour of well mashed tea. No head. Nose has muscovado sugar. Chestnut honey. Sour apple. Some sweaty leather. Taste is sweet, initially, with an intense, leafy, leathery bitterness. Medium body. Fairly oily. Fine carbonation. Lingering leathery bitterness to finish. Tasty gear.
4.0 Gravity bag at Luppolo Station in Rome. Golden/orange opalescent and bright color with a bubbles lacing. Nose: fruity and dollar, red fruits aroma (cherries). Mouth is terrific, rustic fruitiness, hay, overall is very consistent and refreshing with a mild peppery tartness finish.
3.3 06Aug2019 Light citrus fruits, orange and lemon peel. Clear gold, small, frothy, off-white head. Light sour. More sour citrus fruits, lemon peel, soft carbonation, medium bodied. Boring. Draft at GBBF19.
2.9 Chardonnay and apple, vanilla, pleasant enough, not massively keen but it’s an odd style. Light straw pour, some head, honey sweet.
3.7 Keg at Beerselse Kasteelfeesten 2019-06-28 Beersel AR: mixed of dried fruits AP: amber clear, no head F: sour, semisweet, wee gooseberries
3.1 Bag-in-box at Arrogant Sour Festival, Reggio Emilia, 2 years. Clear dark golden color with no head. Aroma of honey, glue, sweet pear, sweet white wine and some wood. Medium body with no carbonation, a very light sweetness, a light sourness and a light to medium tartness. The flavor is woody and less sweet than the smell suggested with some pears, apples, berry pits, wood. While the flavor is OK I do not like the smell. Aroma: 7 Appearance: 3 Taste: 6 Mouthfeel: 3 Overall: 12
3.7 Bag-in-Box at Arrogant Sour 2019, 24 months old. Amber-brown, clear body, with a small, frothy, yellowish head. Aroma of overripe fruits, leather, wood, ripe apple. Tastes similar, with some more nutty notes. Medium, slick mouthfeel, with a flat carbonation. Finishes medium dry, moderate sour, a bit sweet, leathery, wooden, with apples, overripe fruits, some nutty notes. Very nice. Really rustic stuff, with a lot of old, ripe character. Quite complex, while still really quaffable. Another very characterful one by Girardin. Score: 7 / 4 / 7 / 4 / 15

3.1 Sampling tray at de Grote Dorst, from a bladder box?, 09/12/18. Clear golden with a limited off white cap. Nose is soured fruits, lemon, straw, little complexity offered. 3.9 Sample at De Grote Dorst. Pours golden yellow colour. No head. Bitterness( woody notes), apples, lots of wood in the aroma. Pleasently bitter, woody beginning with apples. Lots of juicy apples in the middle. Bitter, dry finish. Very well balanced and tasty lambic. Really good.
3.6 Helder blond bier met een ringetje wit schuim. Geur: licht zurig, Brett. Smaak: licht zurig, wat Brett, tannine, wat noterig, okkernoot, zelfs het velletje van een okkernoot. Matige koolzuurprikkel. Afdronk: droog, zacht zuur.
3.5 From notes. Most likely at de Geuze & Kriek dagen @ In De Wildeman. From keg (!). Amber color. Almost no head. Aroma's: fruity, sourish, a bit funky. Flavor is moderate sour, moderate bitter. Light bodied. Reasonable carbonation, which is actually weird for a lambic. Slightly bitter finish. I've had this several times before around Brussels, from plastic container or bag in box, which was much better. I'll rerate that at some point.

3.7 15 July 2018. At 'In de Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst', Eizeringen. Solo tasting. Age: about 2 years. Pours clear orange with a thinning, frothy & bubbly, off-white head. 'Dankish' aroma of apple, oak, sherry, hay, grass, peach, leather, cheese. LIght to medium funky sour onset, leathery & yeasty, building up a light 'woody' bitterness with hints of grass & hay; sweet, fruity back, notes of apple & honey. Bit tart, grassy hoppy finish, lingering apple & hay, but the dry, woody bitterness has the last word. Light to medium body, oily texture, flat carbonation. Not my favourite Lambic, but quite agreeable in its woodiness. An acquired taste for sure.
3.7 Taster during the Bokkereyder workshop. Pours a clear amber, no head. Tastes fruity, (green) apple, grass, herbal and a mild funk. Bit of hay, light citrus notes, dough. Gentle and pleasant.

3.2 On tap at Lambiczoon, Milan, Italy. It pours golden, no head. Aroma is earth, farm, lemon tart, notes of vinegar. Taste is medium sour. Body is light, carbonation is flat to fine. Overall not appreciated too much.
3.8 Bought a bag-in-box at the brewery. When poured it as a gold-copper color, with no carbonation at all. Aroma is woody (oak), apple, barnyard and funk. Taste is tart apple, caramel, malt and funk.
3.6 From what I assume to be a bag in a box at La Fleur en Papier Dore, They were out of Oud Beersel Oude Lambik & had replaced it temporarily with Girardin Lambik, I had assumed it was the Jonge Lambik... looking at the note in the description here "drier, higher in clarity and with little/no head formation" nails this beer & makes me think it belongs on this entry. Belgian Admins change if needed. Pours perfectly still with a deep golden color. The aroma is hay & mild funk with a bit of clean malt character and a touch of lactic yougurty stuff. The flavor is dry and has a distinct maltiness to it, almost toasty really. There is a lot of wood character to it and a touch of bitterness. It's mildly tart in a very lactic way. Far cleaner and very unique from what I am accustomed to in a lambic.
3.2 Golden colour with thin soapy head. Aroma is dry and sharp with some grape like sweet sourness. Some farmy funk too. Flavour is milder. A bit light bodied. Low carbonation.
4.3 Bottle at Mikkeller in Aarhus. Very earthy but smooth. Carbonation is strong but not a overwhelming.
3.9 Keg @Grote Dorst, Eizeringen. 15-08-2017. Milder than the ones we had before this one in our Grote Dorst session. Smooth and enjoyable, of course sour, but more balanced than in other examples, Easy and good.
3.4 From tap at BeerTemple, Amsterdam. Aroma is grainy with straw, soft fruits, green apples, wood, musty and earthy notes. Lightly funky. Mildly sour with an unexpected dry bitter flavour. Decent, not what I expected, not bad as a beer but not anywhere near what I want from my Lambic.
3.6 Draft at beertemple. Aroma of tart horseblanket, old grain and oak. Taste has dry tart, horseblanket, oak, brett, grassy herbs and a watery finish. Solid, not the best.
